Both beat djokovic in the final, although Wawrinka beat in a tighter contest but Medvedev probably faced a bigger challenge pre match. So who wins in this hypothetical matchup in a us open final

2016 Djokovic was worse than 2021 Djokovic for me.
Also Stan played better in sense but Med would be a hard matchup for Stan due too his solid defence and baseline game plus his serve be hard for Wawrinka too deal with.

Stan level will always be considered higher but I feel if they both played each other Med would win.
It’s like Stan causes Djokovic awful trouble in slams but too Fedal he was easy it’s all matchups

Neither 2016 or 2021 Joker were in impressive form. 2016 Joker played like 2 complete matches to make the F. He and Clownfils also played an arguably worse match than the 2020 USO F in the SF. I’d say he was in slightly better form in 2021 based on his level in the Zedrot match, and the Mad Lad beat him in straights. There’s also the TTW fact that tennis always evolves in a linear fashion every year to take into account. So, based on my calculations the Mad Lad wins in straights with no set going to a TB. So be it.

Wawrinka. Stan in that form was absolutely unbeatable.
This is not true. Stan played a Djokovic that got there due to walkovers and retirements. The level of 2016 USO Djokovic was awful and mainly you are forgetting matchups. Stan was great against Djokovic in slams but Fedal always made light work of him. His level was great but against Med style he would of never been let play like that.

I will always say Stan peak level >>> Med but Med consistent level would be troubld for Stan.
Stan in USO16 was nowhere near AO13 or RG15 level and I feel med would of wore him down

Medvedev was certainly at a higher level throughout the course of the event than Stan was. Stan almost went out to Dan Evans and then dropped a set in every match after. Medvedev knifed through the draw (including comprehensively beating Evans, incidentally).

But who would win if they met in the final? I'd probably lean to the Russian. The way Medvedev was serving, he'd be getting a lot of free points, and conversely he'd be putting loads of Wawrinka's serves back in play. Stan would definitely have his work cut out for him, being so far behind in the serve-return complex.

This is a good point. Stan had trouble with big servers and add in Meds consistentcy from the baseline which would be a nightmare. People look at Stans results against Djokovic and then rate him insanely high on that matchup alone.

Sure the thread here about a week ago was Davydenko vs Med and I was a huge Davydenko fan but his overall win record was 59% but people used his record against Nadal as a reason he was better, he matchup well with Nadal but overall was inconsistent and is nowhere near Med

All you're going to need to find out is the time machine I have just invented. Unfortunately, when you emerge in the past, your ***** ends up where your nose should be.

I think it’s actually really close. Both kinda feasted on sub-par versions of Djokovic.
In 2016 Novak was ultra unlucky. He hsd 2 or 3 walkovers. That is a massive disadvantage for any player. He had no rhythm. He is such a class act he never makes excused but 2016 he really got screwed over. Tsonga quit for no reason.

Wawrinka will own Medvedev look at what he did at AO2020

no wait Medvedev will own Wawrinka bc it’s USO look at 2019 USO QF

coin flip imo. it will depend on how Meddy serves, Wawrinka will be able to tire him out from the baseline a lot better than Djoker did.

Way Mededev returned on sunday Wawrinka would win. Medvedev would not have played casino tennis on 2nd serves v amyone other than Nole. Wawrinka would have feasted on his 2nd serve.
Del potro 2009 would have straight setted Medvedev. Mind you he would have straight setted most people except Federer in that form.

For those saying Stan, please tell me why he’d be able to return that Med serve when Novak, the GOAT returner, could not.

Yeah but what you are forgetting is Med 2021 on HC is a lot better than 2020. As I said Wawrinka has so much success against Djokovic but playing a player like Med who has Djokovic solidness from the baseline with the huge serve would be a problem.
Stan doesn’t have the best return so Med would have a advantage.
I’m 100% sure Med 2021 beats Stan 2016.
Peak Stan beats Peak Med for me though

What I’ve been saying. Stan biggest weakness is the return which against Nole isn’t that much of a problem but against Med it would be. Also Med flat strokes would require Stan to adjust a lot and I feel the US16 version doesn’t have the answers

In all seriousness, it's an interesting match-up. But there is actually no way I'm favouring Wawrinka against Medvedev on the sort of HC conditions seen at the 2021 USO. Nope.

That's Med Street. And it ain't Stan Street, so it's a double whammy.

Stan.
He'll feed off the rhythm Medvedev provides him and blast him off the court.

Medvedev for sure. I don't even have to think about this one too hard.

That 2016 USO Stan gets way overrated because it gets lumped in with his AO 14 and RG 15 wins. He walked away with the trophy, but that wasn't exactly the same peak mythical unbeatable Stanimal that people talk about.
