Wow. What great contributions to this thread.

Thank you for your in-depth analysis and insight. You make the internet a better place to visit.

Yes, because your post consisting of 3 names was very in-depth and insightful.

I'm sorry your precious Silva couldn't even knock out a jitsu guy in Leites. Couldn't even rock him.

they are a dumb argument. comparing guys from different weight classes is worthless. we will never know who is better than who. if you want to talk about top guys at a weight class thats fine because they may actually fight or have fought. but to say gsp is better than fedor who is better than silva is dumb.

Pound for pound rankings was developed by the boxing industry to promote smaller fighters without knockout power.

Everybody knows nobody right now can beat Fedor. GSP cant do it, Silva cant do it. What P4P really does is say who is dominating thier weightclass more than the other guys are dominating thiers.

Based off that Fedor destroys everyone so he would be my vote.

Fedor is going to fight Aoki in a special exhibition match.
In a report released today by kamipro.com, top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko will take on lightweight Shinya Aoki in a grappling match to be held on April 29th in the 3rd installment of DEEP M-1 Challenge.

While there has yet to be an official announcement and the idea of this match-up could seem a tad unbelievable, this isn’t the first time these two names have been thrown around in a potential fight. There’s no secret that Japanese promotions love to put on fights featuring their biggest stars, at times ignoring size and reason, and Fedor and Aoki are two of the biggest fan-favorites.
P4P:

1. Fedor
2. Anderson Silva
3. Who knows.

I really can't take GSP super seriously as P4P king, to me he doesn't seem super well rounded, relying more on his athleticism.

then put torres. that guy is nasty. seriously he is one of the meanest fighters ever. and its amazing he wins with frank mirs lips attached to his backside during the entire fight.

the fedor aoki fight doesnt really hold alot of intrest to me. its gonna be a glorified sparring session. there changing the rules around and its got zero meaning to it. i do like aoki's tights though. nice colorful things.

even then how the hell is aoki gonna put up much of a resistance. the weight difference is crazy and on top that fedor is very good at controlling grounded opponents.

^ I think I heard Aoki walks around at a much heavier weight than what he fights at. They're not going to make it a real MMA fight. You see Aoki's last fight? He fought up a weight class and he nearly got murdered. You don't want to be on the ground with Fedor's ground and pound if you're a super heavyweight, let alone if you're Aoki.

almost all of them walk around much heavier. ya he went for a leg lock and found a knee to the face in his last fight. i know japan loves the freak matchups but this is just nuts. i dont really get the point of it. why put a heavyweight and one of the best ever vs a lightweight?

True, but I think they mostly say that when somebody normally walks around much much heavier.

Seems like the new thing in MMA is to fight below what people in the past would have considered your advisable fighting weight. This season of TUF, a few of the Americans passed out. Seems like the philosophy is to lose a bit of weight, but to keep as much strength and weight as possible for the fight, then suffer for the weigh in, and then come in fight night with, hopefully, a significant advantage in weight and strength. Some of the fights now, guys look 15 maybe even 20 pounds heavier than what they're listed as being in the head to head stats before the bell.

thiago alves walks around at a little over 190 and fights at 170. thats why he struggles to make weight but because of his height he refuses to fight at 185. i would like to see them weigh in on fight day and get guys fighting at natural weight. watching matt hughes vs alves was a joke as the size difference come weight day was easily 15-20 lbs.

I had Torres as #3. I agree that he's a mean SOB. The first time I saw him fight I thought he would get his ass kicked because he looks so skrawny. But he's quick as hell, has knockout power, and has good defense.

Aside from that, I don't disagree that pound-for-pound rankings are useless, but they're at least a way to discuss relative dominance across different weight classes. There's no sense comparing bantamweight fighters to heavyweights, for example. Why even bother?

Since everyone compares W-L records and titles across different weight classes, I think that's just the same as p4p rankings anyways.

I think that would cause some serious shifts in the top 10 rankings, especially with UFC fighters. I guess the reason they might NOT want to do that is they have less time to replace a fighter who doesn't make weight, and if they're promoting a mega fight for months, they want to give a guy on the edge plenty of time to make the fight happen, but it definitely seems like it would be more fair to make the weigh in a few hours or even minutes before the fight.

GSP and Thiago should be very interesting. They both usually look bigger than their opponents, but not this time.

The problem with weigh ins the day of is that guys still cut but the body hasnt recovered from the cutting. And head trama is highly more likely in that instance.

What they should do is require a weigh a weel proir to the fight. allow 3 pounds over the limit. any pound higher and that fighter has to relinquish 5% of his take. then do the official weigh in 24 hours prior. That makes it harder for guys to cut extreme where it detrimental to long term health. And also tougher for the guys to fight at a low weight.

weigh ins day of would force guys to fight at there natural weight. im sick of watching guys that are almost 200lbs cutting to 170. then putting it back on and killing guys that weigh 180 on fight night. i dont care about what long term effective it has on the guy cutting im more concerned with guys coming in 10-20 lbs more than there opponent. like 35ft said gsp vs alves is more even because gsp is a big 170.

I could also personally care less what they do. But these guys would still cut weight the same way they do before, except somebody would die from head trama because the body cant recoop that quick. Thats why they do it the way they do. It's an issue of fighter safety and thats why the commisions do it day prior.

they wouldnt cut if they had to weigh in day of. maybe a few pounds but nothing like 20-25 lbs were seeing now. its not possible to win if you come in that dehydrated and tired. so they would fight at there natural weight.

That should be an interesting fight. I dont think forrest can really damage silva. But will the extra weight make trouble for silva to control forrests takedown/bullying attempts.

Spider says he walks around 220ish so he may be more game not having to cut so much weight. Im assuming the fight would be at 205 limit though. maybe have a catch weight in the 195 range.

Silva has stated he wants fedor and would be 220 for that fight, so who knows.

Oh man, Fedor versus Silva would be bananas!

Forrest should be interesting. On one hand, Forrest is a gamer, and maybe Dana thinks this should be a good antidote to the "boring" Silva fights we'd seen, that Forrest will charge hard not allowing Silva to rack up points on his way to victory. But on the other hand, Forrest is a very intelligent fighter, and I don't think he's going to want a slug fest with Andersen. Even at light heavyweight, his hands are dynamite.

If he's going to start fighting light heavyweight more, put him up against Machida. I know the casual UFC fan will probably boo that fight until his lung explodes but to me that would be fascinating.

he wont fight machida. he has said it many times in interviews. they are good friends. that is one of the main reasons he doesnt wanna fight at 205. if he wins at 205 a fight with machida is gonna happen he doesnt want it.

Rashard could slip a Haymaker in there and stun Lyoto at which point Spider could claim he wants a shot at the belt if he can beat forrest..

Spider vs Forrest is almost make or break for Spider as far as the fans go. The casual fan worships the ground forrest walks on. and if Spider fights smart and feels him out the opeople will go crazy booing. Spider needs to finish him or they need to exchange like forrest and bonnar at TUF finale because another lame decision and Spider wont get much more hype IMO.

Machida is the favorite. But Rashad is a true MMA fighter. And by that I mean he is pretty effective in every aspect of the game and more importantly he transitions from one mode to the next pretty seamlessly.

Great fight. Two legitimately elite fighters who are undefeated fighting for the belt. Fights like these are why I am easing up on the crazy lunatic egomaniac who is Dana White.

Anybody notice Kim Yamamoto was watching the action in the last episode of TUF, sitting next to Dana?

I know Fedor dominates the heavyweight division, but truthfully, he is fat. These days, you have 6'1 fighters in the lw division so Fedor dropping to lhw might not be a bad idea. Fedor vs. Spider at lhw would be a classic.

i agree with 35ft rashad isnt the walkover people are making him out to be. i agree machida is a good fighter but i wouldnt be shocked if rashad was to win.

i think forrest was a great match up for the ufc. his a fan favorite and he will not flop every time silva tries to hit him. he is very smart but i dont see what hole in silva's game he could exploit. the only place i see he has an advantage is strength and size.

I didn't notice that Kid was there. Haven't watched much of this season's TUF, actually. Kid is freaking amazing, but he's been sidelined with injuries for so long. I hope he comes back stronger than ever.

And yeah, Rashad is a GREAT fighter. I wouldn't be surprised if the fight went either way, but with all this being said, I think Machida is too much for Sugar.

I honetly think the only way Evans wins this fight is by stoppage. But he is also smart and athletic enough to not fight Machidas game. But I also think Lyoto is smart enough to keep the distance and not try to get on the ground with a high quality wrestler.

I have not paid for a PPV in while but this match up really has my interest.

This is the great thing about MMA, the matchups. Put Machida up against anybody and you instantly have an intriguing fight. Maybe they could have exploited this fact by having him fight Shogun, Forrest, Wanderlei or Henderson first, but clearly he deserved the title shot with Rampage out. So far, of the fights I've seen, nobody can take Machida out of his game plan. Plus, like Rogan loves to point out, he's one of those fighters who is very difficult to train for, nobody else really fights like him.

For a while I've been wondering if the future of MMA was going to be like Rich Franklin, guys who had no core style, but train strictly MMA. More likely, the champs will be standout wrestlers, but Machida represents something I hope never dies in MMA, a guy whose fighting style is based on a traditional martial arts style, whereas Rashad represents something I sort of dread but at least he's really good at it, the future of MMA, a straight up MMA fighter.

Lyoto's background might be TMA, but his fighting style is hardly TMA. Lyoto uses the stick and run which is a boxing strategy. Lyoto looks like a classic, mma fighter to me.

Really? To me he looks like a semi-contact karate point fighter. His wide stance, only Silva, off the top of my head, comes close. It's almost like a horse back stance in karate. It's a stance that only a striker with tons of confidence in his ground game would use since it would probably slow down a sprawl or take down defense, but what it seems to offer, at least when I watch Machida, is a wider range of motion for evading blows aimed above his waist. With such a wide base, he can really lean far in several directions while maintaining balance. Silva is the only other guy who is at Machida's level at controlling distance and angles. That's the deceptive part of Machida's game, it's not just that he's hitting without getting hit, he has lightning quick reflexes but when he's dodging punches, he doesn't look that fast, but he moves very a-rhythmically and at angles that other fighters aren't sophisticated enough to even consider. He's moving kind of slow evading those punches, or so it seems, like he can read minds or something. He may have found the one element of traditional linear Japanese karate that is really useful in MMA: footwork. He moves around at very strange angles. Most MMA fighters, even other karate guys like GSP, tend to move in straight lines. Machida and Silva move in all sorts of directions and that takes its toll on people after a while, confusing and frustrating them.

But Rashad truly is one of MMA's very very best. So it should be interesting. When's the last time we've seen an elite wrestler improve his stand up so drastically and so quickly?

i agree its a karate base. im sure he has brought his ground game way up but he is a karate fighter. thats why i wanna see someone succesfully shoot on him. i wanna see his ground game and if its any good. we all know he can dodge and counter but can he work the ground.

Rickson

He looked pretty good on the ground so far. The ground is definitely not his weakness. I'd test his chin more than anything else right now. Yes, I know it's hard to reach his chin with his constant dodging, but I believe it should be tested at some point.

^ According to Wikipedia, he's been training in Sumo and BJJ since 12 and 15 respectively. Don't forget he submitted Sokoudjou on the ground.

edit: that was in response to Maverick.

And I wonder if people question a fighter's chin as much in Japan. I mean, the whole point is NOT to get hit. Serious question. I can almost seeing "the jury's out until he gets clubbed in the head and survives" even if the dude is 50-0 as being a macho American thing. I mean, I know being able to take a punch is a great asset in the fight game, but even better might be the ability to not allow your opponent drop bombs on your dome.

i agree with you on the chin testing. some guys like big nog can take a beating but if i had my choice id rather not get hit. no matter how tough your chin is if they hit you on the button your done.

i dont know much about sumo so i have no idea if thats why he was able to toss someone. but that is a weird style for a mma fighter to choose.
