What do you think would be the more impressive achievement?

If Federer somehow won the Australian Open, his fifth, which would mean at least 5 championships at 3 different Grand Slams. No other player in history has even managed to win 3 championships at 3 different Grand Slams.

Or if Nadal won the Australian Open, which would mean at least 2 championships at all 4 Grand Slams. This would be the first time in the open era, but has been done before By Roy Emerson and Rod Laver.

Federer's achievement would be insane and very much unexpected.. At his age in this era, to win a the AO.. This would be huge. But it would be huge because no one is expecting Federer to win a Grand Slam anymore. Nadal's achievement would rate a little higher in terms of history. Federer would "just" be winning his 18th Grand Slam.

Historically, winning 15 majors is better than 8 majors no matter how you bake it.

Once a player has won a major winning it again doesn't have the same type of kudos as when they won it the first time, it has different kudos.

folks I have a feeling that #14 is happening in Melbourne.

what nadal is doing is insane:

the man cant volley.

the man serves with the wrong arm

the man is terrified of the net

the man is almost always injured

the man cant hit a slice to save his live

the man has trouble returning well on quicker courts given the actually mechanics of his so very loopy, heavy topspin strokes which take more time to produce/execute.

translation: the man is just ridiculous. he leaves so much on the table and takes you to the cleaners anyway.

he leaves you out there on the side of the street naked with wounds, scars, and injuries that dont heal for 100,000 centuries.

A lot of it has to do with the aurora surrounding his name. I assume a lot of players on tour felt like they've already lost against Nadal before they even hit the courts. Even if Nadal is playing particularly average, he still has this intrinsically mental advantage over his opponents purely because he is, well, Rafael Nadal.

Then again, regardless of his mediocre net game and lack of variety, he's an awfully good player, and a freak of prodigious proportions. Tactically, it should be very easy to beat Nadal, but he has freakish endurance, a devastating forehand, and excellent court coverage. He may not be appealing to watch for many viewers, but he's a beast.
