Most bagels dished of all time

Interesting list. I don't think however that the # of bagels relates to the strength/depth of the field so much.

Atleast for Fed I remember a number of matches where he dished out a bagel were otherwise pretty competitive (think of his 2006 AO run, 5 setter against Haas and the final against Marcos), certainly more so than many of for example Sampras' 6-4 6-4 wins.

I think the list is more of a reflection of playing style and/or preferred surfaces. I expect players whose best surface is clay (Borg and Nadal) or whose ROS is widely recognized as their biggest strength like Novak, Agassi or Connors to rank above guys like Sampras who had supreme confidence in their serve and were just looking for that one break. Fed is a chameleon that is pretty balanced between defense and offense so he dished out a lot of bagels during his athletic peak (2004-2006) but later in his career moprhed into a much more serve focused player.

For what it's worth
Dimitrov leads Goffin 5-1 their ATP matches H2H, and I just noticed that there were two bagels in the only 6 matches they played.
Goffin dished the first bagel in 2014, casually in the first set they played against each other for ATP in 2014, in a match Dimitrov won in the end.
This year they played the 5 remaining matches of their rivalry.
Dimi returned the "bagel favor" to Goffin in the RR match between them in WTF 2017.

So total bagel sets that Nadal dished = 81 + 3 + 3 = 87

Let me know what I am missing?
So Nadal has been bageling grown men before he turned 17? Poor guys!

Bagel-related thoughts subthread:
It seems easier to dish bagels in clay courts.
I would not think it would be usual to break serve on fast courts, like Wimbledon, the necessary three times in a set to dish a bagel.
What about servebots being dished bagels? It seems almost impossible, as it is so hard to break their service games.
Would be interesting to see how many bagels Isner or Karlovic have been dished in their careers. Should be very few, if any.

That 121 ranked player really skews the average, there were only two players with rankings of 48+ in those 9 events. I'd also want to know the highest ranked player he played or was in the draw rather than just the finals opponent.
And then so does the #1. Remove both outliers and the average rank stays about steady.

I looked at one tournament there and through the players played. Most of the time he didn't play anyone else who had career-high rankings inside the top 20.

I'm guessing Davis Cup matches. I don't see any on your list, but, as one example, Nadal beat Seppi. 6-0, 6-4, 6-3 in Davis Cup in 2006.

@buscemi Yup you're right. My ATP data is scraped from pages like this:
As you can see, there are no Davis Cup events listed on those pages. However, checking Nadal's player activity for 2006, his Davis Cup matches are indeed listed:
Looks like my ATP database is incomplete because I'm missing all the Davis Cup match results.

The damn ATP website is a complete mess.

@Sudacafan Your intuition on clay courts is correct, as the following are the numbers for all matches since 1968 (Open-Era). (Note these matches do not include Davis Cup matches.)

Surface | Total matches | Matches w/ bagels | %
Clay | 59908 | 6524 | 10.89%

Carpet | 17640 | 1204 | 6.83%
Grass | 21081 | 1265 | 6.00%

I am working on pulling the numbers for bagels eaten, and will create a separate thread. In the meantime:

One commentary I have is that Goran Ivanisevic serves a ton of aces, but he gets bageled a lot. So perhaps that may have something to do with his second serve being quite weak?

Seems that my intuition was also right in the case of servebots performances.
Look at Isner and Karlovic, who heavily base their success in serve, and who have little to offer besides that weapon.
It’s really amazing the low numbers of bagels eaten in their whole careers, and also bagels dished (the fewest in the list). This is because they are poor returners as well.
On another note, I see a player as Vilas who has dished, but also eaten bagels a lot, as you show now. Just the opposite of servebots.
And the trend I see in bagel eaters, is that they are mostly baseliners.

Like I said, I don't believe that was the case from '76 on. I don't see his career filled with any more joke events than Borg or Mac, so I find it strange that you keep singling him out. he played so far beyond his prime, the fact that his win % remains so high is pretty impressive imo.

As many have stated, no one cared about the ranking system back then. It wasn't even published weekly. It was only for seeding and draw purposes, it wasn't meant to mean anymore than that. The idea that Connors was chasing ranking points like Thomas Muster is beyond comical. I can't believe there was one tennis fan, player or journalist that thought that in the 70s.
I'm sure he gave 2 ****s about the weeks and years he spent at #1. Fine, it bothers you that his name comes up in all these 'modern' ranking records the ATP, but I find it odd to use something he has nothing to do with to put him down.

So what % of his career is attributed to joke fields? He won 109 titles, do you want to subtract 10? 20? Even 89 legit titles sounds pretty good to me. Or 79. He won 1200 career matches, how many should we subtract? 200? 1000
Wins still sounds pretty good to me. And still gives him a pretty high %. How many bagels should we subtract? 50? That leaves him with 150. Not too shabby. I bet he has a pretty high % of bagels in his later career, say from 1982 on. Is that still Mickey Mouse era?

The historical revisionism that goes on here by people that didn't even follow the era they are discussing is very strange to me. I see you try to remedy that with all the posters who don't know much about tennis pre 2010, so
you can see where I'm coming from.
I'm not saying that Connors was doing this all on purpose to inflate his statistics, that's just how the tour was at the time, you had to play a lot of smaller events to make a good paycheck and Connors did it with more gusto than a guy like Borg I felt. I didn't follow the 70's but I feel I know enough about the era to say that. Just that when people bring up his 109 titles or 268 weeks at #1 you have to remember that those numbers are inflated, by how much I have no idea. But I am not going to put him above Agassi or Mac because of those numbers, that's my point. Of course it's not nearly as bad as when people claim Muster is a clay court great because he vultured 25 tournaments a month in 95 and 96.

Of course Connors' longevity was a big part for those marks, and it's reasonable for an ATG who played forever and in his share of smaller tournaments to get a lot of bagels. My comment was directed more towards Vilas/Orantes being so high up anyways.

OP, your chart is outdated for the current players. It should be:

Nadal -- 96
Federer -- 90
Djokovic -- 88
Ferrer -- 76
Murray -- 70

I didn't check the other active players.

As has been said of Sampras & Fed, their service game was great enough they only exerted themselves to gain a single break a set. You can easily tell with Federer for example how little he cares about breaking serve more than he needs to unless he's being pushed on his service.

To get a bagel one needs 3 breaks and frankly barring terrible service games a winning player isn't going to work much at 5-0. Dimitrov for example against Goffin got 6-0 because of double faults and weak 2nd serves.

I mean sure, if a server double faults and gives buttercup serves then sure a returner will go for it but that's not going to happen too often.

I'm sure Fed has more 6-1 or 6-2 sets than anyone in history.

*ATG breadstick list:

Connors -- 400+
Lendl -- 350+
McEnroe -- 300+
Federer -- 296
Nadal -- 283
Agassi -- 275
Djokovic -- 267
Borg -- 241
Edberg -- 222
Wilander -- 192
Becker -- 174
Sampras -- 167

*A couple of them may be off by 1 or 2, give or take.

Hahaha.

"More competitive" with No. 1 at 10K points, No. 2 at 9K and No. 3 and below at 5-3K. Lmao...

Let me try to recreate the way your reasoning process works:

- Day 1: it rained in this town
- Day 2: it rained in this town
- Day 3: it rained in this town
- Conclusion: It rains every day of the year in this town.

Or this way,
- Native Americans are disappearing
- That man is a Native American
- Conclusion: That man is disappearing

Could you give an example of that? Indian Wells didn't even exist throughout the majority of Connors' career. I don't think Connors played more than 20 events per year through the majority of his career.
It's beyond strange to hear Connors spoken of like Vilas, who often played 35 events a year.
I agree with your posts here.
Just one thing: Indian Wells is the successor to tournaments playing to
- Palm Springs (1976-1978),
- Rancho Mirage (1979-80)
- La Quinta (1981 -1986).

That has to be the worst analogy I've ever seen on this forum.

Can't backpedal either. You said a field devoid of anybody with the ability to rack up 5-6K points besides 2 players years past their best is "competitive".

To make things easier since 99% of people on this forum aren't aware the points system has changed 2-3 times the last 20 years - 5K points in today's system would net you around 2-2.5K points in the system from 2000-2009. That means a guy like Tommy Haas from '06 would be ranked 5 or 6 in today's system when he ended '06 at a distant 11th. And 2006 is considered an uncompetitive year.

There's also "less bagels" today because the lower-tiered competition is much closer in level with the top players (minus Fedal) than it has been in years.

In the 80s you had more variety in terms of style, level and competition. I'd argue that time period was stronger than today by quite a large margin.

I scoured all the match scores from the ATP data, and tabulated the players who dished the most bagels of all time. I'm only listing player who have dished at least 40 or more bagels in his career, as from 1877-2017 there have been 2,865 players who have dished out at least one bagel.

Players still active are denoted by (*).

It would be interesting to see the total "bagels and bread-sticks combined" dished out. Rafa has been good at dishing out bagels and bread-ticks to almost everyone at the FO.

You must be kidding. Please educate yourself about the 1980-1997 era before expressing such an opinion. The 2017 field was ridiculously weak compared to every year I referenced above.
He is talking about the field overall in general and not just the top players.

True, and Federer has played the most matches of the 3 by far.

However, what's a little surprising (and a testament to Fed's greatesness, I might add) is how many of those bagels are against elite opposition. Take a look at the standings if we're tracking bagels dished out to members of the top 10:

Federer: 26
Connors: 19
Borg: 17
Lendl: 16
Djokovic: 15
Nadal: 9
McEnroe: 8
Dibbs: 7
Becker: 6
Agassi: 6
Vilas: 6
Edberg: 5
Murray: 5
Wilander: 4
Nalbandian: 4
Courier: 4
Davydenko: 4
Sampras: 3
Solomon: 3
Bruguera: 3
Muster: 3
Ramirez: 2
Ferrer: 1
Kuerten: 1
Berdych: 1

And against the top 5

Lendl: 11
Connors: 11
Federer: 9
Borg: 7
Djokovic: 7
Becker: 5
Edberg: 4
Wilander: 4
Nadal: 4
McEnroe: 4
Murray: 3
Dibbs: 3
Ramirez: 2
Vilas: 2
Courier: 2
Agassi: 1
Bruguera: 1
Sampras: 1
Muster: 1
Davydenko: 1
Nalbandian: 1
Ferrer: 1
Kuerten: 1
Berdych: 1

(the list is incomplete due to my laziness + the computer rankings only going back about 43 years...old-timers are getting short-changed here).
That can't be right, when did Nadal play 9 top 10 guys?

So the list above only has players with 40 or more career bagels dished. Here is the list of players with 30-39 bagels dished.
(*) Denotes Sampras. (His return game is the weakest part of his game.)
