Monte Carlo importance to Federer getting back to No. 2?

Since Federer did not compete in Monte Carlo 2010 what are the possible scenarios for him if he participates and does well there?

It would be interesting to hear opinions considering Federer's clay court campaign last year was not impressive apart from 1 Masters 1000 final appearance, the rest was below-par by his standards plus a loss in the French Open to Soderling in the quarters.

Is it realistic that Federer will gain enough ground by using Monte Carlo as an "ace up his sleeve" in his bid to get back to No. 2?

Because of his 0-pointers, I think Fed will gain ground only if he earns more points in MC than in Basel, that is only if he makes it to the final in MC.

Aren't all the points he collects in Monte Carlo a pure net gain? So that by the end of the event if he performs well he should have made considerable headway in terms of ranking points?

No. MC, even though 1000 event, count as a one of 4 500 events. Fed has three 0 pointers 500s that will stay regardless of MC result.

Also don t' quite understand this thread. Fed does not deserve to be #2, there are 2 players that are clearly better than him now and rankings correctly reflect that. He is #3 now and you should accept that.

Of course. Federer has no right to seek the No. 2 ranking. The greatest player in the history of the game should be happy with his drop to No. 3.

By your logic Djokovic should have accepted his 'correctly reflected' ranking position at No. 3 at the start of the year after getting beaten more than once by Federer towards the end of 2010, and not attempted to accumulate more ranking points, lest the rankings reflect his apparent improvement and create the wrong idea...

Sounds like you need to realize that a tennis season comprises a ENTIRE SEASON and not just what has happened until now. You do realize it is still very early in the season, right?

Sure it is clear Djoker and Rafa are above Roger now, but unless you have some kind of crystal ball or time machine I would not be placing too many bets on the state of where everyone will be 8 months from now.

Fed's MC is only going to replace Basel if he does better than he did there due to all his 500 zero pointers. Djokovic however is the one with the real ace up his sleeve, Madrid, which he missed last year due to allergies

Exactly! it was only a few months ago that Federer beat 5 of the top 8 players and only dropped a set in the WTF. No one expected this slump from him after the WTF's, so who knows what will happen in a few months.

But your basing that on the last few months. For all we know, Nadal could destroy Djokovic on clay and ruin his confidence, allowing Fed to take advantage of him again, and id still say that Federer has the upperhand on faster hardcourts or grass against Novak. I agree Federer will struggle to beat Nadal in the future and will probably only succeed on very fast hard courts, but i say that because weve seen Nadal beat Federer regularly over the last few years. Djokovic may just being having a good streak, or he may not, we dont know

Djokovic beat Federer at the U.S Open on a very fast hard court when Novak was playing nowhere near as well as he is right now. Granted ******** showed up that day and gave Novak alot of help (and still had 2 match points) but that is the Federer that plays quite often than not these days anyway.

At first I :shock:'d, then i realized that they may be doing this to themselves, anyway. If Nole pushes Nadal too hard....
