MG Prestige Pro/Mp vs Vantage 95

crash

Rookie
I'm currently playing with a Head PC600 but I want to change to a slightly larger headsize to get more forgiveness and a little more power and spin.

I think my first choice would be a MG Prestige Pro or maybe a MG Prestige MP but now the vantage sale has got me wondering about a vantage 95 (63 RA, undecided about the string pattern).

What do you guys think ? Are the Vantage racquets as solid as the Prestige, how do they compare in feel, power, spin ?

I had the Vantage 95, 63 RA, 18x20 string pattern. I basically tried to make a prestige out of it. It was a nice racquet. Really soft, forgiving, and easier than the Prestige. It doesn't have as much of a plush feel as the microgel prestige. I haven't hit with a PC600 very much, so I can't really compare it.

Thanks for the reply. Could you describe that "plush feel" and which microgel prestige are you talking about ? How did your vantage perform in spin potential compared to the prestige ?

I understand you don't use your vantage anymore, why did you switch ?

The plush feel is kind of hard for me to describe, but I'll try. Since the prestiges have a flex of 63, and strung right below mid-tension for me, when I hit through the ball, it feels like the ball is being pushed. It feels like the ball stays on the strings a bit longer. I've hit with all three microgels and personally preferred the mid. The MP is more forgiving than the mid, and can generate a bit more spin as well.

As for the vantage, spin generation would be about the same as the MP. I generally don't hit with massive top spin, so I can't really say for sure, but for me, it felt about the same in terms of spin generation.

I switched away from the vantage to a Volkl. I found that the C10 Pro was more forgiving than the prestige and I enjoyed the flex in the upper hoop. The flex gives me better control on my volleys. The larger headsize also helped when I played for long periods of time. I'm a S&V type player, and the C10 had more to offer me in that area, so I went with it. Plus the Volkl feel is definitely unique.

Hope this helps.

I have a different opinion than furyoku_tennis.

I used own both the MGPro n MGMP n I totally agree with the TW reviews that the MG Prestiges are not silky smooth. Neither the a Pro or MP have good plow through n did not have as comfortable a feel as I thought they would have. The MP suffers from a lack of heft, the Pro was inaccurate n neither felt right.

I have never tried the Prestige classic 600 but I found the Vantage to be the most comfortable n plush feeling racquet that I have ever used.

The stiffness of the Vantage is about the same as the PC600 n you could go a head size up to 95. The PC600 as with all head frames is slightly smaller & may be 88.5 sq in.

Based on the specs of the PC 600, I think that a spec of this vantage in a slightly larger head size will be something like this:

95sq
18x20
63ra
27"
330g 11.7oz
305mm

As the headsize is slightly larger, the balance needs to be shifted higher so that the swing weight is similar to the head PC600.

sorry man, but racquets are not inaccurate...

what do you guys mean by inaccurate. i'm not sure i follow.

It really depends from player to player. Some guys love the MGPro others found that they could not play well with the frame.

I found that I was not able to play well with the frame at all. It was hit or miss for this frame.

The tw reviews also mentioned that some of them found the frame erratic.

http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/Reviews/MGPP/MGPPReview.html

"I enjoyed the weight of the Pro, but the control wasn't as dialed in as the 18/20 Midplus when hitting from the baseline, as the open string pattern seemed slightly more erratic." Granville

Spencer "Other than the grip shape, at times it seemed too erratic or less consistent than its 18/20 counterpart."

lmao at your excerpts trying to prove your point-i can do that all day long-watch:

the racquet from the baseline impressed Danny enough to contemplate switching. "The MicroGEL Prestige Pro was by far the best model for me from the baseline. The amount of power, spin, consistency and feel was to my liking

Chris. "I felt comfortable with this racquet from the first hit. I had good depth and directional control on all my shots

my point is, the racquet will send the ball only where you direct it to--accuracy is not in the racquet, its in the player

LOL!

Just cus you like the frame doesn't mean eveyone else does. If you can't accept what I n some of the TW members have said, then you're in your own little world.

How can it be accurate yet erratic? One moment hitting well, the next moment balls spraying all over?

That's not accurate, that's just erratic.

mawashi

i guess what i'm trying to say is that the control is there, but the power is erratic. so when the power is stable the control is all good, but when it's not, then it's the most erratic racquet i've ever used. some days i just can't hit with it, others i hit really well with it. my other racquets don't seem to do that whether i'm on a good day or a bad. sorry for my confusing word choice.

Nothing wrong with your words, I too can't articulate well enough to describe what I feel with the frame. That is why I just said inaccurate or erratic.

I suppose that like you I too found the Pro a difficult frame to play with. The best way for me to explain would be a lack of consistency.

With my Yonexs, Vantages, AK90 I know when I have hit a bad shot cus I can feel it on the string bed n I know as well that when I have hit well on it cus the ball goes where I want it to go.

With the Pro the feeling is just off, I think I hit well with the shot base on how I feel the ball on the string bed but the ball goes off in some other direction. The MGMP was more consistent for me in that regard.

Hope that you understand what I mean?

mawashi

I get what you mean. The MGMP was definitely better, but the Mid was the best IMO.

I was fortunate over the weekend to hit about with roundiesee with his Prestige classic n that was a fantastic racquet.

I started to find my rhythm even from the first hit n if not for the overly tight string tension n syn gut, I found the frame very enjoyable.

However, in terms of which frames I prefer in similar head size, feel, n playability it would be in this order:

AK90, Prestige classic mid, KBT, MGMid. However, having hit with all of them I must confess that somehow I still prefer my custom Vantage 95 : P

mawashi

It's

95sq in
27"
325g unstrung (added lead myself)
63ra
16x19
305mm

It is less powerful than the AK90 but man is it comfortable n gives very decent plow through n great control.

roundiesee hit with the vantage also so perhaps you can mail him for his opinion of the frame. From his remarks while we were playing around he said it was very comfortable.

If I had to do it again I would chose these specs:

95sq in
27"
330g unstrung
63ra
16x19
305mm

Call Paul directly

I asked Paul to build me a pair that that would be identical but play somewhere between a Pro-Staff 95 and the extended prestige. he built a 95" 16x19 63 27.5 - D-grip. on the 11.4 9hl frame - then he added lead under the grommits. i haven't looked since they were shipped but there was some build-up between 1 to 3 o'clock - parts of lead overlapping near 3 and a small gap near 2.. not sure what he did under the grip. I am not that knowledgeable about specs but he did what I asked. Their weight and balance is idenical. And Paul shipped them within a week.

While I have steadily improved my humble game - I'd say the sticks play better than I do. but for that matter, A friend of mine, a teaching pro who normally uses prestiges, was caught short without back-up racquets and borrowed these. He played in a Northeast USTA open and broke his strings and had to play with mine in the finals.. he won. He would have only changed to a 18x20 string pattern. I plan to order two more in the spring when I can catch up with Paul.

I don't exactly understand that last sentence ... needs to be shifted higher? Don't you mean to say that the headlightness needs to be increased, because you mentioned a 305mm balance point above with the specs (while the Head PC600 has a higher 310mm balance point)?

Do you compensate the maneuverability this way because a larger headsize (90" vs 95") is less maneuverable?
