  • MURRAY:Wasted match points three tournaments in a row (2012 Tokyo, 2012 Shanghai, 2012 Paris)

Some really interesting cases as this one, all 3 matches in a row where Andy wasted MP came after he won first GS trophy. Shows how difficult it is to deal with success without previous experience .Then now is more clear why many fedfans hate Berdych so passionately.LOL

Wow...never realized Federer lost so many.

I will never forget those Murray/Robredo matches in Shenzhen and Valencia.

Shenzhen: Robredo was up 7-5, 6-6 (6-2) and I went to cook breakfast. When I came back Murray was ahead 5-1 in the 3rd set. I was stunned.

Valencia: One of the best 3 set matches Ive seen. reminded me a lot of Djokovic/Nadal from Madrid. Robredo blew match points in the 2nd set, but didnt tank the 3rd set like Shenzhen. The MP rally that Murray won on was one of the better match points Ive ever seen.

Fed blows one for the ages against Donskoy

5–2 lead in the 2nd set TB, then 5–1 lead in the 3rd set TB blown on top of the 3 MPs

Not to mention serving for the match in the 3rd up a break; lost serve twice, but wrangled his way into TB dropping it finally to this kid! WOW! :p ;)

I knew Rogi would be at the top of list for most losses when having match points among the big 4. That and not converting break points are the 2 biggest stats that make him lose more often than not.

Djokovic is not just a great front runner. He also hardly ever fails when the finish line is so close.

Federer probably holds the record for both MP saving and squandering. Not surprising because of such a long career while he hardly ever loses convincingly.

Djokovic and Nadal are unreal front-runners. The only 2 guys I feel utterly hopeless/helpless against when they have even the slimmest of leads.

That's what made Australian Open final even more shocking to me.

Agree with this 100% Both of those matches were outstanding tennis. There was so many highlight points and the Valencia match was probably one of the top matches all year, probably ignored due to the opponent but i remember it being so good!

Hold on.. does this mean that Fed has had match points in almost 10% of ALL matches he's lost, across his career?

That's kinda crazy. :D

Find it hard to interpret these stats, though it is pretty curious that Federer has wasted MP in more matches more than he saved.

Shows how hard he is to beat.
Does it? He has the lowest matches% won of the Big 3. Career %points won might be interesting by surface cause I think he might have a higher% of points won but lower% of matches won compared to Djokovic.

In any case, Murray and especially Djokovic are quite something else in this stat. For Murray probably due to having a few huge "scores" against lesser players, while Djokovic, when he's on, has been ridiculously clutch in MP situations.

Depends on how you value it. Fed is the hardest ATG to beat in straight sets and his MP mugging is a part of it.
I think generally Federer just wins because he wins way more points than the opponent, and when the points go 50/50 that Federer actually gets tight and is more likely to choke than Djokovic and Nadal.

Awesome match that one, I remember it fairly well. I'm sure Robredo does too:

Yeah, he's also the leader of losing matching while winning the majority of the points.
RAFA started choking in different situations, though like having a losing record in 5 setters since 2010 while Fed has a winning one.

Yeah, people often just talk about choking like it's this one thing, though basically every player can have different choking patterns.

First time after having championship points.

In past eras, the top players really couldn't care less about the event; mostly used to get in some extra practice time before Wimbledon! IIRC, Borg never actually played at Queens which was the only event btwn him winning the FO 6 times and the Wimbledon titles he hogged for 5+ years! It wasn't uncommon for Connors to drop his 1st or 2nd match, not wanting to get involved in some grass court war and get injured! That was damn likely with most of the top players with how choppy and slippery the surface was before being homogenized the last decade or so! I'm thrilled Nole actually did this well; I'll take it! :p ;)
