Monfils must be kicking himself

Anybody else think that Monfils missed a golden opportunity at the USO? If he hadn't choked against Fed, I think given the way he played all tournament he would've been at least 50-50 against Cilic, and likely victor against an out of gas Nishikori in the final...

I thought Gulbis would be in the semis at least when I saw the cakewalk draw and based off how he played at the French.

But alas, he's still Gulbis.

I felt bad for Monfils after that Fed match, though.

Agree, Monfils had really golden opportunity to take a Slam and beat Goatic considering that currently he's better returner than Simon, Berdych, Fed and Nishikori. It will take lots of time again till neither of Djokovic/Nadal/Murray will not be on Gael's path to Slam.

Monfils totally chocked on the first match-point.

Gulbis is overrated, he ain't causing any trouble on fast courts with that forehand.

Let me get this straight. Right now, we have threads saying
a) Monfils would have won
b) Nadal would have won (had he played)
c) Djoko would have won had he gotten past Cilic - and soon to appear at a theatre near you:
d)? Federer would have won had he only been a bit younger/sharper/served better etc.

Did I miss any?
Cilic won and deserved the win completely - he was zoning for 3 matches in a row with hardly any lapses. Stunning level!

He's hardly overrated. His personality/quotes garners him more attention though than his trophies. Just like Monfils's entertaining style of play. It's can be more than winning matches that wins fans.

Anyway, Gulbis just had an easy draw, anyone in Ferrer's quarter had it lookin' "easy".

I'm not saying he would have won. Just saying he missed a great chance to at least get to the semis, and possibly could have won. Doubt he'll get such a good chance again..

Ok, I just felt that calling it a golden opportunity given the Cilic that turned up for the semi is a bit over the top.
Monfils would have gotten a bad beating, not a golden opportunity, as would pretty much everyone else imo.

Monfils will never win a major. He lacks maturity and mental self-discipline. Amazing physical talent but there's nobody home upstairs to guide that talent in big situations.

He plays like a precocious junior and not a professional and might be remembered as "that goofy guy who did a lot of trick shots" if he's remembered at all. He should join Cirque Du Soleil.

Cilic would have handed Monfils the same beating he administered to Federer. He was destined to win it and his tennis this year shows it's not a flash in the pan type performance.

"Missing a great chance" is pretty much the way to describe his career. Million dollar body and/or talent, 10 cent head. If he hadn't choked against Fed, he'd have choked next round. Actually, I doubt he'd even have gotten into a position to choke against Cilic, the way the latter was playing, but, we'll never know, will we? All we DO know, is that Monfils did what Monfils does-go on what the Aussie's used to call a "walkabout."

I also think he could have done ok against Cilic, he really was in red hot form until he inexplicably (although perhaps expectedly) lost his marbles in the Federer match starting in set 3. I'm not saying he necessarily would have won, but it certainly wouldn't have been a foregone conclusion like many people here are saying. Cilic played very well, but Nishikori and Federer definitely helped him look even better.

If, by choking, you mean he just got to the ball with the tip of his racquet and it went long then pretty much every lost point in tennis which comes by error is a choke.
Monfils footwork on that point froze up as he was approaching that ball. Definitely a choke.

No, it didn't. Do you even play tennis? He was sprinting back into the court and as Federer hit the volley and did a "will he go open court or behind me" check. When Federer went to the open court Monfils could only lunge that way. Had he tried to get into ideal position once Federer's ball was struck he would not have even got to the ball before it was past him.

Calling that a choke by choking standards is pretty amusing.

cilic would have beaten him... monfils would have had a larger payday by going out in the semis.. i want monfils to win a major.. it would be so very sad if he disappeared from history never cementing his particular idiosyncratic style of play

no one in the world would beat cilic in that day, not in that day

the way he played was unlelievable, we need to talk djoko2011 or top nadal to make the guy beatable

monfils definetely would be gone in 3 sets, nishikori was not playing that bad

You are perfectly right.
Anyone who even attempts to diminish Cilic's performance at that final (and, by the way, his two previous matches as well) has obviously not watched that final at all.
It was an awesome display of near perfect attacking tennis, the best I've seen after Del Potro at the USO of 2009.

Yep. He could of had 10 match points. .. would have choked on every one. But,Monfils is rich. Has plenty of women, or men. He enjoys life whether he wins or loses. At least that's what he says. So don't anyone feel sorry for Monfils.
