FRENCH tennis player Mathieu Montcourt died last night at the age of 24.
Montcourt, who was ranked 119th in the world, was found by his girlfriend at his Paris home - although the cause of death is yet unknown.

French Tennis Federation spokesman Christophe Proust said: "We are all devastated.

"We have only heard that he was found dead in his stairwell last night. None of us can believe this has happened."

Montcourt reached the second round of this year's French Open, where he lost to Czech Republic star Radek Stepanek.

In May, Montcourt was handed a five-week ban and fined £7,000 for betting on other tennis matches. That ban came into effect yesterday.

French tennis player Mathieu Montcourt dies at the age of 24

PARIS (AP) — French tennis player Mathieu Montcourt has died. He was 24.

The French tennis federation said on Tuesday that Montcourt had died overnight but that "the causes of his death are not yet known."

"It is with great sadness that the French tennis federation has learned of the sudden death of Mathieu Montcourt," the French tennis federation said. "Mathieu was an enthusiastic young man, passionate, very endearing, and extremely appreciated for his kindness and politeness."

French media earlier reported that Montcourt, ranked 119, was found dead by his girlfriend in the stairwell of his Paris apartment.

In May, Montcourt was handed a five-week ban and fined $12,000 for betting on other matches. That ban took effect Monday.

Montcourt complained during the French Open that the punishment was too harsh, saying that he never bet more than $3 at any time, and never on his own matches — a fact confirmed by the ATP which oversees the men's Tour.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport said Montcourt had wagered a total of $192 on 36 tennis events in 2005. It reduced his suspension on appeal from eight weeks to five.

The issue of betting in tennis drew increased attention from the sport's governing bodies after an online bookmaker voided all wagers on a 2007 match involving Nikolay Davydenko. About $7 million was bet — 10 times the usual amount for a similar-level match — and most of the money backed Davydenko's lower-ranked opponent.

Davydenko was cleared in September after a yearlong investigation

It is very sad news. He was in the top 120 so he was working hard at his craft. He is way too young to have passed on.

RIP

Stunning. I knew he was serving a short ban for the gambling thing... I saw him play a few years ago at the Sacramento Challenger, I still thought he had Top 100 potential.

Mon ami MATHIEU MONTCOURT

Manacor, Spain - July 7th 2009

This morning I woke up with one of the worst news anyone can receive. I heard about the death of our friend Mathieu Montcourt. I am still under shock for this. I can't believe it.

I knew Mathieu since we were kids. We competed together at all the events at an international level there is since you are a kid: Les Petit As, Copa Borotta, etc. and of course afterwards once becoming professionals,.

When someone like this disappears, when something like this happens, you really know where we are and the relativeness of winning or losing a tennis match, of not competing at an event or anything else. This is the loss of a guy who was only 24 and that was sports person. He won't be playing with us again.

I would like to send my most deep and sincere condolences to his family, to his friends and to the French fans.

Mathieu, Rest in peace.

I've decided that God (Death maybe?) is mad at celebrities, given the unusually high number of deaths in the last few weeks. Anyway-very sad to hear this news.

Throwing blood clots at his age is pretty rare. I guess the Autopsy will answer the question. Maybe a Congenital heart problem, but those tend to occur during activity.
It can happen. If it truly was an embolus its possible he may have had a clotting disorder. Very sad though..

Yeah it can definitely happen. If he had a history of clotting disorders, and he knew about it, being a top tier athlete, he would be on a blood thinner such as Coumadin or Heparin. Possibly even asparin. The Autopsy will tell. I don't want to think it was drugs, but it could be drugs. Dropping at 24 without outside chemical influences isn't normal. Makes you appreciate every day that you have doesn't it?

Mathieu was a very nice guy. I didn't deserve that kind of destiny. He was about to enter top 100...

Au revoir, on ne t'oubliera pas !

Very sad. I can't believe they suspended him for a $192 bet. Convert that to Euros and you couldn't even buy an expresso.

Wow.

I have a stupid question:

Why are tennis pros not allowed to bet on tennis matches?

What a shame, I first saw him at 15 or 16 years old. He had impressive poise and excellent groundstrokes for his age, beating people much older and more experienced. He also seemed very down to earth and a hard worker looking to improve.

You could at least answer it instead of acknowledging my utter stupidity.
because they can arrange the match with who he's betting (against) for.

Didn't remember to hear about the guy, but sad toknow that somebody so young passed away.

Guys, with all due respect, let's not make the thread about the betting issue (that can be debated elsewhere).

RIP Montcourt.

Very sad. I watched him for the first time at this years Roland Garros, but have been following his results for years..

I umpired several of Montcourt's matches in the juniors, challengers and a few tour events. He was a VERY good player with a lot of potential in the near future. He was pretty intense at times during the points, but in between points always looked calm and collected. He seemed to be a very smart player. It's really a very sad story. Thoughts and prayers with his family!

Mathieu Montcourt est mort d'un infarctus

mer 08 jui, 16h49
