Match Report
One of the cleanest exhibitions of volleying you're likely to see. Edberg barely puts a hand (or knee) wrong throughout this one-sided match

Edberg serve-volleys constantly (staying back on just one service point) and draws an unusually high number of return errors (for him against Becker anyway) at 36%. Does Edberg serve particularly well? Does Becker return particularly badly?

I've taken stats for a whole host of Edberg-Becker matches (mostly on carpet)…. and this hard court is relatively high bouncing. Edberg, as always, isn't painting lines with his serve. I think Becker had a below-his-norm returning day... but given he's a hot-and-cold player and how well he frequently returns, that's not abnormal.

A number of returns Becker makes are on the high side, over the net when Edberg makes his volley. These aren't 'put-away' volleys by any means, but the grace of Edberg makes them look it.

Edberg has to hit the odd low volley too. He barely misses these at all... and gets them in nice and deep anyway

On the flip side, Edberg has an exceptionally good day on the return. Becker isn't in his looking-to-bang-down-aces-mode of serving (another indication that the court isn't the fastest, though I've seen Becker occasionally forego this approach even on the fastest of courts). Nonetheless, Edberg returns superbly - hitting the ball forcefully and getting a large number of them back (82% return rate is very high against anyone, but especially someone like Becker)

Edberg's passing is on par with his volleying.... he puts many a ball passed the German, of both sides. The lobs in particular are excellent - and well disguised.

Edberg holds easily for most of the match, while Boris is forced to struggle for most of his service games. The Swede serving half as many points as his opponent indicates as much

Summing up - supremo stuff from Edberg - serving, returning, passing and volleying all off the top drawer. Becker doesn't play as well as he's capable, but plays well enough to not be thrashed like this. It doesn't get more elegant than Stefan Edberg having one of his perfect days.... and this is certainly one of them, and against a top class opponent

Rookie
Brilliant match by Edberg. Becker had the first "crisis" in his career. he recently had dropped longtime coach Bosch and was experimenting with a more baseline oriented game (made his first rg semi in 87). and Becker was on a tough road coming from hsi shock loss to Doohan at Wimbledon and was struggling physically after dc (two five setteres vs mac/mayotte), washington and toronto sf (losses to Gilbert/Edberg). not sure, if it was the only time when Edberg could beat Becker back-to-back. a refreshed Becker under the tutelage of Bob Brett was going to beat Edberg in Dallas, Queens and DC-final in Göteborg) the following year.

Edberg's lob is one of the best of all time, IMHO. (and an under-rated part of his game!)

I'll never forget the one to get the decisive break, Wimbledon final, 1990 - and how completely taken by surprise Becker was by it

The ones he hits in this match are top drawer. He hits two winners - one of each wing - on back to back points

I haven't noticed him go for too many lobs in matches against Becker though. Its usually Becker who throws up the lobs... Edberg's consistency in putting away awkward overheads to these are impressive

...Great match to see if you are an Edberg fan...

Not too shabby if you are not, either:)

Edberg's consistency in putting away awkward overheads to these are impressive

In his Courier 1991 USO match (one of Edberg's best ever?) Edberg hit a couple of very athletic overheads on what appeared to be topspin lob winners by Courier...

I think Edberg's ability to get back on overheads allowed him to close in on net a little more than many other players (let's say Lendl), which gave him better angles on his volleys...
