mid frames and the 2hbh

Ross K

Legend
How many of you out there wield a mid (by which I mean going up to 93") and use a 2hbh?

I suspect it's a fairly high number as TT has a lot of mid users I think. But, as I recently discovered, this isn't mirrored by the trend among the pro's...

I mean, three years ago (according to a post I came across) I think there were just 8... (yes, a mere eight) mid users in the top 100 (Fed, Calleri, Safin, Acasuso, Schuettler, Roitman, Montfils, Hewitt) - and some of them of course have a 1hbh!... which certainly surprises me.

Anyhow, in all it's aspects (and please so post any and all thoughts that arise), I find this an interesting topic... and not least because a year or two back when you naughty TT racketheads all stoked my racketaholic habit and got me interested in mid frames (yes, it's all your faults! ), I discovered I generally liked quite a few mids but struggled more than a bit with the 2hbh (I could never get a consistant heavy 2hbh with rods like the DNX 10 mid or AG 100 mid and others, whilst moving up to 95" usually yielded far more forgiveness and greater percentages in terms of hitting the sweet spot and grooving a great 2hbh)...

And so to the point of this... I'm just wondering which mid frames you b-line blasting 2hbhers can state positively, 100 per cent and without fear of contradiction kills it as re the 2hbh!

R.

BTW... And, no, I'm not saying it's all to do with the frame!!!... I know full well it's largely down to technique, etc... However, in light of all I've said earlier (minescule amount of pro's using mids who hit a 2hbh... mine amd others similar issues)... 2hbh and mid frames?... let's discuss!

Ross K'
I'm hitting my best 2hbh since I switched to 90" Vantage frame. I think it is due to the wt. and balance of the stick...not really sure exactly. With other frames I always had an issue with bad timing at the contact. Somehow my mid frame resolved this issue rather naturally without much effort.

I did fine with the ag100 but it felt a bit too stiff. My Fischer pro number one red/black/white feels nice

I guess this includes me. I play with a 2hbh with the Prince Tour Diablo Mid 93. Very solid off both wings.

I do. No problems with my bh, but it is almost flat. I feel it would be difficult to hit a 2hbh with heavy topspin with a mid racquet.

I was hitting some nice ones today. I havn't used a 2hbh in a while. I watched some videos on the tube so I thought I'd try.
So for the have been pretty good. I am still working but as of the moment, no problems.

I play a Prestige 600 and my 2HBH is my best shot by far.:) I hit a flat shot with the 2HBH, in comparison with my topspin forehand.

Everyone,

Interesting...

I think there were a few name-checks of the MG Pres mid (which echoes with my own feelings as being 1 of of those rare mids I can use pretty effectively on the 2hbh)...

I see the Vantage got a mention (of note to me as I've recently been playing the VT 95)...

The legendary PC600 too (I've never had the pleasure unfortunately)...

Tour Diablo mid (don't know this 1, though I recall 1 of these Prince mids as being very stiff...?)

Anyway, keep them coming... and do say anything else that chimes with the whole subject.

Thanks,

R.

I used the Prestige 600 for a Nadal-style backhand off my forehand side because of an injury. (Normally use a one-handed, but am ambi.) My impressions: Mids take a long fast swing to produce real power IMO. My 2-handed was more forgiving, better than my 1-handed for stability and return of service. Buddies said I was hitting a "heavier" ball. Not as good for placement, touch shots, and cross-court when I could really wind up with a 1. Wash for topspin, not as good for slice. Mainly, just not as kinesthetically pleasing as the 1-handed, if that makes any sense.

PS: Owned a Diablo Mid, used it for a one-handed. Stiffness of 66, if I recall, surprising power, great feel. But it was best known as Capriati's stick, and she had a two hander...

Ross... you know i'm more of an HEAD OS guy, but i do have some mids i use quite often (nowadays more often than not) and i do it with a 2hbh...

becker 10 mid and yonex rd-7 & rq-120 fwiw...

Gorecki,

The 2 mids I found some joy with on the 2hbh are the MG Pres mid (haven't played lots with this rack but others ^above seem to verify this), and the BB11 mid. I didn't actually know the RD7 came in mid size (I'm a fan of the MP frame actually, though it was a bit too hefty.)

Everyone,

FWIW and though I'm not particularly looking, something like a MG Pres mid in an open pattern would def tweak my interest... 93" head-size... some 'body' behind it... and if it could serve like the AG100 mid - even better!... anyone?

ooops... my bad... you are correct... the rd-7 is technically a midplus... 95 sqin!

anyways, the rq-120 i bliebve is some 92,5 sqin... if i am not wrong!

i find the ag100 really comfortable for my 2hbh. had to tweek the timing a hair, but no complaints. that said is find myself using the mid mostly for practice to work on precision. when playing matches i resort back to an aging radical mp.

spazz,

Q. What's the lead mods - if any?

I could very well be tempted to look at it again because I liked the AG100 mid a lot, but always found it lacking in 'body' - which, for me, effects the 2hbh... has to be said though: the AG100 is stupidly good re serve, just effortless!...

Larry, Fu,

Not familiar with the RDS 001 at all... what are it's particular traits, if I may ask?

Gorecki,

I actually nabbed a Yonex mid last year that plays pretty devine (as befits a frame that was meant to have been one of Aaron Krickstein's)... mega-solid and uber-flexy (like hitting with a pillow!)... I can't recall the name of it now (RQ 280 perhaps?... shall confirm later)... will have to dig it out this summer and take another look.

afaik, most rq-XXX frames were solid and flexy, as is the rq-120... with only one thing i dislike in that particular frame, wich is the non-constant beam. other than that... lovely!

Ross K -

I found more control and placing shots are much easier than my LM Rad, but those things are expected with a smaller frame. Also, volleys and net play are much more enjoyable as it feels really stable. Power was okay, but is great now that I have added some lead. I do have to say that I don't really see a big difference in spin potential when compared to the 18x20 pattern as I found top spin shots fine with the 18x20.

On the other hand, it is not forgiving. Play lazy and you will shank a lot of shots. With the LM Rad, I got away with a lot of mishits, but not the RDS001. I guess this is a good thing, the racquet demands results from me in order for me to get the results I demand from it.

Stock. I ended up having to get it restrung a little tighter (60lbs) to keep the ball from spraying a little long and wide. And I had to tweak my mechanics a little, having gotten used to getting away with more reflexive shots with a lighter, forgiving racquet. That's sort of my deal now, practice with the mid, compete with an old radical.

Well, I played the MG Prest mid 2 days ago (only the 2nd time) and you lot are right...

In keeping with its distinctive personality, I found that when I went for it, fully commited, long stroke, etc, this frame nails it into the corners just beautifully on the 2hbh!

That said, I couldn't do this consistently and generally it's probably a bit to demanding... but that feeling when you blast it, flat and low, fast and furious, a laser-guided heat-seeking missile through a small gap to a far corner... just call me Marat, okay?!

I can actually hit both shots quite well but 2hb is my main. In special cases where a high kicking shot is placed right at the optimum hitting zone, I use a 1hander to bring the ball back down. Sort of like a reversed wiper motion.

Waist height or below, I use a 2hander.

Im use a youtek prestige mid btw
