Interesting insight into his mindsight right about now, again, mentions the balls and how he hasn't been happy about it for 2-3 years.

Q. Bad luck, Daniil. Not the start you wanted obviously. What do you need to work on for your next match on Tuesday?

Medvedev: No idea. Just try to do better. If it doesn’t work, I’m happy to be out. If it works, I’m happy to be still in.

Q. First of all, do you remember last time you made three double faults in a row? Second question: Would you define this surface? Slow, very slow, super slow?

Medvedev: Yeah, I heard it’s slower, but it’s still pretty fast. I would call it maybe either average or average fast. I don’t think it’s slow.

Three double faults? I don’t know. I probably did with Popyrin, but I’m not sure. I did like 14, so it might have been there. It’s okay. As I said, happens. I will work on it, try to fix it. So far I didn’t manage to do it since last match. I have a minimum two more matches here – or maximum – and we’ll see how it goes.

Q. Today doing all the things with the rackets. What comes through your mind when you do that? What do you expect to happen when you do it?

Medvedev: Unfortunately, nothing comes from my mind, and I expect nothing. I get angry, frustrated. This time completely with myself, not with anyone. Just with myself. Yeah, very frustrated.

I mean, tough break point. Shank, on the line. I was like, ‘Whatever, I lost the match. I don’t care.’ I mean, you have to finish the match. You cannot withdraw, no? I just finished the match.

Q. Were you surprised the way Taylor was staying in the long, long rallies, winning a lot of those long rallies?

Medvedev: Not at all. The balls make that everyone can do it now. So not at all surprised. I have this every day, day in, day out, since like two, three years.

Every practice is a struggle. Every match is a struggle. I was holding for long time. Now I feel zero pleasure of being on the court. So no surprise at all about the match today.

Q. Daniil, are you just hoping for this year to be finished?

Medvedev: 100%. It’s the first time I say it. Usually, like, ATP Finals were not easy for me. The only time I won it was when the year started [again at the] US Open [in 2020], so it’s a little bit different.

But like I always fight. As I said, since long time I fight with something that doesn’t depend on myself. I’m a good fighter. I am still four in the world. Might be five if Taylor plays good here. Still pretty decent. I’m sure a lot of guys would like it.

But now I’m tired to fight it. I’m tired to fight against something that doesn’t depend on myself. I’ll see how it goes. Today, actually I had my chances. I’ll have them the next matches. If it doesn’t work out, I go on holiday. I’m happy.

Q. You made a few comments with the balls on tour over the last few weeks. Will that affect your preparation for next season? Will your team try to make adjustments for 2025?

Medvedev: 100%. That’s the goal. We of course always try. We will try because, again, I feel like I still can win against a lot of players. I could have won the match today being maybe in a better shape or even being just a bit more lucky and not hitting for sure three double faults.

For sure we will try something. We’re not sure it’s going to work. We will have a good pre-season, try to see what I can do better from my side. As I say, I feel like I’m in a big disadvantage, but I need to do something with it.

For the moment, I couldn’t find the exact way, like I can find the way through some matches like Shanghai, Beijing, even US Open. I can fight my way. I can try to find solutions during the match. I didn’t find the exact solution of, okay, I come to the court and I know kind of how I want to play and what I want to do.

As he said, literally everyone can stay in the rally with me right now. Every match I come, I know that basically I have to hit whatever. It doesn’t matter. Tactics matter less. It’s just about fighting and serving well. So I’m going to work a lot on pre-season to try to find some solutions, for sure.

This is what I feared when I saw the score. The kid really has stopped dreaming. Medvedev has fought, scratched and clawed for years and only has 1 slam to show for it. Had to deal with Nadal and Djokovic and they stole half his prime and now with Alcaraz and Sinner it doesn't look like he will ever have a window. Could have easily won USO19, AO22, AO24...... very painful losses

Anything to idea ball has been radically changed? And how? Sorry if ignorant, but how do you make it easier to rally by changing ball composition?

The Dunlop AO balls are notoriously fluffy. (Seriously, get a can and try them.)

That said, the ATP Finals are (supposedly) using the Dunlop ATP balls, which I don't know if they have the same playability concerns.

Some balls fluff up fast and don’t favor flat hitters like Medvedev - he doesn’t want them used. Meanwhile they favor heavy topspin players like Ruud and he wants players to stop complaining about the balls. There is no fairness or unfairness here. Whatever ball they use will favor one style of player or the other. The tournaments have decided that the balls favoring spin and slowing down shots/serves lead to longer points which are more entertaining for most fans. Who can blame them for that?

Medvedev hasn't won a title since Rome 2023, that is a very long time ago now for someone of his caliber. Even if he couldn't pick up a slam, that is one thing, but he hasn't been able to even win a 250 since May of last year. He seems reigned to his fate also, when he speaks about Sinner in particular.

He's also starting to reach the age where legs slow down. I feel his 2025 will be do-or-die.

Most of the tour agrees with him.
He just doesn’t care what you think when he gets out in public and speaks his mind about it.

It obviously doesn’t warrant the behavior he displayed on court though. That was next level petty. I like med but he melted down and you can completely tell he’s got zero confidence.

Even w/o winning as much as he has in the past, he's still #4 somehow, w few points to defend. This is a testament to his consistency, even while he hates slow conditions (balls or surface).

To be honest he has sucked a lot post Wimbledon. His performance till wimby was legit top 4. Now it's legacy pts and he will fall hard next year if he doesn't improve.

He played very well in USO, Beijing and Shanghai as well. After Shanghai he mailed it in.
Maybe he played well in Beijing because I don't remember. He didn't play well in other two at all. I remember he played Carlos tough. But Carlos is no barometer he is hit and miss player.

He lost to sinner in 4 at USO QF.
He lost to Carlos in 2 tight sets in SF Beijing
Lost to sinner in straights at QFs in Shang hai.

So yes he performed well until losing to both guys clearly above his level.
He also pulled out of Vienna due to shoulder injury which he had all year.

No one is really going to count the 6 kings slam bc he looked disinterested from the start.

It's just big names. Don't get too attached to them. His performance in all of them was negative.
Plus same thing in laver cup exho and in six kings exho he was whitewashed. 0 and 3 or something.

Another bad loss to fritz. I think among top players his fall from form is the most dangerous.

Maybe.
Laver cup he lost in 3 sets both matches.

He’s still #4 in the world and he had points to defend from that he didn’t successfully :
- Miami Champ
- Rome champ
- Rotter dam and Dubai champ
- us o Finalist.

So while he clearly looks completely frustrated and out of it - I wouldn’t look at it as he’s officially done just yet. An off-season of 6 weeks rest can change things. Or he might fizzle out of the top 10. Who knows.

I haven't decided to give up on him but it's very hard to pick him for any title soon. He would need physical fitness plus some desire to be playing tennis again. I think he is just burnt out.

Not that many top players are able to sustain a level at least close to their best one for more than five years. Especially non ATGs. Med's decline is not that surprising to me. It's not as brutal as Tsitsipas's but it is noticeable.
Yeah the thing is - as he gets closer to 30 , he can’t continue that grind til the opponent gasses out. He did it in Australia this year and it cost him his legs in the final where he probably should’ve won if he played maybe 1 less 5 setter.

I think a coaching change would do him best. One that forces him to be a bit more uncomfortable from his norm and become more aggressive. I think someone has shown his shot charts of his MPH on his ground strokes are still up there. It’s taking more chances on shots instead of rallying for 20 balls straight consistently.

Time off and maybe a coaching change will help.
He needs to get more aggressive.
Adding Simon in a time he needed to get more aggressive was the wrong move.

He's 1-7 against Sinner since Rome 23, so it's an understandable resignation. And the 1 win was a short lived victory, as he immediately lost to Alcaraz the next round. A player he's 1-5 against in that same time period.

I might just be projecting here, but having his confidence destroyed at the big tournaments has seeped into the rest of the calendar for him. I don't think he cares about winning 500s anymore when he's not able to build on it and win masters or majors because he's always losing to the top guys every time he makes a deep run anyway.

Medvedev and Roddick are often compared; late-career blues could be something they end up having in common. Roddick won a slam and reached no. 1 at a young age; for the next few years, he was in the mix at the slams but was frequently stymied by Federer. He could never manage to add a second slam title to his resume, and eventually the other tournaments also became a struggle as more and more younger talents emerged. Roddick retired at age 30 (almost to the week). For the last two years of his career, he was essentially an also-ran at the slams and the Masters events, although he could still muster a couple of small tournament titles. But retired at 30! In view of the careers we've seen over the past dozen years, Roddick's departure now has an almost Borgian abrupt goodbye feel to it, or at least a Wilanderish "the tank is empty" premature collapse.

So that’s the thing I’m going to say about medvedev: he knows going forward he needs to beat Both sinner and Carlos in grand slams or 1000 atp tourneys to win titles.
Does he have full confidence ?
Can he get it back and change up his game a bit? He started to with the return of serve positioning. But meds serve needs work on it’s own.

If he cannot fully change his game and doesn’t see results this upcoming season - it wouldn’t shock me if he decides to call it a career at 29.
