Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 5

Heel looks funny but I have a pair of Wave Rider Neo running shoes with that same 'elf shoe' achilles/heel design and man, are they comfortable.

Well,

it looks like they messed them up, for me, at least.

I see what looks like a non-padded tongue from the one side view they provide.

The tongue change is what drove me from the Rush Pro 2.5 after the latest update. Wilson helped with the airflow, which was a positive, but I just don't jibe with the flat, low cut tongues.

Too bad, Mizuno.

Can’t judge a shoe on eye test alone except maybe for shape/last. Personally it looks pretty similar to the 4s except maybe for that heel and some people complained of slippage (I didn’t have this issue) so maybe that’s why they are tweaking. Happy it looks similar enough because the 4s are awesome. Definitely will give these a try on and go from there when they come out. The 4s look better, though. Not a fan of the larger Mizuno logo.

High hopes for these. I've come to truly love the 4s over time, just an awesome shoe and accommodating for my wider stubborn foot. Great higher arch support too. As they say here with the 5s, I also noticed that the 4s really stick to the court more than I'd like, would like a touch more give on slide-stops, but this improves as the sole ages a bit. Will definitely try these.

i tried on a pair yesterday. Upper is softer, more malleable. Fit is slightly wider. Slightly lower to the ground but still great cushioning. If you like the 4, you will like the 5.

Main tweak I'd have made to the 4 would be slightly lower to the ground in feel, so this further intrigues. Nice.

Y'all are making me really interested in this shoe. Really like the black one, may have to pull the trigger.

JGads,

I do not see them in TWE's system but I will follow up and let you know if something is different.

Thanks,
Brittany, TW

I walked around in the 5's for a few hours. Some more things i noticed: The tongue is not nearly as padded. They took out a little cushioning up front. The 5's are definitely lighter. But the out of the box comfort was a little better with the 4's. My two cents.

I noticed under fit details on your website it says the length is slightly long. Do you recommend going with your normal size or going down a half size?

I'd also like an answer to this question. The wave 5 remains an option, but I've never worn a Mizuno shoe.

On TW under their fit description for length they say it is slightly long. What are your thoughts? Do they fit true to size or is there a need to go down a half size?

This is my primary concern... I like a tongue with cushion. Also, reading that this shoe is/fits wider doesn't sound good for me, personally.

I was able to try them in person and my normal size was a bit too long. I normally wear Vapor X's in 8.5 They unfortunately did not have my half size down so I just ordered from TW. Hopefully they wont be too short. I will just wear them around the house when they arrive.

Yesterday I ordered a pair from TW. I just went ahead with my usual size. Hopefully it works out.

I ordered my normal size 12 and seems like the right fit. Just right at the toe for length. I have a narrow foot.

For reference, here's the sizes that fit me in other shoes:
Nike GP Turbo: 12
Asics Court FF2: 11.5
Asics Solution Speed FF: 12
Diadora B Icon: 11.5
Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 4: 12

Some thoughts:
*The upper is crazy soft and comfortable.
*The sole/midsole is very flexible
*I wouldn't call it a wide toe box, but the upper is so soft and flexible that it might accommodate a wide foot.
*It kind of just molds to your foot and feels like you've put on a pair of the early gen Nike free running shoes, but with lateral tennis shoe stability. In contrast to the B Icons, which feel running shoe-ish, kind of like a Vapor 9, but not soft.
*If you like a plush, soft tongue, you won't like them. Will see how the break in, but I can definitely feel the end of the tongue digging into the top of my foot on certain movements. May just have to add some moleskin or something to soften them.
*It's been a while since I tried the Tour 4's but they feel less cushioned than what I remembered. Initial impression is slightly less cushioned than Speed FFs.
*Arch is a little further back than most shoes, kind of like a superfeet insole.

It's really hard to calibrate how these shoes feel when my main shoe right now is the GP Turbo. They are both extremely comfortable, but get there in opposite ways. Turbos are tall, very rigid, and springy, Tour 5's are low, very flexible, and quick feeling.

Need more court time but I think I prefer them to the B Icons for a match day shoe. I'm not prone to ankle rolling, but I could see that for some these are so soft that the B Icons might be a better choice.

Thanks for the detailed review! Does the Tour 5 have a removable insole for those of us with a custom orthotic? What's the traction like?

Update after a few more hours of play:

*They run warmer than the GP Turbos or Court FF2s. The upper material, although soft, is not as breathable as you'd think. The unpadded tongue probably doesn't help either.
*They are very fast feeling...faster than the Speed FFs and B Icons.
*Definitely less cushioned than Speed FFs or B Icons, but has more of the "energy return", springy-ness than you'd think as low to the ground as they are. Enerzy may not be a marketing gimmick.
*Best shoe I've tried for feeling connected to the court (hard courts).
*Still haven't found the right lace combo to keep my heel locked in. Have never had to resort to a runner's knot in a tennis shoe, but may give that a try.
*Traction, although good, is not as good as GP Turbo or Court FF2. For some reason, they seem to pick up the dust/dirt on the court a little more than those 2 shoes. I don't think it'll be a problem, and they're not slippery but something I noticed.
*The build quality is just fantastic. Probably shouldn't be surprised from a Japanese company, but may be the best constructed shoe I've worn since the Asics GR4. Made in Vietnam btw.

I just received my pair from TW yesterday. I haven’t had a chance to hit the courts with them yet but I did try them on and wear them around the house for a bit. Really comfortable shoe out of the box. Really light weight. It’s awesome that a shoe this light has an outsole warranty.
I agree with TW’s fit description that they run slightly long, however I don’t think one would need to go down a half size. I’d assume if I went down a half size then they might be too small. The tongue of the shoe is really thin. I did notice the tongue on the left shoe did “dig” into the top of my foot a bit. Probably not a big deal. Hopefully that’ll work itself out after I get on the court with them. They definitely seem like an excellent constructed shoe.

Got mine yesterday….light and flexible, but forefoot cushion seems a bit thin. Will probably return.
What is as light with more cushioning??

Asics Solution Speed FF2 is the same type of light, speed shoe with a little more cushion but has much lower arch. If that's not an issue for you it might be worth a shot.

is this good shoes ? will you do a review soon ??

@Nostradamus the Speed FF2 has a much lower arch, but better cushioning than the Exceed Tour 5. I need more arch and only played in them 4-5 hours and gave them away.

But if you need a wide-ish toe box and have a flat foot, and want a balance of speed and cushioning, Speed FF2 is a good shoe.

Here's my thoughts from last year comparing to the previous Speed FF: http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/index.php?threads/asics-speed-ff2.685745/post-15005315

Need a few more hours on the Mizuno's then I'll try to do a more detailed compare on between the two.

Is the Mizuno as good as Yonex eclipsion ?

Thus far very happy with these. Stable and a lot less squishy than Asic Speed Solution FF which broke down very quickly.

I have played in the Mizunos a few times now and they are roomier than the previous gen. Almost too much room for me actually as my foot slides around laterally a bit in them, even after swapping out to my superfeet insole. I may have to double sock or get the maximum cushioned thorlos. TennisSpin made a big deal about how light they are. I weighed the gen 4 and the gen 5 with stock insoles and with my size 10s they came in at 334g and 324g respectively. So they are lighter but only by 10g. These do look sleeker as the gen 4 looked bulky to the naked eye. I still don't think these are as good as the GR8 for me. The Asics have better rebound/bounce back or whatever it's called (probably due to the gel) whereas these feel lower to the ground. These are more similar to the Nike Vapors IMO.

Whelp,

I just ordered a pair in my usual US11.5 along with the new Lotto Raptor colorway.

BTW, at the US v UA BJK matches, Kichenok in the doubles had the Exceed Tour 5 on (no sponsorship that I know of).

I'm getting more used to shoes with "no tongue" (I like, but don't love my Rush Pro 3.0) so I may be able to deal with it.

I suspect I will like the Raptor more (big fan of the Mirage 100) but we'll see how it plays out when I get them this weekend.

Based on Foot Doc Zach's review and my experience with the Wave 4s - these do not seem like they are going to work for me.

Great shoe review. He seems to have a slight preference for heavy stability shoes. Still not sure how I will like the 5s, but I love the 4s.
