Now I thought I would have a go and post this thread here. Maybe it’s of interest or not but anyway that’s how it is on forums.
In the last couple of years I have noticed myself hardly switching on the TV and not particularly keen on listening in on mainstream radio in the car. The only time I switched on the TV was to watch the tennis or some other sports event and that’s about it. I think it’s interesting to be able to tune into some digital platform fromfar away places on the globe to get an idea of what they are talking about and the different views and attitudes the people have.
I will say that these days I tend to listen to online digital media, news, YouTube, podcasts, zoom conferences and other independent platforms. Ok on rare occasions I will listen to the news and talk back radio to get an idea of what’s being said or promoted by the mainstream legacy media plus since there is cross media ownership, you will get the stuff popping up on your homepage on your computer right. Problem with talk back radio for example is that it’s very controlled and screened so only the views of the organisation tends to get aired.
On the other hand sometimes when I listen to some channels in the digital world I wonder whether they only reach a certain demographic and audience and get lost in the digital jungle. There must be lots and lots of channels for any group, culture or topic. The content creators could be producing excellent work but if only a small segment of society access it, it may not cut through. Plus they would probably hope they can make some money out of the content they produce:
I would imagine that the different generations and age groups would also make different choices as to what form of media they prefer and how they like to interact with it. There are some podcasters and YouTube channels that have become very successful and challenged the mainstream media.
I don’t know whether this is of interest to you but I would be interested in getting your views about media and how best to stand out and cut through the digital jungle, or you may still prefer the traditional TV and radio live broadcast. It’s still free to listen to the radio in the car and watch free to air TV.
Anyway what do you think ? What do you tune into ? Do you think that mainstream media is losing its influence on many listeners in your country ?
