Medvedev - Alcaraz, a force to be reckoned with?

Can Will Daniil Medvedev or Carlos Alcaraz finish 2022 the way they started it?

Some questions I have:
- Would you like to see these two at the top of the game for the next 2 or 3 years?
- In terms of the article, do you think either or both will see success in New York and the US Open Series?
- Finally, taking it a step further, could we see these Medvedev face off against Alcaraz in the US Open final, and who would win?

Nadal-Medvedev has the potential to be like Djokovic-Nadal 2011 :happydevil:
Nadal already had the mental edge in this rivalry, but he really escalated that edge by coming from 0-2 down in the AO Final, and thrashing Medvedev at Mexico....

Come on sir, this is ridiculous on many levels to compare Medvedev with even 2021 Djokovic, leave aside 2011.

Ah, I didn't, ma'am.
The comparison between Djokovic-Nadal, and Nadal-Medvedev, is because Djokovic beat Nadal 6 times in a row during 2011 (and 7 if you count the 2012 AO).
Nadal looks set for a big winning streak over Medvedev, because the traumatic experience of losing that 2022 AO Final and then got destroyed at Mexico.
All the signs are there :happydevil:
And the mental barrier that Nadal faced, began when he lost the thrilling Finals at 2011 Indian Wells and 2011 Miami, and then the bad losses at Madrid and Rome.
2022 Medvedev could be experiencing a similar thing to 2011 Nadal.

2022 will finish regardless of what they do.

Can they and Will they are entirely different questions.

Given alcarazs slam losses, it'd seem there's more learning and development time needed. Otoh, zverev is out and that weakens an already shallow tour further, so opportunities may come up. If Djokovic is out and Nadals fitness becomes suspect, it's anyone's slam to win. Don't forget sinner either.

I never forget the Sinner.

Oh yes please.
And with less drama this time, 4 set win for Nadal as it should have been at AO.

More like in 2021 - Med lost in a blowout at the AO, then beat a tired out old man in New York.

This year, Med barely lost a 5-setter at the AO, then beats a worn-out Rafa in New York.

Djokovic wasn't tired, but rather overwhelmed by the ocassion; also, he was playing pretty crap all week except for clutch serving and even that went away in the final; combining all this with Medvedev having the best serving day of his life on a fast-ish court & day conditions, we got the 3×6-4 sets. Hell, this could have been a totally different match altogether had Djokovic not clown around earlier in set2 and focused enough to break when Medvedev was right up there for the taking.

There are no reasons to assume that it'll be repeated again this year, because :-

1) Nadal won't be under the overwhelming pressure of CYGS
2) Its not written that Nadal will also play crap tennis all week
3) Nadal poses far more matchup problems to Medvedev than Djokovic does
4) That serving display was one of its kind, Medvedev is far from guaranteed to have another similar one.

Nadal is the best at playing under the pressure of records, because he's been taking records on clay for a long time, for example when he tied Borg at Roland Garros, and then overtook Borg at Roland Garros, it was a lifetime ago, so playing for records is very easy for him now.
In fact every time he sets foot at Roland Garros there is more pressure than anyone has ever faced, and he routinely wins the trophy nearly every year :happydevil:

So nothing he ever faces at the US Open will be difficult, when compared to Roland Garros. And its even easier when he plays Medvedev, because the gap between them has become so great that Nadal can afford to lose the first 2 sets.
Whereas Djokovic seems to struggle when records are involved. I guess Djokovic is too obsessed with records, and that is why he fails..... plus he's too reliant on athleticism, whereas Nadal has more variety that can trouble Medvedev.

Good article but Alcaraz is 19 and Med is 26 an age where he should be at his absolute Peak and dominating. Even if Carlos doesn't do anything for the rest of the year, he still has plenty of time to achieve his potential. Whereas Med has to make hay in the next 2 years and especially in the hard court GS tourneys

No, Djokovic was tired (or injured). Medvedev did play great tennis, and I have always said that. Still, there are a few reasons to think he may struggle.

1) Rafa won't be under any pressure, but he is dealing with his second major injury of the year
2) Rafa won't play poorly, but there are others who are playing better than last year
3) Agreed, but he was still down 2-sets to love.
4) Then again, Rafa had more pop on his serve at the AO
