Fed chased down a ball in Melzer's last service game that most people wouldn't get to - Fed got to it - AND hit it a crosscourt FH.

I feel bad for those who are too clueless or too bitter to appreciate what he can do on a tennis court.

Match point wasn't shabby either!

Fed's the only player whose shots to ball people are featured on you tube.

geez fed has gotten 4 matches where none of them had any weapons that could hurt him. that part of his draw is over now.

Does anyone have a good guess of when Fed will play Soderling? I have tickets for the morning sessions for Wednesday and Thursday, but I have a feeling it will be a night session on one of those two days.

Thank you.

Good, solid win from Fed tonight.

He ties Connors's record of 26 straight GS QF showings.

Nice way to finish!!
Connors has 27, but he skipped 13 majors during that streak.

Federer-Soderling and Djokovic-Monfils should both be on Wednesday, who's getting the Night Session is anyone's guess.

Didn't like Federer's game today.

He won, but only because of luck and Melzer's going for too much too often and his unability to convert BP opportunities.

Not much net play, for some reason - he falls back to his old-and-proven baseline style whenever it gets tight.

Fed looked like a solid top 20 guy today. This game will not hold up against today's Soderling.

These interviews are really annoying and awkward. Every time the player has to say how awesome the crowd is. Does the crowd there have some self esteem issues and need some encouragement or something?

There is no guess...it's Wednesday night

I'd bet money that Joker v. Monfils will be the day and Fed - Soderling will be the night match. Fed > Joker selling tickets. ESPN would not be amused if the USTA didn't put Fed on the night session. Have fun.

That shot was amazing i loved it, i have seen him do it plenty of times though, he must have his right wrist insured for like a billion dollars for sure

When you see someone do that you know his got talent, everyone else is just a peasant trying to not net the ball too often or look silly

He approached the net 32 times...

Probably Wednesday night session is my guess. Fed's half is alternating every other day with Nadal's half. The only other men's quarters in Fed's half is Monfils-Djokovic...and I think that will be in the day session on Wednesday.

I completely agree. They're just pandering to the crowd so they'll continue to show up. Let's face it, they're paying money to go out in (what was) 90 degree weather and sit amid a bunch of buffoons to see tiny stick-figures 200 yards away hit balls back and forth. The only only only thing that makes it worthwhile is because you're actually in the same "room" as these athletes.. if you think they don't care about you, then that shoots down even that.

someone voted melzer in 3...

fed didn't play well in the second set. however, in this match i noticed that he hit some good backhands (although missed too many), and that is good since he was getting killed for some weak, short, spinny backhands before. his backhand isn't up to the level it was in his prime, but it has improved. although it's still relatively inconsistent

Would some kind Fed fan mind uploading this on youtube and sending me the link? I had to miss it as it shows during working hours for me. Just call it something random and let me know the link so they will not take it down.

I don't understand why people are so whiny. This was a GREAT match from Fed. 41 winners to 27 UEs is a great stat. He also converted 50% of his BPs (a rare stat for Federer) and he was pretty good at the net as well. Yeah, Fed needs to polish his FH just a bit more, and stay focused when he's leading, those are his biggest problems now. Melzer was a tough opponent and with the way he played in this match he'd have probably won a set against any other top player (or even more than a set).

Great match overall.

I watched every point and wasn't impressed. I kept thinking, 'sure, this is enough to beat Melzer in straights, but it won't hold up if he plays Nadal or Soderling.'

Although having said that, Melzer is an unorthodox opponent. He mixes up pace on the serve, lots of variety in his ground game, really take your time away by standing up at the baseline. So I guess it's hard to judge Roger's form against such a tricky opponent.

I agree. 10 times better than the last 3 snoozefests. I want great matches from now on (with hopefully Fed winning them). None of these boring 3 set beatdown crap anymore.
