Maya Joint forfeits $210,000 US Open Prize Money in order to stay eligible for USA College

I read about this at the weekend, and thought it was absolutely absurd.

And regarding Joint, I watched her play a couple of matches at a challenger event in June in person, and enjoyed it.

I'd already heard of her, after she won a ITF W75 title at Burnie back in February. But I liked her playing style, with aggressive groundstrokes, the ability to hit winners from many different positions and areas on the court, a good serve, tremendous movement and athleticism (she seemed to move around the court so 'effortlessly') etc. One of the matches was against a British player, but I couldn't help but be a contrarian in the crowd and root for her because I found her to be a lot of fun to watch in action.

I thought that she could easily have a bright future ahead of her, and then a few months later her coming through qualifying at the US Open and then beating a top 100 ranked player Siegemund in the main draw, after also reaching the final of a WTA 125k event, was very good going.

meanwhile this college athlete is allowed to accept millions from sponsorship deals. what a joke.

What it tells us? Tennis gals should start showing more cameltoe - maybe play in tiny bikinis? - if they want to make some serious dough...

Saudis may object - but really, they probably wouldn't.

Reese Brantmeier in March 2024 filed a lawsuit against the NCAA in U.S. District Court in North Carolina (she plays for UNC Chapel Hill) asking the court to prohibit the NCAA from prohibiting individual sport athletes like her from collecting prize money. Defendant filed its answer to the complaint in June. In July, plaintiffs filed a motion to certify a class. An order appointing a mediator was entered last week. We’ll see if the parties can work it out.

Haha.

One student-athlete exploits sex symbolism and fame to get money, irrespective of how good she is.

Another is genuinely successful in her sport and isn’t allowed to receive money.

You’re right. Maya should’ve shown up to the open in a skimpy “sexy” outfit. Media would’ve lapped it up. She would’ve made a bunch of sponsorship $$$.

Her major is Psychology - should have taken the 215K.

College tennis players will never make money under the current rules cause their sport generates no revenue (I imagine most lose money) and no one watches or cares so there will be no endorsements.

Did the 16 y/o American who made the 3rd round (Iva ?) keep her money?

I guess

But after taxes it would be how much? Should be less than 150k

She must be getting free education which is very costly as well

Iva Jovic:

She lost to the 29th seed in a tight three set match in R2 main draw singles.
She lost R1 doubles.
She lost in R2 mixed doubles
She was upset in R2 girls singles by the eventual champion.

I don’t know if she took her prize money. She certainly deserved it. She played in four events. o_O

She’s smallish but very good ground strokes and movement. She could teach Shapo about being in balance when hitting a BH.

Ironically, if the NCAA allowed indvidual sports to earn money outside of the college matches, it might really bolster the level of tennis at the college level.
I wonder how many pros in the 200-400's would play college and pro tennis. Maybe even some of the younger players up and comping players would stay in college while doing the tour 50% of the time.
On top of that, wouldn't that be great for the school to have a US Open 3rd rounder or a quarterfinalist in a Master Tournament.

Probably some advertising territory rules preventing it, but if a player was still on college and they wore their college jersey in the pro events, what a way to bolster college tennis and the univeristy.

Maybe the college want to pinch some of the college Pro tennis player's huge Tour prize money lol

1) Does US College cost more than $210,000?
2) Can't tennis players, who have played serious professional tennis, attend American colleges and play tennis there?

US colleges typically run 20K-90K a year (tuition, board, food, etc.). But, if she is on the tennis team of a D1 school she would probably get a full scholarship. So if she goes to a prestigious school 4 years at a good D1 could be worth around $240K.

Not sure about #2. my guess is that if you earned a certain amount as a professional you are no longer eligible to pay in college. You can be a student and get a degree--but you can't play on the team. I think Venus Williams grabbed a degree while on tour.

This is what I have never understood About Dunne, why is she being paid all those $$ if she could not even cut it in the Olympics or World championships. It is like paying huge sums of money to any of the non-slam winners.

I don't think the makers of joggers look at gymnastic rankings in order to pick who they want to represent them. Kinda like why Kournikova made a lot more in endorsements than many major winners.

I know who this lady is.
Don't really know any other US Gymnasts until the olympics are on, Then forget who they are afterwards.
Marketing and image is what sells.

In Kournikova's defense she was in the women's league playing, Dunne is still just in the juniors as long as gymnastics is concerned. There are a 100 women better looking than her to pick for jogging.

won her first title today, up to 53 in the rankings! and won the doubles as well. guess forgoing college tennis was wise.

An excellent week for her. I knew she was a big talent and had a bright future, but I wasn't sure if she'd win her first WTA title this soon. I'm sure more will follow - she certainly has the technical ability and groundstokes and athleticism to enjoy a successful career. Hopefully she won't have to wait as long as Sakkari did for a 2nd title after she won her first title at this same tournament !

And hopefully she will set-up the expected R2 match at RG against Paolini and then make it as competitive as possible - she faces Tomljanovic in R1 who she also faced in her SF at Rabat (with Tomljanovic retiring after the 1st set through illness).

She's the 2nd youngest player in the WTA top 100 (after Mirra Andreeva).

I know the game has gotten a lot older since the 90s/00s, but its still kind of shocking to hear a 19 year old is the 2nd youngest player in the top 100. Kind of puts into perspective how young Gauff was compared to the entire tour for most of her career (I think when she played Andreeva 2 years ago that was the first time in her career she played someone younger than her)
