Medvedev and Osaka

Med will finish with more than Osaka. Sabalenka is just getting started.

Gonna be hard to do without winning the European Slams.
True, but there’s nothing physiological keeping her from winning those. She just hasn’t taken to them yet. She’ll probably be the favorite to win Wimbledon, right?

I definitely think Osaka can get to 10+ slams, and she she is working really hard to adapt her game to grass and clay, so its just a matter of time, when she makes a slam breakthrough on one of those surfaces!
She has such easy power and has good movement as well. I also think her counterpunching skills are quite underrated also, as she absorbs and redirects pace well!
I think the main weakness in her game, is perhaps the lack of variety and net skills. If she can work on that aspect of her game, she will do well at Wimbledon

I think Medvedev can get to at least 5 slams, he defends to well, and has a big serve. I'm a big fan of his very unorthodox style! His backhand is so solid.
Despite his lack of success on the clay, I mean 2/4 of the slams are on hardcourts. The Big 3 are close to the end of the careers, to Med will continue to big one of the big contenders at slams along with Thiem, Tsitsipas and Zverev.

I agree with this, but not the bolded...

Coz this never prevented a host of WTA ATGs from success...

I don't think she will be very successful at the FO and W, her success will be very hardcourt oriented... Also maybe other players will become her rivals. I think Andreescu could do it, it was very unlucky that she got injured and has to start over again, but I believe she will win many more slams.

i hope andreescu doesn't become another pim-pim scenario. when was the last time she played a match? but agree--pre-injuries she was my pick for next wta #1 for sure.

Medvedev might suffer injuries because he's a giant trying to run like a rabbit all over the court.

Maybe 2-3 more years at the top, no more.
If I had a nickel for the number of times people here predicted the same for Nadal 15 years ago.

18 majors later...

Rafa was born from the union of a spanish woman and a zeta reticuli being disguised as a restaurant owner.

Half-man and half-alien.

Medvedev is a mere mortal.

I'd give Med more than 2-3 years at the top due to advancements and the like, but I agree that he isn't an ATG talent (probably not a 5 major winner either) and that he may suffer injuries at 6'6 with his playing style.

Steven, here I have to disagree with you (maybe). Or maybe not.

You assert that, in your view, Medvedev is not winning 5 Slams. After the level he displayed in late 2019, including his USO 2019 run, I thought Daniil was the new emerging force that would win about 5 Slams. His 2020 season was a mess in terms of Slams performance and I forgot about Daniil. Now, if Medvedev wins tomorrow the final, I will think again he has the potential to win 5 Slams. If he doesn't, I will probably concur with you that 5 Slams may be too much for the Russian. The final of tomorrow will tell a lot about his Slam winning potential.

She lost the "Phillip Island Trophy" (WTA 250 they organized for players who were eliminated from AO in the first week) semi-final to Bouzkova just three days ago. She is, however, once again injured with a leg injury and pulled out of the tournament she was supposed to play next week.

I don't personally think Andreescu is likely to win more Majors with so many injury problems, but that's just me.

yeah that would stink. imo she was the best of the bunch...can hit as hard as osaka but had better hands and more creativity. she was very interesting to watch.

My sincere apologies to Osaka for this thread, I never meant to disrespect you by comparing you to mental midget Medvedev.

Sabalenka? I seriously doubt she will be a threat to Osaka.

Indeed. Medvedev cannot even win a single major, but now he's set to win more than a player who is clear, dominant force in the sport.

Yeaaahhh, sure.
I stand by my position. Just because it didn't happen at AO21 doesn't mean it won't happen.

Osaka has 4 majors, Daniil has none. Osaka is also 1.5 years younger and I think she has a better shot at the European slams than Med does going forward.

I’d like to see Med win some slams going forward, he’s the best under 30 player imo, but I don’t think he’s an ATG player (if he was, he would be number 1 by now)

There’s no young player in men’s tennis right now who could bully the big 3 at a slam the way Osaka has done to Serena the last two times they met at majors

5+ slams is entering ATG territory, I can't imagine Medvedev reaches that level. I think he'll end up with a couple of hard court slams and that's it. He's results are so poor on other surfaces

sabalenka will definitely be a threat in the immediate future, if she continues to love dictating play against her opponents as much as she loves actual dictators

Medvedev is now at must win territory at USO this year if he ever wants a slam.

Yeh Zverev is probably in a similar predicament then. But I think their window is a bit longer than just the next few months, but it might not be much longer.
Zverev will never win a Major i am certain of it. This double fault issue has gone on way too long and his FH is a massive issue. He apparently is very hard to coach and does not listen so it looks to me he will not accept his game has those techincal issues.
Tsitsipas i think is possibly one to watch. I think he might come close at Roland Garros. AO was a fast court so not overly surprised medevedev creamed him but on clay his ros issues should be negated and his BH looks like it is more reliable this year. Obviously Nadal is the brick wall there but i think if a Next Gen breaksthrough as odd as it sounds it could be Tsitsipas at FO.

I don’t like him, but it’s hard to say never when he almost did.

Had he been mentally tougher he should be on 2 slams now. USO 2020 and AO 2021. Outplayed thiem then choked horribly. Outplayed Djokovic in QF for large parts and choked. Not sure how he gets round the choking tbh.
Thiem was also choking, which put that match up for grabs. Too bad for him he didn’t take advantage of the crowdlessness, which I would think is more conducive to not choking. I still think there will be tournaments where his strokes are inexplicably not breaking down. I’ll give him two for his career, when it really should be more like eight.
