Milan New Rules Stunning Success with Best of Five Sets

Didn't know they allow the crowd to come and go any time. I was wondering why there are so much white noise during all the matches.

It's like watching matches in one of those Clubs with swimming pool nearby. Or the noise coming from VIP section at Bank of the West (where no one is watching tennis and everyone is drinking :D)

It'll be the start of the end for tennis. Cause these new rules to attract the dumb generation won't work. So they will start chaning more and more stuff. Like playing in the dark with neon balls. Whatever todays 16 year olds are into.
Yes, yes, very good to grow the game. I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.
Love the idea of glowing balls,
Black light,
Hiphop music with monotone lyrics and an AAAA rhyme-scheme, set to looped beatz by docter dray,
Chinstrap beards,
Livestreamed coverage with choice of flower OR dog filters,
An app that tells the players when to applaud an opponent's good shot.
Vaping during Chair massages on change of ends,
The place smells like red velvet churro vape!
drawings for free tuition to law school at CostCo,
Apparel priced at 800% of usual retail because of the red and white SUPREME sticker,
And.... Pumpkin spice tater totz at all concession stands!

I was a rabid volleyball player in my 20's and when they decided to change the scoring system from "side-out" scoring (score a point only when serving) to "rally" scoring (point is scored no matter who is serving), and lengthened the game to 25 points instead of 15 - I thought the world was collapsing around me. Fast forward 10+ years later and it just seems natural. Who knows, maybe tennis can follow suit. "If" it raises the popularity of the game maybe it's not so bad.

Call me narrow minded if you want, but I'm not a fan of any of these "improvements" if we want to call it that. My beef isn't with the shot clock or Hawkeye everywhere, I can live with that. What I will never get behind is the shorter set and on-court coaching and no ad-scoring, no let. Men's tennis has always been about tradition and should stay like that. Tennis is already pretty much guaranteed to lose a lot of "classic fans" when Federer retires, implement these new rules and you're sure you lose even more fans. Sorry ATP, but 2 thumbs down is what I'm giving you right now.

Commentators just said that so far in all the matches, the person who gets the first break in a set has won the set every time. No chance of fighting back in sets any more. Better to just tank and try to get a break in the following set.

The other advantage of the electronic line judge is, the call is prompt, there is no question of a late call so no argument about whether the point should be replayed or not.

Yes, there is no intrigue or suspense. Get to 3 games and the set is yours, basically. So if you serve first, you are more likely to win the set. There must be a reason why the scoring is designed the way it is. There is no need to re-invent the wheel.

The Meles propaganda still going strong.

Point of the tournament and maybe the year in Milan. Shaps goes down a break "late" in a set
3rd
. Quinzi goes to 0-40 trying to serve it out and then holds three points to the deciding point. And what a point! Quinzi wins it and he has the set. Shaps wins it and it is straight to a breaker. All the chips on the table and a magnificent point. That's all I'll say; won't give away the result.
Shaps won and incredible point with an incredible backhand and then fought back in the breaker after going down and was back on serve 5-6, but lost and 4th set has begun.

I don't get it, if your opponent win the 3 first sets, can you still win with only two sets? It doesn't make sense

Edit : Never mind.

The shot clock starts a bit late, doesn't it? It seems to start after the score is called, whereas my impression from the rule book is that you count from the end of the point - i.e. when there's a winner or a fault.
If you're right, it's a bit different. I have not seen these matches, so I'm interested in reports.

I am - I looked closely. In essense, you have approx. 30 seconds between points.
30 second between points has always been closer to the norm than we think. You just have to be stubborn enough to use a stopwatch and start timing the moment the last point is over.

Also, the time between 1st and 2nd serve can be ridiculous.

I'm not part of the VB, but I like Nadal a lot and follow his matches. But his delays are excruciating.

I dislike most of the new rules. Why do we have dumb down this great sport just because of the Snapchat generation?

Definitely not a 100% success, more like 90% failure. When these rules come to the main tour, which they will as soon as Fedal retires, it'll be the start of the end for tennis.

they've done the same thing with cricket, which used to be hugely popular, now they have shortened 20/20 and the game is on the decline.

I am in lock step with the Federistas in this wish. Is it really healthy for the sport to have 20,000 people in stadium watching 30 minutes of but picking and delay per match?:D

You point to an important issue: I was of course incorrect to describe the timeless law that Nadal upholds as "beautiful". It is not beautiful. It is, however, a moral law and, as such, is far more important than whatever rules the tour institutes. It does indeed do 20,000 people untold good to be exposed to such greatness. For example, few people are humble these days. While it would be unrealistic to expect anyone to achieve such heights of modesty as Nadal has shown over the course of his long career, watching him in action might spur the crowd to at least a modicum of humility.

100% NOT healthy.

But if you want to make tennis a lot more interesting, take away the 2nd serve!!!

Tried to watch a few matches but just can’t get in to it, not sure if it’s the distraction of the new format or the sense that it’s just an exhibition by players I don’t much care about but I’m not watching any more.
I’d take the clock and add a not let rule and leave it at that.

The new format is interesting to watch, but wouldn't work -- best of 3, 6 game sets is much better at determining skill. There would be upsets galore, and way less ranking points at the top of the game. So much easier to fluke-win a set. Not to mention the fact of how common tiebreaks would be, which is a whole other ball-game in itself.

If you want to make tennis more interesting, reduce the sweet spot on the rackets back to the tiny size it was in the days of the original wooden rackets and diversifying the surfaces.

Job done.

Let's do this, tennis industry. Let's bring back varied, wonderful tennis. If only at the pro and college levels. All brands can get together, and make unlimited versions of pro stock, restricted frames. Rec players can buy all the game improvement crap they want/need to live in ball bashing tweener hell.

Baseball is a great example of this. Little leaguers use tinny tech bats. Big leaguers hit with real wood.

Now...Solution time.
Is wood sustainable? I loved a maxply. I liked maxply mcenroe even more....and head vilas, and slaz v24, and le coq noah...even better.
A or B?
A. anything mostly wood with a bit of graphite to make a 90 to 98 head work.
Or
B. graphite in a 98 head or below? Or 93 head or below? Sub 90? Max 200Gs all around the world?

I would want a babolat pure strike 90, or a prestige pro 93. I want richard krajicek' yonex. Or stich's vacuum pro ninety. Or the old black volkl c10 comp 93.

Ok, back on topic.
I am good with all the changes. Five short sets, crowd can walk, crowd can cheer, no ad scoring, play the lets, shot clock, fun music, robots call lines, whateve. Still tennis to me, especially if the racquets do not contribute to robot tennis. I am actually going to try this in singles and dubs friday night and saturday morning.

Absolutely spot on. Tennis was never meant to be a mass sport for the sort of dumb people who can't sit still for five minutes and don't have the patience to watch a let point being played. Get to your seat for the start of the match, sit down, shut up and respect the players as they play the game and the rules that have delivered thrills and artistry for decades.
How old are you? 60?

Using Hawkeye is a great because you can't argue with the system and it speeds up the 30+ seconds you need for every challenge.

I also think the shot clock is a great idea. I think that they should start the clock almost immediately after each point. If you need more time than the 25 seconds then you call for an extension which extends the shot clock another 25 seconds. Each player would be allowed one or two extensions per set.

No lets is also great. A let cord is 50/50 on who it benefits so let the odds play themselves out.

No Ad scoring is on the fence for me. It speeds up the matches but also cuts out some of the drama in a match.

I don't like the shorter sets. It makes it really hard to come back in a set and you lose a lot of drama. Once you are broken that set is over. Imagine this past Australian Open final if it was played to 4. Nadal had a 3-1 lead and Federer would probably have folded in the end.

These rules are genius for using outside of the slams. The bo3 format was never very good anyway. This is much more efficient. I still think the slams should preserve the history of the gAmerican, but this is perfect for the regular tour. Anyone complaining that the tour is too demanding and players don't get needed rest should be advocates of this format. The old bo3 format was designed for a different era, not the modern physical game. This will save the players bodies much better.

?..It's beautiful as it is.
I agree with this. maybe not stylistically, but terms of process.
Why are they doing these things? Why experiment? They are responding to shorter attention span fans.
Tennis is popular as i see busy courts, but, it has fallen off in popularity worldwide. Fewer riveted fans these days. Flat number of very casual fans. Very few people watch a whole match these days. Too much adhd. Too much to do and not do!
Tennis will never die out, but these measures might prevent some of the fading.

I've never seen so much blasphemy in one thread. This is a sport in its greatest age, there is absolutely no reason (except Hawk-Eye calling) to change a sport in its best days. This isn't test cricket or some ridiculous arrangement that we have now in tennis. The 2 greatest matches ever were played among active players ('08 Wimby final and '12 AO final). Both the fans and the majority of players don't like these dumb gimmicks. I wouldn't mind this NextGen finals with the new rules continuing every year (sorta like Laver Cup or IPTL) but we should keep it from spreading to the rest of the tour.

If a best of 3 sets match goes the distance in tie breakers, there is a max of 39 games played, with 3 tiebreakers. (If only two sets then its 26 games 2 tiebreakers)

If this format goes the distance, there is a max of 35 games played with 5 tiebreakers.

It seems to me that is pretty similar in scope with plenty of opportunities for comebacks and upsets. You just have to hit the ground running.

I am not saying the change has to be made, but I don't really see what all the vitriol is about.

But if this format helps lessen injuries, lengthen careers, and brings more people to tennis then I would be all for it. I hate the fact that so many players are out with injuries and I attribute that to the pounding they take over such a long season.

P.S. I am 52 years old so I can appreciate the "old timey" ways. lol

I'm not trying to spread hatred, it's just that this decade is arguably the greatest in history for tennis, and we shouldn't go the way of other long-lasting sports and dumb it down.

Understood. I just don't see why it is "dumbing down". It's just a different way of presenting a match. You still have to beat the other guy.

I also think it's amusing how many people are screaming "don't change tennis...well, except for hawkeye... or the shot clock...or whatever change "I" like..." etc.

It's not like tennis hasn't evolved, right? Or maybe should we go back to long pants, wooden racquets, and rubber balls.

Your forecasting genius incredible.:p The below was incredible.
This match pretty much seals the case. Possibly the best/most entertaining three set match in a long, long time. Incredible intensity and play with no antics or disruption. Best of 5 set format on display at Milan spectacular. The coaching between sets amazing especially with Shapavolav lol. (Anyone looking to market something the future has arrived.) The coaching talk with Shaps while Rublev took MTO at end of set priceless. Sadly the morons making the above video removed this or did not have access. This is a marketing bonanza for tennis. The intensity and interest in the players will be greatly escalated. With the intricacies of coaching the best in the world revealed, tennis ready for another boom. Compelling and simply incredible.

@gogo on the case no doubt for commentary.
