I'd like to see Melzer perform some S&V tonight, in the baseline game he won't win against Federer in the long-run, some nice slice serves to Fed's backhand in the adv-court, could win a LOT of cheap points that way.

Prediction: Fed revolutionizes tennis by incorporating a tweener in his serve.

The sad thing for Melzer is, he won't win against Fed with S&V either.

Melzer didn't play well in their last match (neither did Fed really), but even if he plays his best against Roger in his current form it'll still probably end in straight sets for Rog.

Ditto.

Unless ******** shows up for 2 sets, Melzer is toast. A sub-par Federer just beat Melzer on the grass in 3 easy sets.

Well, if he comes out on fire, he MIGHT catch Federer off-guard and sneak off the first set, if he's lucky, but I can't see him outplaying Federer over the course of a best-of-5 match.

Good lefty practice, though, for Fed (as were Dabul and Beck), for the potential final against you-know-who

While Beck, Dabul and Melzer are all lefties, I don't think any of them play anything like Nadal. Nothing similar in their games to Nadal's other than being left handed.

Feliciano Lopez? Or Verdasco?

Why do they even bother playing?

The only challenge is to figure out how many games Melzer will win. He won't come CLOSE to even winning a set. Should be a nice practice stroll for Fed, with bagels and breadsticks.

lefty slice serve is something that takes time to get used to, and forehand-to-backhand rallies should also be a good practice

There's no practice that will help against Nadal because no one else remotely resembles his play.

Fed has no problems with lefties. Only Nadal.

Has Federer lost a match to a lefty other than Nadal?

I think so but it was before he started his era of dominance... so like 2002 or something was the last time he lost to a lefty who wasn't Nadal.

Since 2003, no. Before that, can't be bothered to check, and it wasn't really Fed before 2003 anyway

So, contrary to popular belief Federer's issues with Nadal have nothing to do with his left-handed play.

Good heavens. Looking at that H2H and the "How Did They Get Here" info in LoveGame's opening post, I can't see ANY way Melzer takes a set off Fed.

We'd better spend our time guessing how many games Melzer might win...hmm. 'Am trying hard not to be too negative here.

On the contrary they have everything to do with it being Nadal + lefty.

Lets just say if Nadal was righty we'd have very different stats.

anyone watched kuzy match today?
I was impressed by that Cibulcova or whatever her name..I think she's gonna beat Wozy

Okay. Jurgen won 8 games off Roger in 3 sets at Wimby.

I think JM's better on hard than he is on grass, plus as Gugafan pointed out, he looked good against JCF in his last match, so

I'll guess Melzer wins 10 games from Federer tonight

Pondering the possibilities, I think 10's the best guess. Maybe 4 in the first and 3 in each thereafter? Poor Melzer. We're already dooming him to the plane ride home.

Fed's getting older, doesn't move quite as well and his overall game is just not what it used to be.
I'll take Fed in 3.

That little three step toebounce bounce every WTA player does before hitting their serve is annoying. It's like "I'm not gonna choke, I'm not gonna choke"

I heard Roger was in the locker room practicing hitting bottles off Paul Annacone's head with his serve.

Melzer, sitting nearby listening to his iPod, isn't amused my sources say.

Frack, last thing we need is this match lasting any longer. The commentator said it best after zvonerva netted another shot to give prtkovic bp, "the agony prolonged"
