MgR/I Optimization Analysis for TW Playtester Chris

That's some pretty scientific logic broseph.

Well you got personal and that's no longer a tennis conversation...anyway, let's forget this, everyone present here loves tennis, loves to play with a good racquet, wants to play the best tennis possible and improve as much s apossible, we like to share experience as well, we're all here completely on the same side.

I like the Tecnifibre 315 DC racket better than the 315 Dynacore because it moves faster through the ball. and if you look at the Tecnifibre 315 (limited) thread you will see almost everyone says you need to add some mass to the head and it will come alive. Well here is some data on those three frames:

Racket mass balance SW MgR/1
Tecnifibre 315 DC weight 331.69 g, balance 32 cm, SW 310, and MgR/I of 21.27752473
Tecnifibre 315 Dynacire weight 331.69 g, balance 32 cm, SW 311, MgR/I of 21.23411118

The DC seems faster than the Dynacore because the MgR/I is higher. The Limited comes alive because the MgR/I is way too high, adding mass to the head of the racket bring the MgR/I down. Seems like on one side of the MgR/I argument everyone says it does not work for them, but then on the other side they really think it does. Maybe 21 is not your magic number but there is some mathematical data to back up the argument that it really does work.

Chris' comment on the 315 Limited 16M:

He explained, "From the first hit I noticed the livelier feel of this version of the TFight 315 Ltd. The ball came off the stringbed with added zip, and I noticed more hop on topspin shots. From what I see, they do it by trial and error and it looks to be a pretty tedious process.
Fair assessment but look at this way, you seem to like a heavy racket of 376 g and a balance of 32.8. Any racket you hold steady in your hand that weighs 376 g and has a balance of 32.8 cm will feel the same. You will only notice a difference in when you swing the racket. If you add mass at 7" the racket will get heavier the more weight you add and will feel heavier in your hand. Also the SW will go up with every gram you add. But with if you your original intent was to modify your racket so it weighed 376 g, and a balance of 32.8 cm, and an Mgr/I of 21? Well for one thing the racket will swing faster because the only way for you to get an MgR/I of 21 with your weight and balance specs is to have a SW of 366 which is 20 points lower than what you have now. So if your original intent was to modify your racket to 376 g, 32.8 cm, and SW of 366 you would never have to add weight at 7" to get the MgR/I you want.

EDIT: Let's say I wanted to modify my Tecnifibre 315 DC racket to 350 g, 31,5 cm, and an MgR/I of 21. All I need to do is add weight to get 350 g, 31.5 cm and SW of 328 which is something until now I just lucked up on now I know how to calculate it without ever adding a gram to the 7" point which is something I will never do.

I really don't want to modify my racquets. I tried that out with my previous racquets and it took about three months to get in the ballpark of what I wanted and I was never able to get the three racquets to feel really close to each other. It's a lot easier to by part of a matched set. If you do go to change something, that means replacing grommets and, perhaps, digging out silicone and you have some loss of QC on the process because the grommets that you buy today might not be the same or similar weight to the ones that Head installed many years ago. This would mean taking it to a place with an RDC machine (none in my state to my knowledge). So considerable work, effort and expense to make changes to these things.

It would probably be easier to start from scratch with new frames. But it's not clear to me that I want to go through this process at this time.

If you consider the amount of effort Berdych put in to go from Dunlop to Head, and the effort that Sharapova put in to go from Prince to Head and Federer's effort to go from 90 to 97 - I'd say that it is a pretty tedious process. I don't think that they'd consider it fun given that they probably lost a number of matches due to the needing to change the muscle-memory when you hit the ball. Federer certainly had a difficult time of it in terms of match results.

I'd state that these three at least are already pretty good at tennis so you're taking out that variable.

True but if you consider risk and reward I think you'll find Federer thinks the reward was worth all the problems.

This formula does not cut that process out. The same guys are still tweaking their frames - years later.

A tennis swing is an evolving movement as well.

Yeah, I know. But a tweak is a lot easier to absorb than going from 90 -> 97 or trying a different layup.

I would rather focus on improving my fitness and my game than doing the equipment stuff, especially if the equipment is already pretty good.

I'm not adding any more weight to my current frames, that's for sure.
 
Yes but modifying a racket is not a tedious process and if you have sound knowledge of what you're trying to get it's actually pretty easy.

As I wrote, I went through the process. Modifying it a little, hitting with it for a week or two, making more modifications, etc. In the end, I had a ballpark of what I wanted and that was useful but it isn't fun hitting with what amounts to a different racquet every week.

If you know what you want and can go straight there, then that's easier.

But I'd rather just pay someone to build me frames or sell a set of matching Pro Stocks to me, then actually doing the tinkering myself.

So Andy tests racquets for like 3-4+ hours and they(P1) are like, "Ok so Andy likes PTB11 but wants it more comfortable so we give him PTB11.9983737333473. So yeah. Pros typically spend hours testing racquets. If I were P1, I'd fine out MSW(in my definition MaxSwingWeight is a SW you can use with maximum RHS for extended periods of time) and preferred balance and work from there. No comfortable? Add weight at 7" mark. and then when Andy is like, "YAY I CAN LOSE TO FED IN WTF 60 61!" Then P1's job is finished and they have coffee.

I think that they try different layups and then work to find the specs and strings that work best. That is a lot of variables to work through. I've seen enough Sharapova Experimental Head Blackout frames to get the feeling that it's not a fun transition. And I don't think that it just takes a few hours.

Those formulas can give you a direction and speed up the process of finding your perfect custom setup on any platform, because calculations take into account what's already present on a stock racquet, and we're talking here about pretty different mass distributions present on stock racquet, which require different customization to get the custom setup to where you want it.

So perhaps pro guys have the experience to get things about right just using the specs, and with trial and error or whatever they do to get them right. But you can't expect rec players to have this level of experience. These formulas help us a lot. Now, whether they could even help pro customizers - I really wouldn't know because I've no knowledge how they actually work and would they have some use from it, or they have enough experience so it wouldn't speed up things for them at all. But actually this is really not my concern. I'm interested only in what guys like us can do, guys that wouldn't pay to a pro customizer to get their sticks customized and matched, yet we still like to play with the best setup possible for us.

I know this subject of MgR/I helped me open up for me the perspective of importance of mass distribution balance to get the racquet swing easy, still and even. Perhaps if I had the opportunity to learn the other way how to get the job done, I would have done it the different way. But this is what opened up for me and all I can say is - this is a valid way, a really good approach to customize. And there's no other way for anyone to test this or be assured of this...unless he tries himself.

And as for tweaking and evolvement of swing I agree...but using formulas to help you customize is not an obstacle. It's not a solution, it's just a tool.

Sorry, meant few hours perday for a couple of weeks.

I don't think they would switch layup that much. Cause the layup determines the feel and flex of a racquet right?

Layup would be a gross change. You can find McEnroe trying a bunch of different Head frames types and settling on the Radical.

Adding a 1/2 gram of lead here or there would be a fine change.

I can only use the specs reported on the website. So differences between those specs and Chris's actual racquet used can be regarded as a source of measurement error.

This creates noise in the data, that tends to obscure real trends, but the stronger trends should still be visible through the noise.

That is why I have only reported results when the trend is obvious and very statistically significant.
Much of the analysis led to noisy inconclusive results - I didn't post any of those results, since they are not interesting.
You should post all results because statistical tests can produce false positives by chance. If you performed many tests and got many insignificant results, your significant results may not be valid.

I have posted standard errors (approximately 90% confidence intervals). This way, you can decide for yourself whether you deem the results significant or not.
 
Could have done this for Andy and/or Michelle, who are far superior players.

So does layup change feel?

You have flex in three possible dimensions (3D, right?). RA measures only one of them, and even that one in static conditions (not the same as dynamic conditions, also from the wrong end of a racquet. Besides, you have torsional flex as well. It's layup composition (graphite layer particles orientation of each specific layer/prepreg in a layup composition) that determines each flex, given a specific (geometry) design.

Besides you have an option of designing a different flex in different portions of the hoop and in the throat, which again creates a different racquet.

What do you think, does all this affect feel?

Your results are significant by the definition of statistical significance. But without context statistical significance doesn't mean anything. For instance, I can find statistically significant results in random data if I write a few lines of code to search for them. I'm not saying your results aren't valid, but unless you disclose all your work, there's no way of knowing.
 
Chris was a playtester for 67 of the racquets that currently appear on the Tennis Warehouse site with individual playtest scores.

I analyzed his component rating scores and observed the correlations between his preferences and various racquet parameters. For Chris, Control, Touch, and Volley scores showed an identical trend with respect to MgR/I value, with a distinct optimum value at about 21.0. The combined average trend is shown here - error bars represent standard error. The second chart shows the trend for topspin, which - for Chris - is essentially the reverse of the trends for control:





For background, a racquet's MgR/I gives a relative measure of a racquet's angular acceleration about the wrist access, assuming a double pendulum swing model. Tuning the MgR/I value to match the timing of player's natural swing (so that the player can relax the wrist through the hitting zone without needing to apply any torque from the wrist muscles) gives enhanced control.

M = mass in kg.
g = 980.5 cm/s^2
R = distance from butt end to balance point in cm
I = Swingweight moment of inertia about butt end of racquet.

For groundstrokes and returns, Chris was very sensitive to a racquet's MR^2 value. Every single racquet that Chris rated highly was clustered in a narrow apparent optimal range with MR^2 value near the low 350s:
Travlerajm, I want to thank you for all this work and research. I have said before and will say it again, I don't believe in mgr/i but you do, and the analysis you bring are always interesting and I always enjoy reading them.

In this post you brought up Andy test numbers, it's all good but it definetely is not scientific in any way. I asume this was done over the course of many months or years and even though I believe Andy to be as reliable a tester as anyone can be, he still rates frames based on his feeling on that day with that frame. To take this and turn it into anything should be considered as a fun exercise and not much more.

The scale you used make it seem like mgr/i=21 is much higher rated than other mgr/i numbers but the scale goes from 7.8 to 8.8 which might look mighty impressive on a exploded scale but in reality only a few .1s separates the "worst" from the "best" rated frames.

But let's assume for a moment that Andy's rating system is absolutely precise and can be taken to the bank. It only means that Andy prefers a depolarized frame. And it's all good because these frames feel good, especially for control, touch and volley... all things Andy probably likes in a frame hence the bigger scores.

Now if your tester was Nadal or Thiem, the conclusion would be that a low mgr/i is better because these guys play the best players in the world with low mgr/i frames and it seems to be working for them as they are top10 players in the world. Low mgr/i as you pointed out works great for spin, but also for power. Which is something these guys seem to prefer.

Regarding the MR^2, it really looks like Andy has a soft spot for 350. Or at least, one of the frame in that zone was really highly ranked.

Keep up the good work, as I said I really like your work even though I don't personnally believe in the magic 21 number. Your threads are always a fun read for me. :cool:

What I miss personally in this graph is frequency within each range of MgR/I used for graph. I'd like to know a distribution.

My 'secret' opinion is that good MgR/I spots are possibly organized in a certain quantum principle, with one around 21 being one of them, but not the only one. After all even travelerjam found another MgR/I value which was interesting for him as he initially played well with it - there's a thread on it, it was something around 20.15? Eventually he gave up this setup because he couldn't completely adjust, but it was promising...

What's the important: knowing that by changing MgR/I you can improve your setup or make it worse. And, according to my experience, close but not accurate values to what suit your game, may make your game off. MgR/I different by 0.1 from your personal good value, whatever it is, may be off too much for you, so it's really worth to fine tune it on court.

I don't follow. If off-the-shelf frames are 20.7, and the optimal is 21, what is the point of customization? I thought 21 was some magic value which you discovered is the best, and stock frames need to be modified to achieve this. If is already 21, why bother?
There is a big difference in performance between a frame with optimized mgr/I and one that has mgr/I value merely 0.1 away from the optimum. Assuming that 21.0 is the optimum for a given player, then you would need to add a whole lot of lead tape to the handle to convert a typical (20.7) stock racquet into an 'optimized' one.

I think you can find all the rackets with reviews on http://www.racquetfinder.com. Then search for any cached pages, on google, of the reviews that have been removed.
 
Don't know if you noticed I posted an mgr/I frequency chart for the subset of frames included in the Chris mgr/I analysis.

I saw it, then forgot you put it. MgR/I ranges aren't completely the same as on grade-to-mgri chart though, but ok enough.
 
Interesting that the subset reviewed recently by Chris has a lower average mgr/I value than the larger group of racquets I looked at 2 years ago. Don't know if this is because Chris selectively chooses certain types of racquets to review, or if the average value for racquets on the market has trended downward recently.

Maybe that's the process @movdga was talking about when he said it was just too complicated. Assume you have a racket you like and the balance on 32 cm but you want to raise the SW up from 301 to 320. That's pretty easy add 5.85 grams to 12 o'clock and you're up to 320. But that weight raised your balance point up but it's easy enough to add the mass you need in the butt to drop the balance down to 32 cm. But if you have 2 or more racket and the specs start out close but not the same getting them all to the same mass, balance and SW becomes a little more involved but not too difficult. There are apps that will tell you what mass to put where to do that. Then you want to jack up the MgR/I from 20.7 to 21.00. What's going to happen to the overall balance? It's going down and to get it back you must increase the SW which throws off your MgR/I all over again. Yeah I think the process could be easier. Did you choose Chris because he was the only playtester with available data, or did you choose him because you couldn't get significant results with other testers? Also breaking continuous data (in this case the MGR/Is) into categories isn't good statistical practice. A better way is to decide what an optimal MGR/I is ahead of time and then compute for each data point the magnitude of the difference between the actual and optimal MGR/Is. Then regress that magnitude on the review score and check the coefficient for significance. Finally, you need to control for other variables in your regression (e.g. weight, balance, swingweight, etc.), or you can't tell whether it's another variable correlated with MGR/I that's actually affecting the reviews. As it stands now, your results are intriguing, but until you do a more robust study, you can't claim anything about MGR/I affecting performance.

A better way is to decide what an optimal MGR/I is ahead of time and then compute for each data point the magnitude of the difference between the actual and optimal MGR/Is. Then regress that magnitude on the review score and check the coefficient for significance. Finally, you need to control for other variables in your regression (e.g. weight, balance, swingweight, etc.), or you can't tell whether it's another variable correlated with MGR/I that's actually affecting the reviews. As it stands now, your results are intriguing, but until you do a more robust study, you can't claim anything about MGR/I affecting performance.

I actually believe the reason why Chris rates racquets with high mgr/I better for control on volleys and touch shots is more a result of less polarized frames having shorter dwell time, which improves control. It's probably the same reason Chris prefers low mgr/I frames for spin, since more polarized frames have more dwell time, which increases spin.

I have not posted any results for Chris's groundstrokes or return score, which tend to be more indicative of an optimum mgr/I value. In general, the only racquets that Chris really really liked for groundstrokes and returns had mgr/I value of about 20.65, but since the statistics for this are thin, I didn't bother to post the chart.

The racquets that I use are better for groundstrokes than they are for serves and volleys (formula comes in around 20.3). I'm an all-court player but lately find myself playing a lot more from the baseline with a topspin game and coming into the net when I have to or on weak shots. I wouldn't say that it's bad for volleying or serving but I have to take speed off the ball a lot on volleys. That's not necessarily bad because I'm pretty selective on coming in and usually wind up with relatively easy volleys.

A polarized frame is a frame that has more mass concentrated to the tip and But than in the center. To some degree all tennis frames are polarized and the more weight you add to the ends the more polar it becomes. The more mass you add to the balance point the less polar it becomes. A polarized frame is a frame with higher Recoil Wieght. The higher the RW the more polar it is.
