I just wonder how badly Fed wants to embarass A-Rod..almost makes me feel sorry for the guy. But he just HAD to make that "too big" comment, now I want Roddick to be destroyed with a passion.

I will be rooting for Roddick, because I am a Good American. All Good Americans will be rooting for Roddick, and if you root for Federer, you are a Bad American.

If you are not American at all, then you envy our freedom, and wish you were. God bless the ruler of the free world, George W. Bush.

Go Andy!!!

I must have missed this. When did this comment take place, and why was it oh-so-bad? Roddick says that about his opponents' winners sometimes.

You've put me in an awkward position here. How about us patriots who hate Bush but like Andy?

He (Roddick) hit an ace and then yells out too big, seemingly just to throw Youzhny off his game.

He's not any more cocky than Federer--they just show it differently.

You know before this game I liked Andy. Now. Now I hope Fed makes him cry with shame at how bad he will play.

They cut my coverage off before the return to studio. Can you summarize what was said?
He said Roddick is due for another big title, a win over Federer, and with the confidence he is playing with, and the way he is hitting his serve, forehand, and backhand, he is ready to take out Federer in the final.

Yes America has such a tense relation with the Swiss, I see this as on a par with the 1936 Munich Olympics in terms of nationalism.

I'm an American and I want Roger to beat Andy because he's such a dick esp. in person. I don't think we'll see a total ass whoopping though.

I shouldn't have to, but Fed's never been known for his modesty. He's always been pretty forthright about how awesome he thinks he is. He doesn't show it so much on the court nowadays, but he can "rub it in" sometimes to lesser opponents. (He was getting unnecessarily fancy with Spadea just this tournament on points where Spadea had already tried his best but had to give up.)

I'm not arguing that he is better or worse than Roddick here. It's just unfair to pin "cockiness" on Roddick when Fed's got it in buckets, too. He's just a quieter guy on the court is all. Roddick is usually more self-effacing in casual settings, actually.

I have never seen this behavior in Fed. Andy yes.

After he plays great and wins, what is Federer supposed to say when the interviews asks him how he played? It is a no-win situation for Federer. If he says he played great, he comes across as cocky, albeit true. If he says he played alright, he comes across as faking modesty. To me, it simply says he surprises himself when he steps up in the big moments -- perhaps given his earlier record.

I am cracking up on how some of you say that Roger is not cocky. He is a great player but so arrogant. The most arrogant player I have ever seen. I don't care that he is but weird that some Fed Fans cannot (or wont) see it.

goodness...

it's like some of you wake up mad at Andy Roddick.

Normally something like that would make me smirk, but I can't help but feel a little disturbed on how some of you go about judging people on such insignifcant, puerile actions.

So you say Andy Roddick sucks...I say it sucks to be a hater.

...
No doubt Federer is the man. He's in his prime and has pretty much been untouchble. If Federer executes, then he will win. But in this instance, out of every player on tour right now...Roddick has the best chance of winning this thing. He's playing the best tennis of his career, physically and mentally, on arguably his best surface, and in a stadium where 98% of the crowd will be cheering for him. For those of you hoping that Andy Roddick gets put in his place...don't be mad when he ends up in a place you weren't hoping him to be.

I can not imagine Federer saying anything after a winning shot, much less something like Roddick said. Roger has to much class. As far as rooting for Roddick because he is American, total BS. I root for Federer because I appreciate his talents, I could care less about where he was born, or what country he represents. I do not see Roddick as having any chance in the final, he has not had to play, even a top 10 player, much less the number one guy. Roddick is playing better, but his opponents are making him look better then he is, that will not happen Sunday.

In Peter Bodo's article Cowboy Roddick he claims that people hate Roddick because he is American. There is some song called "Cowboy Logic", I can't remember how it goes but it is something like this:
<snark>
If it's a war, do it. Shove your rifle in to it
'Cause ya know all that blood's gonna wash off in the rain
If it's a horse, yoke it. If it's a chicken, choke it.
As long as it's wrong do it again and again.

That's cowboy logic...

Peter Bodo sez,

"There's generally a lot of anti-Andy sentiment on display at this website, stereotyping Roddick as a kind of uber-fratboy who does nothing but bash the ball. Unfortunately, if his name were, oh, Slobodan "Bobo" Zivojinovic (look him up), you wouldn't hear a peep out of the antis; Bobo was, after all, a European (although it's not like the sophisticated aesthetes of western Europe ever had much use for Yugoslavs/Croats, or other easterners, except as a novelty - regard the half-evolved European)."

"I don't mind, really, hypocrisy being too endemic an impulse to get all worked up about. Besides, Cowboy Logic doesn't really include embracing dictates from any elitist establishment. But I'll put this in a simple way a cowboy would understand: Rankings don't lie. You prefer prancing Gaston or Fernando Gonzalez (thank God he's not a Yank, he'd be cast as the ultimate ugly American!), feel free."

So there, eurotrash! You just hate Andy because of our freedoms </snark>

Thank you for summing it up so nicely. Peter Bodo is also an ignorant clown; he doesn't seem to realize that the term "Ugly American" comes from the 1958 book "The Ugly American" written by two Americans, William J. Lederer And Eugene Burdick. Lederer was a career naval officer who served during World War II with the Pacific fleet, and Burdick was an Iowan who also wrote a popular novel about a nuclear war started by accident. The book was a multi-million-copy bestseller that coined the phrase for tragic American blunders abroad.

Back to tennis...today all I am hoping for is a competitive match, and may the best man win!

Don't include us Brits with the Euro (anti-american haters) I would never ever call myself 'European' eventhough 'they' are doing a good job in the UK with the younger generations. I am old enough to know better.

Go Roddick!

I hate "Cowboy Logic" when it comes to international politics (coughBUSHcough), but I guess I kinda like it on a tennis court sometimes. And besides, Roddick has enough variety of stroke that I don't think he really is all about Cowboy Logic all the time. No one ever believes me on here, but he's definitely gotten better at adapting his game to different players, slowballing and fastballing serves and rally strokes appropriately. In fact, I think that's maybe the biggest improvement in his game the last few years.

Now, he's not gonna be able to out-finesse Fed today, but he'll have to be a Smart Cowboy. Use some variety to keep Fed off balance, but overpower him whenever and wherever the opportunity allows.

i had only seen youzhny play few of times before his semi with Roddick last night. Now i see what is meant about his arm tightening up at crucial times.

He absolutely gave away that break in 1st--3 errors and 1 double fault. and lost the lead in tiebreak. He somehow played like pure garbage in 2nd.
He gave away 3rd tiebreak- missed an easy volley winner (1 of his only missed volleys) , Youzhny ahould have been up 4-0 in tiebreak.

I was picking Roddick before but now am not sure. No way does Federer give away those gifts that Youzhny did in the semis, which he could have won in 3 or 4 sets easily otherwise.

He definitely wasn't playing that tight the past week, but I think the pressure of him being in the final was huge. Everyone EXPECTED him to win. I believe he'll be much more relaxed playing against Fed so the quality of his play should be better hopefully.

Please keep in mind about Youzhny that while Andy was well rested, Youzhny not only beat Rafa in a hard fought game he also won a doubles match on the same day that ended the Bryan bro. hopes.

You think he'll be MORE relaxed against Fed? I mean, he's been there before, so that will help. But I think Roddick's gonna tighten up in places. He always seems to. He's led Fed a number of times in sets that he (roddick) ends up losing.

My only hope is that this time Fed will also tighten up a bit, too. In general I don't like to root for nerves, but I feel like Fed has to be handicapped somewhat against ANYONE to keep matches competitive.

I guess there are different ways to react to it. Fed has owned him in the H2H so he could feel he has nothing to lose. Similar to the way he played hewitt who has also owned him in the H2H. Let's hope the Andy that played Hewitt shows up.
