Most epic match of every year this century

Hello, everyone.
I hope all is well.
So, what are your thoughts on the best/most epic match of the year for every year this century?
I can only properly talk about ‘06 onwards, so;
2006. Nadal v Federer - Rome finals
2007. Federer v Nadal - WB finals
2008. Nadal v Federer - WB finals
2009. Nadal v Federer - AO finals
2010. Nadal v Murray - WTF semis
2011. Federer v Djokovic - RG semis
2012. Djokovic v Nadal - AO finals
2013. Nadal v Djokovic - RG semis
2014. Wawrinka v Djokovic - AO quarters
2015. Wawrinka v Djokovic - RG finals
2016. Wawrinka v Djokovic - USO finals
2017. Federer v Nadal - AO finals
2018. Djokovic v Nadal - WB semis
2019. Djokovic v Federer - WB finals
2020. Djokovic v Thiem - AO finals
2021. Djokovic v Nadal - RG semis
2022. Nadal v Medvedev - AO finals
2023. Alcaraz v Djokovic - WB finals

US Open confirmed worst slam!

;)
USO honestly had many second places in my mind. 09 with Delpo and Fed, 10 with Nadal and Djoko or Fed and Djoko, 11 Djoko and Nadal, 12 Djoko and Murray, 13 Nadal Djokovic, 18 Nadal Thiem, 19 Nadal Med. All great matches.
13 is more of a third place after Stan Djoko at AO

1) Nadal v Djokovic RG 2013 SF. Even though Novak lost I just thought it was an epic match. Plenty of drama, epic tennis and went 9-7 in 5th. Probably novaks best performance at RG against Prime Nadal who was still close to his peak.

2) Djokovic v Federer Us open SF 2011. Epic match with everything and match points saved. Top performance from both guys with great attacking tennis on display. In my eyes the highlight level from both players in a match I seen arguably at us open. The level was just so high throughout.

3) Federer vs Nadal Wimbledon final 08. Incredible match with absolutely everything. Peak nadal on grass against prime/peak Federer. It had everything and 2 rain delays to add to drama. Both guys were the stand out players for m world at time and it lived up to billing.

I’m not sure the epic match for each year but they the top 3 I’d choose of all the matches I seen.

For me the quality of the match matters more than media hype. AO 2009 semifinal was probably more epic than the final. But that's a pretty close one, as both matches were of very high quality. But in some other examples there is a bigger difference.

Meh. It's all subjective anyway. I just don't see any epicness about your choices for 2010, 2014, 2016, 2019 and especially 2022.

There are some obviously better matches in other years as well.

How is RG 2011 Semi-Final better than 5-set thriller semi-final a few months later at the USO?! You can't be serious! LOL I agree with the rest of these though more or less, but that 2011 one...eww...even Djokodal USO final after that epic Djokerer semi was better match than anything played at RG that year, including Federer's own matches against Djokovic and Nadal back-to-back!...

I tried to factor in different perspectives, such as match quality, epicness, importance, backstory, hype.

According to your own criterias USO 2011 Djokerer Semi-Final is much much better match!...It was better match quality and went all the way to 5 sets, where Djokovic had to comeback being 15-40 two match points down so there you had epicness! It was also important because Federer was only 1 point away from setting first and only meeting at the USO with Nadal, not to mention the revenge story for losing to Djokovic in similar fashion year prior and it had backstory, because of added pressure on Djokovic for losing to Federer at the semis of RG a couple of months back...

2010 I didn’t reckon many options, so felt like including a Bo3. 2014 could’ve chosen the WB final, but it’s splitting hairs. 2016 not much as well. 2019 and especially 2022 not being epics is just bs.

There is nothing to be split about! LOL USO semis of 2011 was significantly better match, it was epic, dramatic and had all the backstory you need from a tennis match between two of the biggest open era rivals!...

A thriller which included back to back 6-3 6-2 sets, and a total collapse at the end of the fifth set? And mentioning the final as more epic than anything in RG really proves that your comment is just BS.

whole 40-15 trilogy was epic thrillers

so USO10 and USO11 >>>> WTF10 and RG11

Bitter about what exactly? Your OP clearly asks for the best/most epic stuff. 2019 was clearly an average match, 2022 i wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

Maybe you should have included more BO3.

I mean... Most years have many matches you could justifiably pick. I picked Australia enough times.

Come on now...this was the match that Safin has no bussiness winning i stopped watching close to the 2nd half of 4th set, went about my bussiness out of town for about an hour, came back and match was still going on and Safin was close to losing again when i came back just to see him edge out a little in the end...this gotta be the story of that year! I mean like Federer was close to his very prime at the time and it was Rebound Ace too, not Plexi!...

Nobody is arguing the epicness of it. After the very dull direction of 2004 it was an amazing way to start the year. Most years have more than one epic match. You can tell stories like that about many. When Nadal was down a break in the 5th in Rome, and then when he gave up the massive lead in the final set breaker I thought it was going to be Miami all over again. Then it wasn't. A star was born.

It was still only a Masters tournament no matter how you spin it...the stakes are always higher in Grand Slams (especially later stages of it!) and thus AO semis -> Rome final easily! because one is grand slam and another one isn't...Nadal's star would be born regardless of that Rome final match...it was more of a "final nail to Coria's coffin" situation as clay expert rather than "the star is born" one...

Good list. I have pretty sharp mental images of most of these, but simply don't have instant recall of many. My one quibble was that I don't recall the USO16 final being a great match, and Stan and Novak had at least four better ones (not that year, of course), two of which you listed. I'm not sure what to replace it with, though, so will defer to others.

Well, I don't think a lot of these are MOTY, just the ones I saw that I considered to be most EPIC. He's had his fair share of epic battles (holds the record for most times coming back from 0-2 of course) but... Well, there's just always someone more epic.

He probably had the top two this year.

He had surely the most epic match of 2012, and then it was surpassed 48 hours later.

He had that amazing career-elevating night in the dark against Gasquet at Wimbledon 2008, and by the end of the week nights in the dark at Wimbledon 2008 were defined by another match.

etc.
