It was a good performance from Djokovic, but Nadal was just too much. Nadal at RG has the highest peak in the history of tennis, so Djokovic losing against a well-playing Nadal at RG is unsurprising. Djokovic was likely beating any other player not named Nadal.
The opening game is the not the whole match, so Djokovic failing in the strategy with 3 drop shots in the beginning game does not represent an analysis of the whole game. Especially when Nadal was breaking Djokovic's serve regardless of his strategy. Nadal broke Djokovic's serve even when he didn't attempt any drop shot, proving it was not a problem of strategy. Nadal was just too good.
Djokovic commited a high number of unforced errors because Nadal forced him too. Let us remember that at RG 2020 new ultra-heavy balls were used. With the aforementioned ultra-heavy balls the playing conditions were extra-slow. Henceforth, Nadal could reach almost all defensive balls. It forced Djokovic, who was playing very aggresively, to always attempt an extra-shot till he failed due to Nadal's impenetrable defense. Due to the ultra-heavy balls and heavily slow playing conditions, Nadal's defense was impassable.

RG can play faster or more lively at times when it is hotter. 2015 was a good example as well.

Its why i do not see Djokovic beating Nadal at a Major outside ultra fast Australia. Djokovic does not have the power to hit through Nadal which in his physical state nowadays he would need to do. Nadal will outgrind him on slower surfaces.
Nadal is vulnerable to guys with awesome raw power if they can cut errors out.

I don't think it was desperation. If you watch any of his 2020 matches, he was spamming drop shots left and right. It had just become a mindless go-to tactic for him that for some reason he'd gotten away with in the months previous. If anything it came across more like arrogance than desperation, thinking that would also work against Nadal like it did everyone else. He throttled back on them hard after Nadal immediately exposed him in game 1.
Reminded me a bit of the SABR Fed was successfully doing all summer in 2015. He does a couple in the final against Novak, gets immediately exposed and that was basically the end of it. Gimmicks don't work against a player of that caliber in a major final.

Djoe had about 50-50 success on droppers overall (same as SABRerer in fact), wouldn't be a problem if the rest of his game wasn't messy. If anything, he lost the first game on two mug smashes in back-to-back points from deuce, where instead of putting the ball away he hit it back to Nadal, who retook control of the point and squeezed an error. Djokosmash is a meme but we know Joe isn't that bad actually, just misses them a bit more often, and those weren't even misses. Such stuff in the first game certainly indicates he was shook from the outset.
