Monte Carlo looks likely to play behind closed doors

To be honest I see your point. I thought they might cancel them but it appears they desperate to still get the events played and this is the only way to do it.

The thread title is misleading. Obviously MC isn’t announcing now the event may be cancelled. Miami is still claiming it will be played when it almost certainly will not. The MC announcement says, “if it will be played without spectators.” Larry Ellison addressed that the likelihood of any venue being played with no fans is “not happening” in tennis.

Maybe he is wrong, but he knows more about all this than any of us.

For those claiming that matches played with no crowd are not worth watching, that's really absurd.

I've been to challengers where I was the only one watching in the crowd and it was still great tennis. ATP matches also. I watched Wawrinka vs Rochus at IW and was the only one there except Rochus' coach...the tennis was still amazing. The next match after that Ollie took a set off Fed in the stadium court in front of tens of thousands. Was still the same guy who played in front of just me the night before.

I wish crowds were never allowed into tennis events, as all they do is delay the players when trying to serve.
The more silence, the better.
Same with golf :)

Why is Larry more qualified than any of us? He likely hasn't hit a single ball in tennis unlike many of us who have played several competitive matches.

And it's even more absurd to expect matches to be played with no one in the stands. I realize the Nadal and Djokovic fans are totally desperate for tennis to go forward (and probably furious Fed lucked out by timing his surgery to perfection), but the panic is real and events are going to be cancelled. I posted this in another thread:

As Larry Ellison explained, there is no revenue for the organizers or TV if no one's in the stands. The viewing experience with no fans is nil from an advertising perspective. And in any case, just having tournament staff, lines people, chair umps, press, announcers, TV crews and locker room people entail hundreds of people being present at the venue. It's not like Novak and Rafa are going to walk on court with only 5 people surrounding them within a 3 mile radius.

Larry Ellison owns the sixth most prestigious tournament in tennis. I would strongly assume he knows what he's talking about.

But it's hundreds of people who can be accounted for and screened, and who can keep a safe distance from one another. Greatly reduces the risk compared to a crowd of tens of thousands who can't really be effectively screened and are going to be packed very close together

I'm not recommending playing the tournament if the tournament loses money. Just saying it's still great to watch even if no one is in the stands. I'm not an insider so dont know if they can turn a profit with no fans there. I saw Davis Cup played with no one in the stands (terrorist threat I think) and it was quite interesting...players were battling it out still just like there were 10,000 people watching.

Honestly I'm shocked Miami is going to be played. I bet they change their stance before long though. NCAA just banned fans from games today.

After the news about the infected football player from Juventus and the quarantine for the entire team I think that the players themselves might have a word or two to say about playing. I know that if I was Federer, Nadal or Djokovic, I wouldn't care about tennis, when my life is at risk. Same would go for every other player, of course, but those are the players with most pull to influence the decision to cancel the tournament (obviously Fed is out anyway, so it is not up to him to lead the way in this case).

Will be so weird watching big tournaments without spectators, like watching challenge tour events...

I think the most amazing thing for me will be when we have NBA games with no crowds and how they will fill the vacuum of the enormously high noise floor.

Also interested to see how they will shoot it and whether there will be any attempt to replace the visual aspect of empty seats or change the coverage angles.

would be interesting to hear all the trash talk and profanity clearly without crowd noise.

guess they won’t be blasting music on timeouts? Or that music they play when fans chant defense? Warriors game tomorrow will have no fans, will definitely tune in.

It shouldn't be played. No spectator. Might as watch the players in practice.

Why? They're playing Champions League and March Madness behind closed doors. Those spectacles attract a lot more fans than any tennis tournaments!

It's done. Trump just gave a national address where he suspends all travel from Europe to the USA for 30 days. Europe will almost surely follow-- tennis is toast for awhile, sadly.

You're a Djokovic fan, so you have a horse in the field and can't see this logically. It's OK, it's a passionate issue. But if you think any tournament of consequence is being contested in the next few months, you're most likely going to be disappointed. There's a lot more things in life than Nole getting #18 or Rafa #20.
