Monte Carlo looks likely to play behind closed doors

You're a Djokovic fan, so you have a horse in the field and can't see this logically. It's OK, it's a passionate issue. But if you think any tournament of consequence is being contested in the next few months, you're most likely going to be disappointed. There's a lot more things in life than Nole getting #18 or Rafa #20.
Every other sport is managing to move on without spectators but tennis is cancelling events?

You are wrong and will get more wrong as we move forward.

Oh wow, that's unfortunate

NBA has a shorter season though and it can just postpone everything. Not a big deal for them. Tennis has a packed calendar. These events are not going to be played at a later date
True but with IW and Miami being cancelled and the tour moving to Europe there’s no way any tennis is being played for several months at least. I won’t be surprised if the ATP and WTA announce a suspension by the end of the week.

NBA Finals end in early June and the next year’s training camps open in October so their season is almost as long. Some top players were to go straight from postseason play to the Olympics in July; for them there wasn’t going to be more than a few weeks between games in the playoffs and the few warmup exhibitions they schedule.

I doubt a guy who's never hit a single ball in tennis would have this kind of passion for the sport

1980 ... we have cases of people buying sporting teams when they never played that sport. So we can't be too sure Larry played tennis but in general, I agree with you (y)

Tennis is a fairly easy sport to pick up and play even if you are a bit older.

Agreed (y) I remember when I started playing, I was able to serve/volley fairly quickly and I was surprised by that.

Why is Larry more qualified than any of us? He likely hasn't hit a single ball in tennis unlike many of us who have played several competitive matches.
Is this even a serious question? Larry Ellison owns the sixth largest venue in the entire sport. He talks to players and other tournament directors weekly (Nadal stays at Larry's compound at IW every time he plays). So you've hit a tennis ball in your life.:unsure:

Have you owned a Masters 1000 event which is widely regarded as the fifth slam? Are you literally so obtuse (or drunk, hopefully) that you can't figure out why Ellison's opinion on this matter is worth 1,000 times of any of us?

I don't consider Indian Wells anywhere near the 5th Slam, because the 5th Slam will most likely be played on a continent which has yet to host a slam......for example South America.
Also, Indian Wells isn't even best-of-5-sets.....and also, Indian Wells is an EASY tournament because they get regular rest-days between best-of-3-set matches! What a joke.
And the Indian Wells-Miami swing shouldn't be mandatory, because players are not getting enough rest at the end of the year......so why not give them the holiday after the Australian Open before the clay season begins?
The schedule is really hectic, with ATP Finals and Davis Cup, then ATP Cup and Australian Open.....very exhausting tournaments, and preseason training inbetween Davis Cup and ATP Cup.

Beatles ... agreed and I fully deserve this chastisement. I should not have worded my post about Larry so callously.

Don't fret, you're posting on a tennis discussion board full of armchair experts who think they know better than industry experts so your cavalier statements about Larry is not something new

A completely pointless decision designed to portray a virus as some sort of attack on America from outside troublemakers.

It's done. Trump just gave a national address where he suspends all travel from Europe to the USA for 30 days. Europe will almost surely follow-- tennis is toast for awhile, sadly.

Most sports, tennis included have TV contracts to fulfil which is most likely a motivating factor behind still holding the tournament despite there being no spectators allowed at the event.

I read the whole ATP and WTA tour is cancelled for the next 6 weeks. It includes Miami, Monaco and Barcelona.
Should be back for Madrid and Rome but at this rate, I doubt it will be back.

It started 3½ months ago in China and they are just starting to get it under control

It has just begun in the West, but we know more about it now than the Chinese did when it broke out

Hopefully things get back to normal soon

Italy did not handle this well at all. Their outbreak started at the same time as South Korea's, and SK is already recovering, with a death toll of only 71. If anything, SK should have been doing worse because they've got almost as many people (51.5 million vs 60 million), packed in a country less than half the size of Italy. But now they are announcing more recoveries than new infections.

The question for every other country in the world is... do you want to be the next South Korea, or do you want to be the next Italy?

SK had the MERS epidemic about 8 years ago, killing 38. They learned their lesson, and have been preparing for the next big one ever since. They're much more prepared than Japan (which wasn't hit by MERS) or just about any other nation.

So based on this thread and others, when, not if, the Zombie Apocalypse happens, tennis will be the first to go.

This makes me sad.

Monte Carlo is a safe haven for the rich and powerful, and being plague-ridden because of a tennis tournament doesn't fit the image.

CANCELLED

But Italians remain optimistic. Quarantined Italians are entertaining each other with balcony concerts and chanting that "there is no virus that can beat us":
