2001: Fed beats Sampras, loses tough match to Henman, Rafter vs Agassi 5-set spic, Ivanisevic legendary comeback to beat Henman and Rafter in 5, 9-7 in the final
2018: Anderson saves MP and comes from 2 sets down to beat Federer, Nadal beats Delpo in epic, Isner-Kandy marathon, topped off by the Djokodal legendary match, begins the GOAT comeback season

Mentioning Fed over Sampras is hindsight.
Nobody in 2001 was sure Federer was going to be the player he ended to be.

Not true at all. McEnroe mentioned during the telecast that he "would be surprised if he doesn't end up winning multiple, multiple majors."
My own impression immediately after watching the match was that his netgame was lightyears better than the only other 3 good players of his gen at the time (Safin, Hewitt, & Roddick). I told my tennis buddy the next day that this Roger Federer kid was a guarantee to be #1 in years. Now I wouldn't have predicted 20 majors, but dominant #1 was an easy prediction.

What I didn't appreciate or expect from watching the 2001 match, however, was how much his serve would improve over the following 5 years. I was in the Sampras-best-ever camp then, and it wasn't until around 2006 that his serve (especially his second serve) reached a much higher level that made me realize, ok, this guy is as now good as Sampras was.

Wimbledon 2018 had the one of the best matches of all time (KAndy vs Jisner) while one of the most vile players won Wimbledon 2001 :/

2001 and it's not close. Might be the GOAT slam in terms of drama.
I have to slightly disagree with the GOAT drama moment. As for the comparison with 2018, it had the better final of course, but not better than the Djokodal SF.

As much as I liked seeing Goran winning back then, it was mainly because of his charisma as a person. Also the situation with two extremely supportive fan groups was great is this match.

But still, tennis should be mainly about the match itself, and in that terms Goran is a servebot who cannot compete with any great Fedal, Djokodal or Sampras vs Agassi match.

I mean, I re-watched the match not long ago. There were some great points, but mainly it was about aces and double-faults.

Definitely 2001. The Rafter-Agassi match was not a patch on the one from the year before, but still very good. The first semi final in 2018 was awful, and the fact that all that epic semi finalling led to such a lame final is the total opposite of 2001 where the two epics built to something even more epic

If you're a Brit like me the 2001 Wimbledon doesn't exactly engender very nice memories. For that alone I'd pick 2018, plus my favourite player won it which was a pretty sweet bonus. ;)

Highly subjective question, which depends on personal preferences. It depends on whether you find more exciting the old-school serve and volley of Sampras-Federer or the modern baseline game of Nadal-Djokovic (even though Nadal approached the net 50 times against Djokovic).

We also had a phenomenal Nadal-Del Potro match in the WB 2018 QF.

For me personally, it's a tie.

McEnroe is like a broken clock, he can give the correct time twice a day.
Congratulations if you spotted Federer as early as in 2001. If you are sharp spotting big talent in progress, I suppose you were not betting high on any Lostgenners or Nextgenners.

To be fair, it's not impossible to see Fed becoming a great player back then, he did have a really solid game. Perhaps Hewitt was the safer bet back then since he peaked early and already became #1 that year, but Federer definitely looked to have a lot of potential.

Well, hadn't Goran been a major headcase he could've been a multiple Wimbledon champion. How many stupid matches did he lose at SW17? Too many.

Many people, and you can include me here, are kinda nostalgic when it comes to Ivanisevic and the fact that he 'kinda' came 'out of nowhere' to win. The fact still stays that he was a fantastic grass player. The only difference back in 2001 was that he was playing freely. No chocking this time. The stars had aligned, the sky had opened ... (y). It will probably stay as one of the most memorable runs in W history.
