Wilander to coach Golovin

Sat, 21 Jul 2007

Former world number one Mats Wilander has agreed to coach Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin during the American hardcourt season and at the US Open, the French Tennis Federation said on Friday.

Wilander, who won seven Grand Slam titles in his career including the 1988 US Open, will also be with the world number 19 Golovin at tournaments in Los Angeles and Toronto.

The FFT added that the link-up could be extended until the end of the year and into 2008.

hopefully this will help her achieve better results for the rest of the season. I had high hopes for her after her impressive win in Amelie Island. But sorry to say but the year so far as been a huge disappointment

That's interesting, thanks for the info. Golovin reminds me of Gasquet a bit, very talented and lots of potential but still haven't made huge impacts or results. Hope this works out!

You should definitely read the April 2007 issue of Tennis magazine saying that the French are "Jack of all trades, Masters to none".

In fairness to her she has had a hard time with injuries since her win in Amelia Island.

Maybe he can get her to use her weapons more effectively and fulfill some of her still unfulfilled potential. He was such a smart player. Maybe exactly what she needs.

Sorry guys, nothing to do with Golovin/Wilander but... Zaragoza, do you live in Spain or abroad? I am just curious. I haven't found many spanish people in these forums. I used to live in Madrid, but moved to Alicante due to my job.

Do you play tennis? What level? You can contact me via e-mail...

This is great news! I became a Golovin fan during the Amelie Island semi-final against Ivanovic. I really hated watching watching that match on Eurosport. The commentators kept saying she couldn't win since she had a 0-5 H2H against Ana (if I'm not mistaken) and kept mentioning weaknesses in Golovin's game. They really got me rooting for the underdog. Then during the last set they realized she might win and had nothing but sweet words to say about Tatiana's game all of a sudden. And she won, making them look like jackasses.

I saw her play Sharapova at the U.S Open last year in the quarters. That match truly showed her great potential. She had chances galore to win both sets in that match, but wasnt able to win the key points so lost 7-6, 7-6 when she could easily have won in straight sets. She would not have had that kind of opportunity vs Sharapova at that event, where Sharapova was almost unstoppable as her subsequent matches with Mauresmo and Henin showed, without some real ability.
