I almost felt bad for the guy, but he was such an arrogant nitwit that I think that loss was some sort of divine retribution, some great karmic inbalance being restored. And I'm an atheist.

Tursunov: Would be unbeaten vs. Federer with mental strength.

Falla: Would have beaten Federer multiple times with mental strength.

Monfils finals record is worse then Benneteau to me because he was the favourite for most of those. Thomas Berdych has only won 9 titles after winning a masters at 18, with his talent he should have won double that.

Nicolas Almagro. Has all the talent in the world but makes the most baffling shot selection on important points. He's something like 1-30 against Nadal and Ferrer, even though he's been in winning positions against them many times. I will never forget the AO QF a couple years ago where he served for the match about 5 different times against Ferrer and still managed to lose.

Let's not exagerate. He was 20 when he won his first and only masters title in 2005.

But overall I agree. He should have more than 9 titles to his name. But he only has himself to blame for losing to guys like Carlos Berlocq in finals, especially after bagelling him in the first set.

Thanks for correcting me I didn't follow tennis closely back then.

I can't believe we are 12 posts in and no mention of Paul-Henri Mathieu. His Davis cup decider is the stuff of choking legend.

His career started with the choke (Roland Garros, 2004, he was serving for the match against Guga in the fifth set, but choked) and will probably retire after a famous choke.

Like Marat Safin, Goran Ivanisevic was volatile and could go off at any moment.

People calling players who have won Slam(s), Masters and reached multiple SFs/QFs in these tournaments metally weak.

I've seen it all now (or maybe not, yet...).

Believe it or not, but before the 2004 French Open final, Coria had a reputation of being mentally tough. His 2004 Miami run was unbelievable in how he came back from the dead in some matches, particularly in his semi final against Gonzalez.

Even a yips ridden Coria was able to beat Mathieu at 2006 Monte Carlo, from 1-6, 1-5 down.

You do know that Puerta failed a drug test after that very match?
Puerta robbed Davydenko of a slam final appearance. At least we would have had a fair final with both players clean, had Davy been in the final instead of doping Puerta

I know that, but common losing 10 finals hmm.. i guess is tough live with that fact

Yeah but Benneteau already rather overachieved with 10 ATP finals and winning a Slam in double, plus reaching #25 in singles...nothing to be ashamed off, he was never meant to be top 5

lol that's a verrrrryyyy strong assumption...

Nadal broke up on the tennis scene by physically grinding and outlasting all the doped Argentinians clay specialists of the time (Puerta, Chela, Coria etc)...by drinking only water of course !!

I'll throw Monfils in there, though I'm not sure if he's mentally weak or just apathetic.

what about Fognini? he is same build as kei and probably more talented and has a a lot of zip off his shots for a short backswing. But he acts like a child

i must point i was refering to Rios vs Korda, and not about whatever people digressed to (apparently Puerta vs Nadal it seems)

I never thought Benneteau was weak mentally, Ok he was in the Wimbledon match against Federer but how many players would collapse against Federer at Wimbledon? I guess many.

Benneteau was terribly unlucky against Sousa when he had a championship point but when you watch that point he took his chance, went to the net and Sousa hit a fantastic passing shot, nothing Benneteau could do.

Benneteau lost recent finals to Monaco (was top 20 back then) , Del Potro, Nishikori...

Korda's failed drug test was against Henman, after their quarter final match at 1998 Wimbledon. Puerta failed a drug test after the 2005 French Open final against Nadal.

Well, that's when they caught him, same as Puerta and everybody else who has failed a test. I'm not sure we can really say they were clean before. Or after, for that matter.

Agassi never failed a test to our knowledge... until we learnt about it through his bio.

I was just pointing out when the tests were failed.

Another thing. Rusedski was later cleared of what, on paper, looks little different to Korda's offence, except that it happened at a later time, when many players had failed tests because of too much nandrolone.

Yea thats pretty shocking as well. The guy is like 2-6 in slam finals and gets served bagels in must win sets

Murray only has five bagels in must win sets, with three of them coming from when has still a teenager. In fact this is the first bagel in a must-win set since 2007.

2015 AO F vs Djokovic: 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 3-6, 0-6
2007 Miami SF vs Djokovic: 1-6, 0-6
2006 Paris Masters R16 vs Dominik Hrbaty: 6-7(6), 0-6
2006 USO 4R vs Davydenko: 1-6, 7-5, 3-6, 0-6
2005 USO 2R vs Arnaud Clement: 2-6, 6-7(2), 6-2, 7-6(4), 0-6

This isn't too bad. Sampras has three:

2000 Masters Cup vs Hewitt: 5-7, 0-6
1990 Sydney QF vs Wilander: 7-6, 5-7, 0-6
1989 Los Angeles R32 vs Michael Chang: 6-7, 0-6

Oh! Then it's ok. He's very strong mentally. We see it all the time. Right up there with Federer, Nadal and Nole. That's why they're called the big 4 :p

I am a huge Murray fan and have no problem conceding he would benefit from having more mental strength.

I honestly don't think you can put any of the top 100 in the "mentally weakest" category. Do have any idea how hard it is at the level?

again. i was not talking about Nadal or Puerta. i was talking about Korda, who was the victor of the 1998 AO under the influence of performance enhancing drugs that were detected in the control of said substances a mere couple of months later in the quarter final match of the Wimbledon 1998.

The non pros. They only play tennis casually, cuz they don't have the toughness to make it.

I wouldn't call anyone that becomes a pro mentally weak.

Considering talent and opportunity?

Safin. Marat Safin.

After that there's a heap of junior prodigies that flopped.

Current era it's got to be Murray. Again, most of the Finals he's gotten to were through lesser players. Sure he's not at the very top level but he's had the capacity and 2-6 in Finals is bad.

There's no proof regarding the 1998 Australian Open. If there had been, he would have been stripped of the title.

I think Rios,Nalbandian,Mecir are also very weak.

They are much more naturally talented tham Gaudio or Moya.

To think that Moya,Johansson.Gaudio have GS ,but those 3 dont is very sad.
But life isnt fair always.
