Medvedev quits match with no explanation

That's pretty awful, I don't think even massive d*uches like Kyrgios or Paire would do something like that. And to do it to Felix of all people ? Yikes. IMO had it been a less chill and peaceful player than Felix he wouldn't have dared to behave like that.

Maybe he thinks, why play if other players are doping and getting away with it? WADA's clowning around can make players distrust the whole tennis system. I won't be surprised if tennis players would start to revolt or boycott ATP and WTA. Many tennis players feel injustice in the doping system now.

All roads lead to Crazytown. "Looks like Sinner got only a three-month ban, so that means I can play only one set today, tops. That'll show 'em! And then I'll strike a blow against WADA by turning my back on FAA. The corrupt authorities will quail before my mighty protest!"

Medvedev is an intriguing fellow. His interviews are always among the best, he's articulate and never dull. He's obviously very intelligent, but he's capable of the most bizarre behaviour too.

It's quite amusing to see Russian tennis players like Medvedev on the receiving end of russophobic and hateful comments, even though they live in the West, have Western super rich lifestyles, and have pretty much signed any and every loyalty oath they could find stating that they do not support the ongoing war.

I guess this is what happens to you when you sell your soul to those who hate you for what you are.

Medvedev is one of the players on tour I enjoy watching and am a fan of. Obviously I need to read more into the logic/reason why he just upped and retired with no hand shake or courtesy.
But as it looks right now, seems like a new low as a player. I sometimes compare these pro athletes to us when things are tough mentally and you’re going through it. That’s understandable.

However the average Joe like me can’t just erupt and quit off the cusp without serious repercussions. Pro athletes worth 10s of millions have that luxury which is not ideal.

Obviously I’ll wait on more details. If there’s more and I didn’t see them, then I’ll have to catch up later.

I mean he seemingly doesn't speak correct Russian anymore. His everyday language is French.

He had a food poisoning. Not everyone with the upset stomach can sh*t as quickly as Iga Swiatek.

It is none of our business. Meddy didn't feel well for some reason and retired.
There is no need to make drama, call MTO and call out a physio when you know that your body cannot continue.
Just retire and be done with it!

Meddy didn't feel well for some reason and retired. Nothing wrong with that.

Sure, there's nothing wrong with not shaking hands with your opponent before retiring. It's not like it's an act of unsportmanship because you can't deal with the loss and congratulate the opponent like a gentleman, right?

Meddy's body felt so bad that he had no time to shake hands with Felix, in spite of the fact that it'd have taken 5 seconds to do so, and yet he did have time to recollect his racquets and material, which needed almost a minute to be executed.

Meddy appeared extremely weak as he packed his bags.
Did Meddy even attend the post-match presser? What was his explanation?

Maybe that explains why he had time to recollect the racquets but not to shake hands with Felix.
Should he leave all his belongings on the court and run away? Should ball boys gather his stuff and bring it to his hotel?

The crowd is paying for an entertainment product so you owe them some kind of explanation even if it’s somewhat manufactured like your fav Egg does. Med probably had to make en emergency #2 which is a do not pass go situation. No time for pleasantries with Mo, FAA or the crowd.

It is not manufactured with either Medvedev or Djokovic.

He seriously just quit the match. No MTO, not even a handshake, lost the first set to FAA and just walked off the court. One of the most surreal retirements I can remember. What amazing “sportsmanship”

Trying to find a full video - here’s one link:

Look at Felix’s face. No MTO called, no trainer, no handshake or acknowledgement of his opponent. He just quits and leaves.
To be fair he was pooping his pants...literally!

Medvedev is the embodiment of the garbage we have had to endure for the past 10 years of the tour . 7 foot tall with less power than a WTA player. Basically just gives up when things don’t go his way. Mental Mug

Exactly.

This is one important reason why Federer was and is loved. He never retired, which of course didnt mean he never was injured. As a player you need to know you are in the entertainment business. If people didnt care to watch you couldt make a living out of it. Seems a lot of players nowadays miss this point. Its expected that you give it all, and dont make tragic statements like for example Monfils did at one of the AO press conferences. At least you have to act like you care about winning.

Federer never retired, but he did walk onto the court for the final of a season ending championship to tell the crowd he wasn't playing because he had more important matches the next week. Switzerland did win that Davis Cup so it may have been worth it...

Er, not quite.
“Unfortunately I’m not match fit to play the match tonight,” the 33-year-old said. “Clearly I wish it wasn’t this way. You try all year to be ready for the ATP World Tour Finals and I didn’t want to end this way. I tried everything I could last night and today – painkillers, rest – until the very end but I can’t compete at this level with Novak. In a final like this and at my age it would be too risky. I hope you understand.”

My understanding is that he came down with some kind of gastric virus mid-match and was very keen to avoid spreading it, hence the rapid exit from the court with maximum social distancing.

Federer still wasn't fit when the DC rolled around, even with the rest. In his first match, he was hammered by Monfils, 6-1 6-4-6-3. Does that score sound like a "My back feels fine!" Federer?

Right right. Does the virus spread by eye contact or saying "sorry bro" to your opponent?

Stop being so willing to accept their reasons. These guys aren't normal people

He congratulated FAA from the distance. If camera didn't show it, it doesn't mean it hasn't happen.

That will be part of his legacy, toughing it out. I was shocked when he retired because I knew it had to be something very serious for him to do that. Plus, he was playing well.

The Djoker was not playing well against Zverev. He was playing through the severe pain of a Grade 2 Hip Adductor tear.

You didn't understand the reference, and that's ok as well as totally unsurprising

I've heard the rumors, but is there a news story backing this up? That's a pretty damning charge.

Wawrinka had a similar thing rumor, but I'm not sure if it was ever confirmed either.

There was a paper trail of DMs and screenshots
