Mensik cold handshake with Perricard

Dude is more than a serve-bot. That one-handed backhand is lethal. He drives straight through that one-hander. He should give some lessons on that shot to Tsitsipas.

Mensik faces off against GMP again in Doubles SF.
Assuming he has a decent touch at the net, a guy that size should dominate in Doubles.

He has one of the worst backhands and one of the worst returns on tour. A few power drive backhands (and you can hit a one-handed harder than you can hit a two-hander) doesn’t change that.

Yes, that was a drive-by handshake for sure. Didn’t expect to see that from Mensik o_O I didn’t see the match….. was there anything precipitating this that might explain it?

I was also kinda surprised to see such a cold handshake. Something must have happened that the highlights don’t show. Mensik usually seems pretty even keeled.

GMP’s game is improving before our very eyes. I remember a few months ago- his baseline game was pretty weak, he was getting pushed around the court, rarely came to the net. All of that is changing, it seems. I’ve been pretty impressed.

Maybe his mind was shattered from the onslaught of monster serves off both deliveries. Wouldn't be the first time a player has been vexed after suffering a serving clinic.

I did see a comment about something going down in their 2023 challenger match which GMP narrowly won, maybe some historical beef, but that would be pretty lame to continuously hold a grudge over that.

Kids. No control lol

I don't know, man. I teach kids to play tennis, and I see how hard it is for some to control emotions. Tennis wise, it's more important to control emotions during the match than after it. I don't subscribe to this "demand" for everyone to act like they are happy seconds after a loss. It's very fake, and I think a neutral handshake is 100% OK.

There's also the context, of course. And sometimes players have a history of "something" we're not aware of.

I miss the quick old nod and handshake.
It's ok to be annoyed after a close loss, no one should "demand" a fake smile from anyone IMO.
I agree with this, but it's not even a handshake if the person doesn't look you in the eye briefly. No "fake smile" is required. No contrived warm words are necessary if they don't represent genuine feelings. No hearty pat on the back or the torso has to be part of the ritual. But sticking your hand out sideways for a passing touch while you continue to look and walk forward is not a handshake. It's petulant and unsportsmanlike.

I agree.

I like a cold handshake. It’s a formality. Sometimes just a normal one is considered cold. People arent happy unless there’s smiles, hugs, kisses, tears. Most of that is fake. Cold handshake is just cool, we finished the match, didn’t enjoy it much but whatever, see ya.

Because of a few guys that started it everyone expects the winner will give the loser a belly rub or a peck on the cheek at the net but Mensik wasn’t into it. On the WTA Tour you’re lucky if you get any part of a handshake.

Yes, you are among the few people analyzing this issue cleverly here.
Also I add that it's good that men don't kiss each other after the match, same as some WTA players do.

I’m not judging what players do or don’t do to comfort their losing opponents. Maybe I would like a little belly rub if I lost that match. :) Mensik wasn’t into it and GMP’s expectations were too high. Mensik just wanted to leave.

OK, it's a plus not being judgmental.

GMP and Mensik had another chance to kiss and makeup as they played each other in the Brisbane doubles semi final also :happydevil:

That Dimitrov and Monfils moment is an all-time classic.

GMP shanked most of his returns short, so Mensik had to spend half the match running up to net and hitting awkward balls. Sometimes, GMP would pass him and Mensik would eyeroll. No rhythm.

Or maybe Mensik doesn't like Black people. I don't know. It could be anything.

I didn't want to go here but I'm sorta glad you did

It's not like Eastern Europe is a progressive place. Nobody enjoys losing but if you're losing to someone who you don't necessarily view as an equal it can be even more annoying

Not saying that's the reason but it could be a factor for sure

Who won the doubles?
GMP and Jarry got thrashed by Lehecka and Jakob Mensik in the SF. I didn’t see the handshake though :-D

GMP was running on fumes by the end of the match after a massive week in the singles and doubles and didn’t really have much left for the dubbs SF.
