Mattek-Sands. Get up to the net.

Watched the third set. BMS up 5-0. Li Na comes back. 5-2. Momentum shifting big time. Li Na obviously the better player. She could rip off 7 straight games to win the match. BMS serving to hold and win the match herself. Close ups of BMS' face show a decidedly worrisome look - am I going to lose this after being up 5-0 in the third set?. 15 all. Li Na returns serve to mid court BMS forehand. Aggressive deep approach shot to Li Na's backhand as BMS comes to net. Easy drop angle forehand volley into the open court. BMS up 30-15. Match over.
Second time she came to net in the third. For the match, she was, are you ready, 5-5 in net points. She can volley. Good doubles player. Knows her way around the area. BMS get up to the net and start winning more of these kind of matches. Rant over.

Fair point -- she certainly has had good results in doubles and knows her way around the net. Also, so many of the WTA players are, well, apprehensive when somebody comes forward that it's an even better play than it is in the men's game.

OP, no real issue with your rant, but...

If you do come to net and get passed a few times that can really fire up the opponent. And it is red clay and it's cold and damp, slowing things down more.

Li Na runs real hot and cold - even for the WTA. :)

volleying in singles is very different from volleying in doubles which is what she is best at. Getting to the net in an offensive position is the tough part in singles.

She does need to come to net more. She is a great shotmaker from the ground but too inconsistent to play all the points from there only. She adds more of her all court doubles game in there and she could be a top 10 player.
