May 2023 - The last time Medvedev won a title

[As of 11 May 2025] Pretty much exactly 2 years since Medvedev lifted a tour level trophy, when he won Rome in extraordinary fashion. His first and only title on clay, and 5th of the 2023 season capping off a very successful stretch post the Australian Open.

What happened? Did he just fall behind the pace? Age related decline? Is his baseline game just too predictable and easy to blunt with hard hitting / attacking tennis?

Not sure what the stats are on this - is there anyone else in the current Top 20 who has not won any title in this period, or is he the ONLY one?

He will be 30 in 9 months time, of course he is past his prime, no surprise.

Medvedev's next generation is Fonesca.
Nadal's next generation was Medvedev
Kuerten's next generation was Nadal

and so on.... this is wht we call a generation gap... not 5-6 years.... full 10 years.

Agree that he's probably post prime - he's now just outside the Top 10 but hasn't slipped way down the rankings just yet. There's still a semblance of consistency

Unlikely that he'll be able to reinvent himself and experience a late career surge like some other folks

Yup, even reinventing wont do him much good because it is not like he was dominating in his 20s, so 30 onwards he will be lucky to even enter top 10, I dont think he will be in top 10 at 30+.

His results haven't been that bad (outside of being title-less) in the big tournaments, namely slams and Indian Wells. He's made some QFs/SFs here and there, but ran into Sinner or Alcaraz a lot last year, and he's no longer the caliber of player that can beat them outside of a really good day (USO SF/Wimbledon QF). He's also no longer the same hard court specialist that he once was and finding an easier time on slower surfaces. This is due in part to a decline in two of his former claims to fame: his speed and his serve. Unironically, he has a better winning percentage on clay in recent years.

But yeah, it's weird that he can't seem to pick up a title. He did enter a 250 this year during his worst slump and realistically could have won Dubai had he not choked MPs in the QF. Was the last time he made a final really IW 2024? Winning Rome again would be very funny and trollish, but I'm not counting on it. He's not one to enter smaller tournaments just because, so I don't know if the title will come soon.

His game style requires top fitness. Especially now since his serve has dropped a little bit. He’s been trying to get more power with his string setup, but it’s hopeless. He already takes giant swings and the ball barely moves compared to these youngsters. He may snatch another title, but that may be his last.

Meddy is top 15 in race today. I think he would be back in top 10 by end of September. His game has not fallen off that much and in January he has underperformed. Simply pretty good in this year. Let's see how far meddy goes in Rome.

His game started to pick back up in Dubai then IW semi final.

Rough start to the year but openly interviewed and said with new born baby after ATP finals, he basically took the entire offseason off and no AO preseason. So not shocking the start to his season wasn’t great.

Sure he’s past prime medvedev but he did look good today. Interested to see how he plays against Musetti who’s having a great clay court season.

Medvedev I was very hesitant to put outside top 10 even in March. But now I am BACK on the meddy train. He would thrash tien when they meet again. Let the kid dare. Overrated.

He had the most inexplicable drop in serve quality I've ever seen. Every struggle he's had the last 2 years has been directly caused by that.

Even with a good serve he played such a tough style of tennis by pushing so much. But without getting any free points on serve it's been exhausting just to watch, I can't imagine what it's like for him to play it. Especially as he's only getting older.

He will be inside top 10 soon. Once he gets a big win which he would seeing the field today, he would be back. Right now he is on right path.

He was playing through a shoulder injury last year, too.

Back to the top 10 doesn't mean back. Guys like Fritz and de Minaur are in the top 10 but no one considers them real threats to win slams, or even Masters for that matter. Med can stack enough points to get back there, but that won't make him a serious contender again. He's still a long way off from his average 2019-23 form.

He is not getting to top 4 right now. Will need huge change to his game.

Top 10 is easy. I respect Fritz and demon but they are nobodies in front of meddy.

Meds a grand slam champion with high IQ.
I am not here to say that he will win a second slam. But it honestly wouldn’t shock me if he put a run together and pulled it off by making tweaks to his game.

Mussetti like Ruud has a style that just works on the dirt.
High rpm’s deep in the court that can just drive someone like med who hate the surface , wild.
Exactly. So the potential win vs him should be huge. As long as people are honest and want to give credit where it's due.

I was expecting meddy to beat Ruud in Madrid honestly and it didn’t transpire. So maybe he can be resurgent and claim back the Rome title.

Although he needs to beat mussetti, Carlos, zverev then possibly ClostoBoy

lets see i don't want to make such proclamation that he would win Rome. Just that he is underrated today and would come out of musetti match with a win.
