Most boring-to-watch player (Top 10s only)

Post some current or former top 10 players who have/had the most boring-to-watch tennis game.

optionally explain why.

I'll start:

John Isner ...

Who wants to bet this morphs into another Nadal hate thread... from there it will devolve into Nadal v. Federer with some Djokovic thrown in for good measure :)

Andy Roddick, Tomas Berdych and Nikolay Davykenko.

Nadal
Ferrer (much more than Arsepicker)
Isner
Roddick (only good thing about him was the tension he bought to a match)
Hewitt (no weapons, boring game)

Berdych is pretty boring...Isner is too. Ferrer is probably the most boring of the top 10 though, I don't love grinding for the sake of grinding. At least Rafa and Djoker have big time weapons.

I find Rafa boring on clay, only because the outcome is essentially decided in advance. On other surfaces though, where he's more aggressive, his game is entertaining enough.

well, hello, Nudall of course. take that stamina away from him and he wouldn't be ranked even in top 300s. the most boring player ever. moonball, moonball, run and then moonball some more ... pump your fist, touch your a.nus, smell your fingers, then moonball again ...

I would have once said Nadal, but that was because I had only seen him on TV, but I was lucky enough to be front row for his match with Tommy Haas at the AO this year and have completely changed my mind. Become a huge fan, actually. Moonballs? Idiots!

I find Berdych pretty boring, to be honest. A very one dimensional game.

Murray should be good to watch, but he gets into that defensive mindset and drives me mad, which is a shame because he really does have the shots...

DelPo is a bit boring too, it is fun at first, SMACK, SMACK, SMACK, but you soon tire of it and there isn't anything else to see in his game.

But this is a pretty silly thread, I defy anyone to watch any player in teh top 50 from courtside (NOT on TV!) and not be enthralled.

maybe that's just me.

whoever said Ferrer needs to see him play live, the energy is unreal, and I have seen him come to the net, hit FH winners, do lots of things besides 'grind'

actually, that is pretty much my answer, unless you have been down at court level watching these guys, you just have no idea.

I would not be surprised if this was the case, Timbo.

I need to find my way to Flushing Meadows in the upcoming years... Maybe even this year, if everything works out right this summer and I get my applications to grad schools sent out in time.

I remember watching a college tennis match live and I thought that was absolutely amazing. No doubt I would think Ferrer is entertaining if I got the chance to see him live.

Federer.

Jokes. Murray first, then Nadal. But I have to agree with Timbo here, live any top player just looks good and what looks like a pansyball is assuredly heavy as hell actually.

Absolutely correct.. nothing compares to live court level tennis.. I could watch them practice all day too..

GREAT points. TV does tennis probably the worst justice of any major professional sport. You really can't appreciate how hard the guys work or how beautiful the game can really be on TV.

I enjoy watching the practices more than the matches sometimes.

as far as good TV goes - early nadal was boring as hell but now he has so much spice on his shots that the rallies are more fun

Isner is boring too but he's american so I get into it

but really anytime you get two defensive baseliners playing their games it kind of drags on

Isner is boring, other are not.

I don't really like Nadal on clay except when his opponent really meet the challenge (generally Fed or Djokovic, but I remember a very good match with Davydenko). Against weaker player it the worst matche possible. Great defense from Nadal, who will hit a winner only from a very good position after a long rallies, and tons of UE from his opponent who go for too much.

Other player are interesting, including Ferrer. He is not very offensive but I like how he build points. And what makes his matche intersting comparing to Nadal's is that the outcome is unsure.

All TV covered tennis I check in on but can never watch a full match unless I want to be lulled into a Nap.

Live in person....none of the pro's are boring and when you can see the spin and power behind the shots its amazing.

I wish more TV coverage would be from a lower angle so you could see how much court they actually cover in a point.

All the big servers.

Sampras, Roddick, Ivanisevic, Stich

I can't believe whoever put Davydenko on the list. He's great. I'd pay money to watch him.

Ferrer. He maybe a fighter but his game is a snoozefest.

I wouldn't say Nadal/Djokovic are individually boring but their matches most certainly are. Nadal's clay dominance is also pretty boring.

Isner too though not always.

And yes, Simon. Extremely dull to watch. I'd say he's worse than Ferrer.

All grinders are boring, Nadal,Ferrer,etc...not the big servers, well, except Isner, too tall for tennis. I hate trees playing tennis.

I love defensive games and games that utilise spin. Del Potro, Berdych, Fishner are all incredibly boring and their games possess the depth of a straight line. Ferrer, Nadal, Djokovic I enjoy watching, but the matches take a tiring amount of time.

I'll start:

John Isner ...

John Isner is one of my favourite players.
And he's not just a serve, and it's exciting because you know he can beat or, at least, trouble any of the top 4 the majority of times.
You don't really get that feeling with most other players.
Although I support Murray, I find when he's off, he's the most frustrating player to watch, you could say boring or negative but it could just be a fine line between creative brilliance and mediocrity because he plays with such variety.
Brilliant, gifted and unbeatable when he's on but looks like an amateur when off.

Isner under all circumstances is my No. 1.
Rafa is No. 2 but it depends on the match-up.
I'm fascinated any time he plays Djokovic these days.

Every grand slam seems to have a epic isner 5 setter. Berdych is very entertaing to me he is really attacking. I dont find any boring. Edit thx paul.

Any big server is painfully boring to watch. It's the answer to insomia.

And Nadal is boring to watch when he's in full pusher mode. When he is being aggressive he is fun to watch, but that sort of tennis is rare from him these days.

All of them. Federer had a chance to be a non-boring player. When he was younger he played more of an all court game. However, he discovered he was so good that he could win by staying at the baseline and he became a boring baseliner like the rest of them.

tbh, I will only watch a match if there's at least one of the big 4 playing.
So, any non-big 4 player is now equally boring to me.

I can't see how Nadal is boring. Frustrating to play against, but not boring. 1980's moonball women's tennis, now that was boring.

It's easier to point out who isn't boring. Of the Top 10, I'll only go out of my way to catch a match if Djokovic, Federer, Tsonga, or Del Potro are in it.

I don't really think Isner has 'epic' 5 set matches.

If we hark back to his Mahut wimbledon experience, that was just him serving well and having pathetic groundstrokes. Holds serve easy, but zero groundstroke weapons to attack opponents.

I would put Davydenko or most any other Russian in there as boring to watch as well. I think they have the personality tortured out of them as a child.

I think there is a high probability that the guys who think Rafa/Novak/Ferrer/Murray play boring tennis must be armchair critics who have never seen them live from close quarters. The energy they bring to the game and the bite on their shots is unreal.
You may dislike their personalities on court their OCD behaviour etc but I think that for most guys watching them live will probably change your perspective on their tennis.

With that being said let this commence to the Rafa/Murray hate fest that this is invariably going to degenerate to.

Agree. I've watched Ferrer live. And there is just this energy and fight that makes him very fun to watch that you would not otherwise see on TV. Give the man more credit.
