Pete Sampras has the record for most consecutive Grand Slam final matches won with 8. Federer and Nadal are tied for second with 7.

Does anyone know who has the record for most consecutive Grand Slam semifinal matches won? It looks like it is Borg with 10, followed by Federer with 10.

While it looks like a good stat tennis historically rewards completed achievements within a given period. Since he lost earlier at majors in-between those finals the numbers are conveniently stacked to make them look better than they are.

Sampras made it to than three Grand Slam finals in a row only once > Federer made it to 10 on one occasion and 8 on another (from memory, might be slightly different).

During Sampras' most prosperous 12 month periods at majors, Wimbledon 93 to FO 94 he won 4 of four majors.

Federer has done that well on three occasions (better in fact as he was RU at the major he didn't win): Wimb 05 > FO 06 and Wimb 06 > FO 07, and USO 08 > Wimb 09.

Also, at no point in a one year span did Sampras ever accumulate major titles at a faster rate than Federer.

Simply: he was a true great when he got to finals, but he didn't get to them often enough to be Federer's true peer.

This is one of Sampras' records which Federer could easily beat if he sucked on clay like Pete. (see what I did there)

By showing up in a FO final against Nadal Federer lost his chance to go one better. Now imagine if Federer didn't do so, he wins the previous 7 major finals, the 06 Wimbly and US Opens and then 3 majors in 2007 = a total of 12 consecutive major finals won (which would smack the Sampras record by 50%). Who knows, if Federer doesn't show up in the 2008 FO final, maybe his confidence against Nadal wouldn't be so low and allowed him to win 2008 Wimbly (and the US) to go even further.

Turns out that if Federer was worse than what he actually was, he would be better.
