I'm 17 years old. Should I join a tournament in men's open? Or mens 4.0? I want to join this tournament, but there is only 1 player in boys 18. So I am thinking of joining mens open or mens ntrp 4.0

there are 7 players signed up in men's open

& there are 9 players signed up in mens ntrp 4.0

I think my ntrp is around 4.5 btw

If you are under 19 you can't have a rating so you will not be allowed to play 4.0 in a USTA tourney. So you will probably have to play open.

Go for the 4.0, if you really are a 4.5, you should be able to go far or win it. Mens open you have a good chance in getting crushed the first round. GL.

being 17 and if the tournament is a sanctioned USTA event then the TD can not allow you to play NTRP levels until the year you turn 19, otherwise they risk being fined by the USTA and their Section/District.

I look at tourneys as both a proving ground, and a place to see what I need to do to get to the next level. Time/money permitting I agree with folks that suggested both... but if I had to choose one (which often I do, due to time commitments), I'd go with the Open. Even when I bomb out first round, it is extremely motivating/educational to me, and gives me an idea of where I need to go (eg. what do I need to practice, what goals should I be setting, what strategies am i missing, etc...).

I've found that since everyone plays "up" for tournaments anyway, you'll find good 3.5's winning 4.0 tourneys, and you'll get a bit of everything in the Open's. I've played the range from 3.0 to former Davis Cup/low ranked ATP player. Mostly, though I've found the Open's to be college kids trying to stay sharp in the off season - usually >D2 level, or high ranked D3 schools.

my $0.02.
