MLB 2019 Season: Shipping Up To Boston

Nationals are down 2-0 after Greinke wiggled out of a bases loaded jam in the third when Cabrera fanned on a filthy breaking ball.

Robles lashes a drive inside the 3B bag that Bregman couldn’t reach and he drives in Zimmerman from first on the triple. He pops up with the grownup shark gesture. 2-1.

Martinez decided to stay with Sanchez instead of a PH and Robles is stranded at 3B on a K and a dribbler by Turner to Greinke.

It is high time that Corbin stepped up in the postseason!!
Entering Game 4 with a 6.91 postseason ERA.
We pray for Corbin to finally awake from his slumber and lift the underdog loveable Nationals to victory.

Looks like we got ourselves a series now.

Nats looked like a completely different team last night. They beat JV & Cole by keeping the line moving with RISP, but couldn't get any hits with men on last night. They had their opportunities. Wonder if Greinke is just a worse match-up for that lineup or if they just lost a little momentum with the travel day.

So why did the Astros have so much confidence in the first inning against a guy who had a .227 batting average against this year? Because Corbin has a plan and the Astros knew about it.

And before you get into your theories about the Astros picking up tipped pitches or even filming them, this isn't what we're talking about. What we're talking about was presented very clearly by the creator of Baseball Savant, Daren Willman.

Take a look at Corbin's strikeout locations this season below.
Corbin loves to get his Ks on sliders down and into righties, or down and out to lefties, and up with fastballs. And while the Astros got hits in non-strikeout situations, these numbers are pretty indicative of how Corbin attacks hitters. Every single hit by the Astros in the first inning — with the exception of Altuve's — came on a pitch down and in. Altuve's was on a slider that was more middle down.

It was like Houston knew what was coming. And that's because it did. Corbin had a pattern all year long and he used that same pattern in the first inning of Game 4.

2019 WS SP stats:

Scherzer 5.0 IP, 2 runs, 112 pitches

Cole 7.0 IP, 5 runs 104 pitches

Strasburg 6.0 IP, 2 runs, 114 pitches

Verlander 6.0 IP, 4 runs, 107 pitches

Greinke 4-2/3 IP, 1 run, 95 pitches

Sanchez 5-1/3 IP, 4 runs, 93 pitches

Corbin, 6.0 IP, 4 runs, 96 pitches

Urquidy, 5.0 IP, ZERO runs, 67 pitches.

The lowest salary of the 7 other pitchers: Sanchez at $10MM. Urquidy earned $.55MM

Moral of the story: You don’t always get what you pay for.

Scherzer looked absolutely horrible (by his Cy Young standards) in Game 1 but managed to pitch himself out of trouble.
Is Scherzer capable of bringing his A game? Or is there some injury we do not know about?
Scherzer versus the best pitcher of 2019 Cole.
Must win for Nationals!!

Scherzer hurt??? Not pitching game 5. If they lose, I dunno if they can repeat games 1 and 2 beating them 2 again.

Neck and back spasms KO their ace Scherzer. Joe Ross will be the SP for the Nationals tonight. Ross pitched two innings of one-hit relief on Friday night in Game 3.

Lol Washington. How do you lose to Greinke and Uriquidy at home? Hoping Strasburg shuts down Mr. Upton and the fake DV haters tomorrow and Corbin shows up for a clutch game 7 performance.

What a pathetic ugly display by the Nationals. Martinez must take some of the blame for allowing this team to have such an inexcusable mental letdown.
And why are Astros coaches able to figure out patterns and tendencies for Corbin but Nationals cannot do likewise for Cole?

The only silver lining is that Cole is out and Nationals might have an edge in Game 7 with Scherzer and/or hapless choker Corbin .
But Scherzer said he could not even get out of bed. Does not look good. Corbin can get out of bed just fine but it is what happens after he gets out of bed.
How many times is Corbin gonna get banged up in the very first inning? The great ones are supposed to rise to the occasion for the big games. Where is the intensity from this guy? :(

This is all moot as Strasburger needs to step up and pull off another miracle vs the best in the business Verlander. Cannot see Verlander going 0-6.

Hoping a clutch Corbin game 7 on three days is a tough ask (he will bull pen it). Assuming Verlander doesn't expel the demons and home team finally wins a game.

Tom laid it out pretty well in his Urquidy thing, but I read somewhere to piggy back that the first inning with no hits in this series didn't happen till game 4. Who woulda thought.

Scherzer with a cortisone shot means he will probably go game 7 if they get to it. And if he can move he will start. Maybe pull out some Jack Morris heroics and stamp his already worthy HOF resume.

In hindsight scherzers back set them up in the first place for disaster but could potentially be a blessing in disguise if they can get gm 6. The fear of Scherzer not being able to go limited the use of the relivers in games three and 4. If Scherzer is 100% you probably take sanchez out instead of letting him hit and let Hudson and Doolittle give you two innings. If the nats only had one more reliable arm in the pen. but they don't which is why Corbin comes in on his scheduled throwing session days.

hopefully game 6 we get the instant classic pitchers duel everyone is expecting. But then A. Eaton will probably hit a homer after Verlander walks turner to start the game.

Ross pitched very well in emergency duty with just one day of rest after 2 innings. The Alvarez dinger was on a decent pitch...no shame there. The Correa dinger should never have happened after Guessdale’s blown third strike non-call.

I hate to agree with Sabooshs about anything but he’s spot on about automation behind the plate. The time has come.

He is taking the cortisone shot and hoping for the best. But Scherzer looks awful and can barely turn his head. Can't dress himself. Has he commented on his probability for Game 7?
I'd say less than 10% that he can be ready to even give a few innings... But it is Game 7 and he might pull out the heroics.

Nothing official but they said cortisone takes 48 hours to work. The NFL would just hop him up on opiates and whatever else you can think of then bust him for some trace amount of weed you get from hand cream.
I think he wont have to pitch cuz HOU will win 7. They have Karma on their side for canning the Asst GM :)

What is with carrying the bat down to first base? Is that a thing? Soto just did it but maybe it was just retribution for Bregman?

Clutch pitching from Strasburg to get Altuve to fish and then Brantley on a grounder played perfectly by SS Turner on the first base side of second. Still 3-2.

Robles ticked off the umpires in Game 5 and he is paying for it tonight on every close call on checked swings and pitches.

Good pitching by Strasburg with only Alvarez making hard contact. Two dribblers and a K to go with the line drive flagged down for an infield out.

His pitch count is low...77 through five innings. Without a stumble, he will go 7-8 innings tonight.

Smoltz just said his stuff is getting better.
Has settled down after getting rocked in the first. Leave Strasburger in as long as his stuff looks good.

Without pitchers batting, he’ll go at least seven.

Totally bogus runner’s interference call robs Washington of an out and RISPs.

BS to take that long and not overturn a really bad call. His foot hit the middle of the bag as he was hit by the throw.
