McEnroe Picks Federer To Make It Seven Wimbledon Titles

G.O.A.T.
John McEnroe believes that Roger Federer will draw level with Pete Sampras on seven Wimbledon titles by winning The Championships at the All England Club.

McEnroe, who won three Wimbledon titles and recently announced that he will return to play in the Statoil Masters Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall in December, says that the grass of SW19 is Federer’s best chance of adding to his record haul of 16 Grand Slam titles.

“I'm picking him (Federer) to win this year at Wimbledon,” said McEnroe, in a conference call to launch ESPN’s coverage of The Championships.

“Even though it looks like the gap has grown between the other two (Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal) and him, to me Wimbledon is Federer’s best chance to win another major. He seems to still want it as much as he ever has. He’s a lot better athlete than he's given credit for. His movement has allowed him to remain incredibly healthy for the most part - I think this is going to be his 52nd straight major. He's been to 32 straight quarters or better. His record speaks for itself. I think he's got a great chance this year. Certainly at Wimbledon he has a shot the next couple years to me.”

Federer’s most recent Wimbledon title came in 2009 when he defeated Andy Roddick 16-14 in the final set, and McEnroe feels that the two things he needs to do more this year are to attack the net, and use the energy of the crowd.

“People are pulling for him, so he should use the crowd to his favor,” said McEnroe. “I'd be interested to see if he does any of that because he doesn't show much on the court. It seems like he's losing out on something that could help him maybe against these other two guys (Djokovic and Nadal).”

Cheers

HIT IT UP FOR JOHNNY MAC!!!! :)

I'm picking Federer as well and I'm not a fed fan by any stretch of the imagination.

But he is an amazing grass court player and now with the added advantage of a roof his chances improve even more.

This will be his most important slam final on many levels.

I'm pulling for Fed, but...

The answer to everything from McEnroe is to come to the net more and get the crowd behind you. This goes for every......single.....player....on....the....tour. Every match. "Get the crowd behind you, come to the net more.." Federer is about being cool and calm, not being an emotional player. He was at his height when the crowd was getting bored of him and not cheering loudly.

Mac was a brilliant tennis player, as a commentator and a human being, he sucks, and he's a jerk, respectively. I just wish he and his brother would have their tentacles removed from the USTA so we can start developing so great American players. These guys have a dinosaur mentality and aren't very bright, despite what they think.

Agreed. What he says isn't worth ****.

7 wins to get his hands on the trophy, plus 6 for the Olympics, that would be incredible, 13 wins on the grass at Wimbledon in a few weeks. What are the odds on that? Once you get your hands on the Wimbledon trophy, you must feel invincible so maybe the second part is inevitable after doing the first. But it would be just immense.

I think Fed should use the crowd more. it helped when he was struggling in 2008 at the USO.. why not see what that energy can do for him again?

Fed has no chance, 1bh and a tiny racket. The modern game has left him standing with his luggage at the train station of tennis.

oh, and si had fed/ novak and nadal/ raonic in the semis and rafa/ fed in the finals. so si expects fed to beat djokovic and rafa in succession. i don't know if that's automatic.

Impossible. As much as I would like to see fed hoist a 7th wimbly trophy, this tournament belongs to nadal and djokovic now

It would be incredible if Federer or Haas do it, because they aren't as good as Rafa and Djokovic. Really its more about whether they can improve on their previous year and help their ranking :D So semi-final is a big enough achievement for Federer.

i don't think so, but there seem to be few threats in his quarter, maybe Simon or Isner(?) but they might not make it that far.

He can probably beat Djokovic on grass too. But Nadal? at this stage in his career? I don't see it.

I think a Djokovic semi-final would either be straight sets Djokovic or a 5 setter going one way or the other. It's just really hard to imagine Federer winning easily over Djokovic at a slam Djokovic won last year (or any slam for that matter) :D

So that would mean Federer will be worn out when he faces Rafa. And Rafa has a habit of avoiding 5-setters in QF/SF at Wimbledon.

If nothing else I agree that he should go to the net more often, if for no other reason than to keep himself fresh for the big matches...

looking through this thread

TeamNadal - banned
GodNovak - banned
The Dark Knight - banned

Thank god for that

Federer has not been moving as well on the grass as usually. Even with his backhand slice he can't seem to get his footing in place.

It will be something to see him vs. Djokovic

yeah they will probably be back soon, bullzilla/nadalwon/teamnadal/etc probably already has 6 non banned accounts from which to troll anyway

I think bullzilla is striving to be the greatest troll of all time (GTOAT). I noticed he's already busy with his new account, 6-1 6-3 6-0.

If Federer wins, Sampras basically holds no tennis record anymore on his own, except the 6 years end no. 1, which I don't find too interesting because it's just another week.

Also, Federer never had a priviledge of a well subar field in 1997-1998. Just look what Sampras had to do in 1998 to be ranked 1st that season. It's a joke.

Federer had Nadal almost from day 1 and also Djokovic in the last couple of years,

Damn am I good or what?

I called it right and for the right reason back on 6/22.
