Match points saved and squandered by the Big Four

The technique of his backhand is not very good to say.
:censored:

It held up well for the most part! He made Murray work even though his BH was being relentlessly attacked! I was impressed and surprised Matteo didn't finish off Sir Andy!

All his rivals know that sooner rather than later the Italian's backhand will end up giving up.
:(

Yeah, that was a massive fail on MP but Berry is just like the majority of the tour (and amateurs too!) that have stronger forehands than backhands. I think he might be better suited to go exclusively ohbh than to try “switch hitting” from one to two hands, particularly when rushed like that MP. He had several points he earned with solid slicing and lobbing so he can definitely lose that left hand, kinda like Wilander adapting mid-career to hitting a lot of ohbhs.

Paire is about the only pro I can say I’ve often seen run around his FH to hit a BH, the antithesis of a lot of plus-one players like Matteo. Before Berry got so prominent it was Sock that always got major flak for his non-existent BH. He just rarely got the chance to show off his fail vs the Big Four.

Andy saves 3 more against Sonego in Doha, all on his serve at 5-4* in the third, at *15-40 and *40-AD

The one at 15-40 Sonego had a chance but missed an inside out FH. Two unreturned serves on the other ones though

Djokovic was going to make this list either way today

He saved a match point at 6-5* in the second set tiebreaker, only to waste four more in the third set (two on the Alcaraz serve at 5-3* and two more on his serve at *5-4)

Eventually pulls through with a 5–7, 7–6(7), 7–6(4) win

Murray wastes three match points against de Minaur in Beijing, two on de Minaur's serve at 5-2 in the third, and one on his own serve at 6-5 in the tiebreaker

He also wastes his best chance at scoring a win against de Minaur. Now 0-5 in his career against the Aussie (one of those losses is a Laver Cup match)

The best thing of this thread for me, is that the Federer's count of matches he lost after squandering match points has already been closed in 24.

De Minaur now joins a select circle consisting only of himself and a certain Federer, Nadal and Djokovic in being the only players to score 5 successive victories against Murray.

Lucky me, I woke up just in time to see this match! Why does Murray bother? He just doesn't & won't ever "have it" again! :giggle: :sneaky: :-D :happydevil:

Still trying that stupid defensive game thinking he can just out-physical an opponent! It's like he doesn't know how old he is! What a goof! :giggle::sneaky::happydevil:

Kinda crazy that Federer only has 5 seasons of play (not including 2020 where he only played one event) which don’t feature a blown MP since the turn of the millennium (out of 21 total).

Murray blows another MP against de Minaur.

Up 5-2 in the third, Murray loses 5 games in a row and blows a MP up 40-30 on his serve

Kind of hard to believe that's what he's like these days, isn't it?

It's certainly a 2-way street scenario where he definitely seems like he loses more matches mentally than physically. Is that better or worse??? Can't be better as a fan.

Physical issues would be more understandable than mental ones. Why on earth can't he close out matches against De Minaur???

Djokovic blows 3 in a row on Sinner's serve, from 2-6 6-2 5-4* *0-40

First match lost from MP up since 2018 Queen's F, and first one with multiple MP since 2009 Madrid SF

Zzz, it's the freaking Piqué Cup guys. Nobody cares about this competition anymore since 2019. I only watched a few minutes to see how Nole was playing but I wouldn't have bothered otherwise. 99% of the tennis fans wouldn't even be able to tell us who won the trophy last year or in 2021, that's how meaningless it's become.. It lost all its value with this new format. It's always sad to lose a match after missing MP but better this than the Adelaïde or Cincinnati finals, huh,... both won after saving MP. Hopefully he learns the lesson and skips this worthless competition next year. Enjoying a Slam or WTF trophy with his family should be more important than this...

I hope not. If he wins RG then Carlito is a big flop. It's his time now, already beaten by Nole last year now he should not allow others to dominate him on clay.
If i don’t think 36 year old Novak will ever win RG again, I can’t see dinasoar Nadal doing it again

Three more wasted by Nadal against Thompson in the second set (all on return):

*4-5 *30-40; then two more at *4-6, and 5-6 in the TB

Had to do some reformatting but managed to fit all four in the original post (TTW has a 10,000 character limit)

If these guys keep adding to the list I'm going to have put Murray's numbers in another post :(

in the opening post it says Djokovic is 3-0 in GS when having or facing match points but it should be 5-0 (3x won vs Federer, 1x Tsonga, 1x Garcia-Lopez). Please fix, thx. And great work compiling/researching.

NOTE 1: Sources affiliated with Simon Graf claim Federer had a match point against Nicolas Escude in their 2002 Rotterdam QF. This is impossible based on other independent sources. See explanation here
NOTE 2: There is conflicting information on the number of match points in Djokovic v. Garcia Lopez. See this post here
