Men's final going to be interesting

Happy either way so can't lose now. Thiem in final is insurance against zverev disappointing me again.

And there will be some easy puns about it being dominic's "thiem" if zverev loses too

Thiem-Zverev was close at the 2020 AO, Thiem won 36 64 76(3) 76(4).
It is impressive how good Thiem is at tiebreakers, he won 3 tiebreakers in this year's Nadal AO match, and now beat Medvedev with a couple of tiebreakers too.
If Thiem loses this opportunity, it could damage him mentally.

Zverev needs the confidence from something like this. Thiem already has it for the most part imo. Zverev winning is better for the big picture. Then Thiem can have RG since Nadal is semi retired now @jm1980

Thiem isn't good enough to beat Rafa at Roland Garros, so makes no difference what he does.
Rafa has already beaten Thiem FOUR times at Roland Garros, and plenty more to come.
In fact Thiem needed to win THREE tiebreakers just to beat Rafa at the AO this year 76 46 76 76!

Considering this is the furthese Zverev has gone in a slam, and he's worked harder, Thiem should take this. Sad day if he doesn't.
Thiem should be left hungry to chase Rafa
I wonder if Thiem will make the smart decision and skip Rome, or if he'll overplay and then lose to Rafa again in Paris
Thiem has played so much more than anyone else that I don't think surface change means much to him right now. Normally I'd never say that but these are once in a lifetime situations/conditions. I say skip.

Don't speak too soon. Thiem got shafted at RG19 finals by having to play 4 days in a row while Rafa got a day off before the finals, yet Thiem still took a set off Rafa.

1st serve Zverev is better
2nd serve Thiem better

Backhand Zverev
Forehand Thiem

Zverev sucks at net
Thiem sucks at passing shots

Def could be a crazy match
Do we get a Fedal feeling here?
Different styles and strengths. And they are friendly with each other too!
If this rivalry takes off we can focus on something else than the washed up slam race.

I sure hope Thiem’s ankle is not a problem. If it is, they should quickly change all the seat cover banners into a big silhouette of downtown Winston Salem.

Will Thiem slice as much as he did today?

I feel Medvedev plays a similar structure to Zverev, but has been operating at a higher level recently.
But I expect Zverev to serve better than Medvedev did today. Med disappeared a bit on the big points, and Thiem capitalised.

Either that or a 25 double fault day from Zverev puts the result beyond doubt

Thiem tweaked his ankle Zverev played 5 sets.

But match time is only 30 min more

For a big boy Medvedev could really get down easy on that slice it was the short ones that hurt him. The slower courts seemed to help thiem. But definitely not a deciding factor

The slice itself wasn’t often hurting Medvedev, but it definitely bunged up his rhythm.
Med netted quite a few regulation shots when returning the slice, and the balls he was sending back were often very attackable for Thiem.

I was quite shocked at how reluctant Thiem was to hit through the backhand today. Worked out though!

You can't really beat Thiem by simply extending the rally, so I guess it was for the best that Zverev won, he has enough power to at least make Thiem work.
this is important and i think thiem wins. i thought his biggest edge over medvedev was that he showed he wasn't going to miss rally balls and had patience for medvedev's "junk" (not that it's precisely junk, but you know what i mean). once that got taken away and med had to force the issue, he got pulled out of his comfort zone.

Honestly Thiem showed more good form than Novak did pre-default. It's possible Djokovic would've stepped it up but Thiem has been balling. He has no reason to lose this final. Zverev's level has been really bad.

Thiem last night W/UE 22/33...

Nothing special about that.

Djokovic was going to win this tournament.

I think I’d agree that Thiem has been overall better than Djokovic this tournament, but you can’t rule out the mental department. Who knows if he’d screw it up against a player or Djokovic’s caliber.

Though I was impressed by his mental fortitude against Medvedev yesterday...

W/UE is just such an awful stat devoid of context. Medvedev is also extremely challenging to hit winners against from behind the baseline which is Thiem's preferred style. Thiem's level was good last night. He's only dropped 1 set in the tournament. He's playing well.

He had to play from behind twice last night. I don't see any indicator at all that he's played well enough to beat Djokovic. It's wishful thinking and that's that.
