Match Stats/Report - Lendl vs McEnroe, US Open final, 1985

It was not fractured. I thought it was an ankle. Definite limping, though. It was hot that day, but that was not uncommon at the Open. When I think of hot there I remember the 83 men's final being brutally hot. Lendl was out on his feet, but Connors, those feet kept moving.

From CBS TV? I watched parts of that match in maybe the last year or two. Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but I thought they mentioned the ankle. And I did only watch parts. Maybe they said it in the parts I missed. The ankle is what I remember.

When I think of Connors and a fracture, I think of Wimbledon 1977. His right thumb.

I figured that script meant something, but I didn't know what. Not up on all my internet jargon and emoticons. I was also watching it live. As a Connors fan, not happy that night.

and lendl had an easy time with connors.. i remember the commentators saying that he was playing with a fractured foot in that semi but didnt want anyone to know
As I recall, he twisted is ankle during practice, had it taped up during the match. He was definitely hobbled. I don't recall anyone mentioning a fracture, but anything is possible.

'83 was bloody hot as well. Lendl looked like a dishrag...Connors found a second gear, somehow. Not a pretty match, but a gutsy one from Connors, as he played strong down the stretch while Ivan wilted. Literally.

It was disappointing...there was some expectation of a battle happening between them. Not sure about that, but it was clear he had no chance w/that injury, though he did play a close 3rd set.

regarding Connors' injury in the '85 match -

Commentary specifically said "sprained ankle" at least once, but were usually vague.... 'is carrying an injury' type comments being normal

a player who'd been present when Connors got hurt said he turned his ankle but there was no chance that he would default, adding something like Jimmy's a tough guy and that Jimmy had been annoyed that word of the injury had got out in the first place

regarding the 'charge net more' and 'approach down the middle' advice Mac was given by Don Budge and that he used to turn the rivalry around about early '83 - he certainly started approaching more and more early in rallies. The Philly match that year was the turnaround. chip-charged all but 1 second serve return! - 46 return-approaches, 9 errors trying

Won 29/46, and kept Lendl down to 44% second serve points won

He came to net behind every Lendl 2nd serve but 1? That does deserve an exclamation point. Wow. That's hard to so. You figure the other player is going to hit at least some deep 2nd serves which would make it difficult. Amazing stat.
