Why shouldn't I believe? This is his worst hard court and he can still win it. Only fast hard courts for rest of season. We know how he does there. :)
The Canadian Open aren't very fast, UO aren't really fast, he always struggles in Shanghai (had to defend six MPs against Mayer in 14, lost to Ramos-Vinolas in 15), didn't perform well in Paris in the past.

He's a lock for Cincy, but the rest? Absolutely open to early losses.

We will see. :) I have faith. 2017 is the year of Zen Roger.

The thing is Miami is a gazillion times slower than every other hard court tournament out there.

I'm not exactly entertaining the idea that he gets back to #1 yet either, but that looks like a glass half empty approach to me. I expect he'll do well at both Wimbledon and the USO. Maybe a W in Halle and Basel. As you say, a very good chance at Cincy, and QF/SF results at the other HC Masters, plus a good result at the WTF's and he might be in with a shot. We'll see how it goes and obviously I'm assuming good health, but if no dominant force rises very soon (aka Djokovic or Murray, or Nadal on clay) you won't need as many points to get to #1.

Ratings for 2017 probably slightly different, but it's only good as a guideline... it's pretty much agreed that Miami plays slower than IW overall even though it has a higher court pace rating. What strikes me is that we have 3 slow Masters tournaments and 0 fast ones.

Check out the following post from Tornes.

The problem with "Court Pace Index" (beside that other factors like air, elevation, humidity are equally important for defining "playing condition") is thet they put together two different thing and make it just one. They use speed and bounce and put it togather. So two courts with exactly same CPI could play (and play) totally different and "fast" (high speed, higher bounce) is not the same as "fast" (lower speed, low bounce).

Fed was mentally and physically tired by the end of the match today. I suspect part of him wanted to lose since he can't possibly hit through Nick or Nadal on this slow, slow surface. And he knows it. Miami's court produces incredibly tedious tennis. Roger can't play beautifully on this "clay" HC.

Unfortunately you are right here, but he should be able to go through Nick.

Novak and Andy will come back and they can totally beat this new form of Fed's game.

When was the last time Andy Murray beat Fed? Wasn't it 4 years ago? Last time I checked, Roger has beaten Murray the last five times they've played. Despite the fact Murray is 5 years younger.

Murray couldn't beat the 2014-2016 Fed, he's sure not touching the Fed we saw in Australia or IW.

Don't get me wrong.
It would be amazing and I would be super happy, but I just don't see it happen.

Andy hasn't beaten the old form of Fed's game in forever, but you confidently expect he will suddenly beat this new form?

Yet you keep posting that you think Fed could win the FO? So which is it?

If Federer doesn't win Miami and Nadal does or Kyrgios/Zverev does, so what? Federer should rest until Wimbledon where he may have a realistic chance if he can keep this form up.

@TheMaestro1990

Video idea for you.

Worst (and most important) double faults in tennis history.

I've got three for you...

Berdych's just now and...

Great idea! If you find more of them, let me know

Boy, I don't see it. Even if Fed brings his first set form against Nick, he'll go down 7-6, 6-4. He's tired and he said to Gilbert before the match that the courts are "incredibly slow."

certainly the last month hasnt been full of slams but these 2 week events back to back seems to caught up with him
he doesnt have the sharpness and depth he had a few weeks ago, hes definitely missing something.
Birdman must be spewing he didnt win so he could throw away the next match

Should have known this loser wouldn't have had the spine. Looking at the positives though, if no marks like Mugdych are getting this close then some mug is bound to stop Fed from inflating his slam count even more.

Fed looking more and more shaky at least. Only a matter of time before one of these mugs takes him out and exposes his "amazing form". Hopefully no more slam inflation. M1000s don't even matter anymore.

Fed is there for the taking. The last few matches he's been pretty subpar. But these clowns can't seem to win if you give them a a set and 4-0 lead. They would find some way to mentally MUG it up

Bromance?

To be honest the sharpness was still there in the first couple of sets and even in the third. It was once he got broken whilst serving for the match that he started playing a bit passively (even then was still better than the RBA match).

Lol...I guess we just KNEW Berdy was gonna choke away the 2 match points he had on HIS serve in that final set tie-break. But kudos to him for being the first guy to take a set off Fed since Dubai and come within a whisker of beating him.

Fed's matches seem to be getting progressively tougher for him with each round. Wonder if Kyrgios will turn up this time to play him?

You're either clutch or a choker around here. Let's get one thing straight - Fed was 5-2 up; it should have never even been a TB. And at 6-4 in the TB, Federer hit a good return and Berdych missed a hard shot. Then Fed had clutch serving, and Berdych double faulted. He didn't really choke. He went for the second serve, like he did at 4-5 in the third. That worked. The one in the tie-break didn't. How it goes sometimes...

Exactly. I thought both played a pretty brilliant tiebreak.

I am not saying that Federer cannot lose to Nick. He surely can.

I am just perplexed as to why people think that Nick beating Federer is a given.

Sure, Federer might be tired and as far as I am concerned, he has done a lot more than he has hoped for (or his plan was) in the IW-Miami combo, so he might not be pushing as hard as he can, but the idea that Federer will just fold is preposterous to me.

Federer is the consummate professional and he will do as much as he can given the circumstances, which means that he is more than capable of beating Nick even with half of his game off.

I am just perplexed as to why people think that Nick beating Federer is a given.

1. The court speed and conditions not only don't suit Roger, he's visibly irritated by them. He indicated that to Gilbert today in his pre-match interview.
2. He's not getting a day off between QF's and semis. At 35, that's a big deal and Roger alluded to that this tournament.
3. He just won IW and if Stan was exhausted in Miami because of IW, what must Fed feel? He's almost 4 years older than Stan.
4. His form against Berdych was poor. When was the last time Fed served for a match and was broken at love?
5. He's not played at night in Miami and dislikes conditions at night at this tournament.
6. Fed's serving this week has been atrocious.
7. Nick has a huge serve, is in superlative form and isn't afraid of anyone.

So Nick's coming in on fire and Roger's playing 25% worse than at IW.

Federer needs to take a break again, he is running out of juice on these courts where every point turns into a baseline battle. I agree with those saying he should focus on the tournaments that suit him best, and skip some of the others.

But I guess he thinks he plays his best tennis and can beat anyone anywhere. Some things never change...

Agreed. He could take it easy on clay and return strong for Stuttgart, Halle and Wimbledon.

My respect for Berdych has grown significantly. I didn't expect him to put up such a fight given past history.

I really feel sorry for him, but a double fault on MP is exclusively his fault (pun intended).

Federer part of the draw is almost slam worthy. Nadal has been lucky with its ATP 250 like draw.:D

That's quite true, but only because in Nadal part of the draw, only Nadal managed to maintain his status. He was supposed to meet Dimitrov and Raonic and then Nishikori, but the level was a bit lower on that side. On the Federer side, Wawrinka is missing but all other expected favourites went through.

The most probable final now imo is Nadal/Kyrgios and i'm looking forward that match. I think Federer is tired now and he needs a good rest, he had a far better than i expected month. Title+ semi final is already amazing, if he makes it final, that's even better.

But I believe Kyrgios will certainly love the challenge to face Federer and then Nadal to win the biggest trophy of his career so far and i'd like to finally see him do this.
