Did you guys hear what Cliffy had to say about mattress mac and Roger Federer? Seems he will have no choice but to deal with him even though he is extremely biased with american players.

Topspin, could you elaborate on what Cliff Drysdale said about Mattress Mac? I didn't watch the matches today.

On a side note, I stopped in Mattress Mac's store last weekend. It's quite an adventure - there's always something going on. He did have two Ferrari's on display in the store, which I enjoyed checking out.

He said that Mac invited Federer to play at the ClayCourt championships. He then mentioned how a lot of the guys at the masters complained about the american biasm, and how Fed didn't like Mac too much or something. Yet Mac was gonna have to deal with him now cause Fed was #1 in the world. Federer better deny that tournament invite. If he does accept it, he has to win the tourney, preferably beating Roddick in the final to rub it in on Mac. But if I were him, I wouldn't show up at all.

If the $$ are right, he'll show... Federer's a professional, bush league antics by his opponents or the guy putting on the venue aren't going to stop him from walking away with the title. Right now the only person who can stop FedEx is FedEx.

I also believe it whould be wise for him to play in the us clay court championships. He has to play in clay an the option is to play in Europe, with the all the clay court specialists. It may also sound odd but I would give Andre the advantage on clay over Roger, at least at the beginning on the clay season, Andre always was great adapting quicker than the other guys.

    matress mac

Could be Matress Mac is trying to make ammends with Rodger if for no other reason than his own self interest. Matress Mac has taken a lot of heat from us faithful regarding his behavior. I think he wants to be respected, and if Fedex were to snub Matress Mac, then the value of his capitol in the tennis world would decrease.

Agassi ain't gonna play the clay court's this year at all, save for RG. Roddick will play it, and that's who'd I'd love for Federer to take out.

Federer isn't going to play in Houston in April, he's already committed to another tournament and why would he show up there just to have Mac yell at him and call him names again.

After all the heat Mattress Mac took after Houston, I don't think he'll be much of a problem for the other players this year.

First, whats so great about that tournament. Its just a 500th-tier tournament thousands of miles away from Roland Garros. Second, who does Mac think he is.

I bet FedEx's stringer could stop him for a match...Who knows, Fed might even be able to play with 14g kevlar at 22lbs...

Forget the US Claycourt championships for Federer.

Tactically it would be a terrible move for him to go there. Now that Agassi is not playing in it there really isn't any elite prospects for Roland Garros.

Furthermore the timing of that tournament would be bad if he is going to go for winning MOnte Carlo and the rest of the big money claycourt events.

It's a minor tournament; many of the participants are Americans who have absolutely no chance to win the big Euro-clay court tournaments. For players like Roddick and Agassi, it's a nice chance for a win.

Why would Federer, who can play on clay with the best, go to the US to play in this 3rd tier event when he has the chance-but not to say that he WILL-to win every clay tournament being played.

Continuation of the Cliff comment..."Fed's business manager Marika Vavrec (also his gf) said that he'd just been invited but she said it was too short notice. " Smart, move, Mac Now no one can say he wasn't invited. What a sneaky, big-mouthed individual. I won't flatter him by calling him a man.

    Funny side note:

I'm a member of a tennis club in Houston owned by him!

It's a great club but at the same time I've never seen him. He's a legend here in Houston!

Hmm. Was not aware of him.

Okay, so it's an actual mattress mogul. If he's so fond of facilitating sleep, maybe he can reverse the mission for the sake of tennis!

This thread is from 2004 lol. But he's a wealthy businessman who runs a furniture store called Gallery Furniture here in Houston. I think he used to sponsor the tournament held at Westside many many years ago, but not so much anymore, as the only tournament held here is the River Oaks Clay Court Championships held every April. It's a decent event, but only a 250, so the field is a tad weak. I did see Lleyton Hewitt and Fernando Gonzalez one year (2010) and then I saw Isner and Sam Querrey once year as well. I also spotted Nishikori warming up on an outer court, but that was really before he became a big time player, I want to say this was back in 2011.

    I was alive then... :)

Was looking for some old news on Fed and/or Mac and this one jumped. Just didn't know about this apparent bedding tycoon.

Great that you saw all of those guys. In all sincerity, I think it would be cool if the various titans of industry who back US tennis tournaments could band together to step up the collective product.

Unfortunately in the words of Gordon Gecko, "Greed, for lack of a better word, is good." Probably all about the money for these guys, so I don't see a collaborative effort on their part to try and put out a collective product.

In that case, I wish the sponsors that line their coffers would unilaterally compensate them with sandpaper.
