Most famous love-40 holds?

Wawrinka held in the 8th game of the 4th set yesterday after being down love-40. He then won the next 2 games and the title. What are some other memorable holds in this scenario? Its one of many stats that I think the ATP should track, seems like its often a turning point.

Some other times it happened in GS finals:

2014 AO Final, Wawrinka serves out the first set 6-3, goes on to win the match.

2013 USO Final, Nadal holds for 5-4 in the 3rd set(1 set all), goes on to break in next game, wins the set and the match in 4.

2008 Wimbledon, Fed holds for 4-3 in the 3rd(down 2 sets to love) eventually loses in 5 to Nadal

1999 Wimbledon Final, Sampras holds for 4-3 in the first set, breaks in next game, and goes on to win in straights vs Agassi

1989 RG Final, Chang holds for 4-3 in the 4th(down 2 sets to 1), defeats Edberg in 5 for the title

1987 W Final, Lendl holds for 4-1 in the 3rd set, but ends up losing set & match to Cash 7-5.

1986 W Final, Becker holds for 5-5(not just 3 break points, but set points as well) breaks Lendl in the next game and serves out the title.

1984 RG final, Lendl holds for 3-2 in the third, broke Mac in next game, won set and match.

1980 W Final, Mac holds twice down love 40 in the 5th, at 0-1 & 3-4, eventually loses match.
Borg also does it, at 4-2 in 3rd set.

1986 RG Final, Evert holds to even the match at one set all(6-3) goes on to win title

1985 RG Final, Evert holds for 6-5 in the 3rd, breaks Martina in next game to take the title

1980 USO Final, Mandlikova holds for 5-4 in the 1st set. wins set 7-5, but loses match to Evert

some other matches in the majors:

2007 USO 4R, Fed vs Lopez. 1st game of 3rd set. goes on to win 35 straight points on serve.

2001 W 4R, Sampras does it twice vs Fed. Holds for 2-2 in 1st set(which he loses), Holds for 4-3 in 2nd set(which he wins 7-5)

1996 W 1R, Kafelnikov holds for 4-4 in the 4th set, breaks in next game an wins set, but loses in 5 to Henman

1995 W QF, Sampras down a set to Matsuoka holds for 4-3 in the 2nd set. breaks in next game & goes on to win in 4.

1992 USO QF, Lendl holds for 5-5 in the 4th vs Edberg(saving match points as well as break points) breaks in next game, but loses match in 5th set tiebreak.

1992 USO QF, Courier holds for 4-4 in the 4th, breaks Agassi in next game and serves out match.

1991 RG 1R, Sampras holds for a 6-4 in the 5th win vs Muster

1991 W QF, Wheaton holds for 3-4 in the 4th(down 2 sets to 1) vs Agassi. Wins match in 5.

1991 W SF, Becker holds for 5-4 in the 3rd vs Wheaton(wins in straights)

1989 AO 4R, Svensson holds for 3-2 in the 2nd vs Becker, wins match in straights

1988 W SF, Becker holds for 4-4 in the 3rd vs Lendl, loses set in tiebreak, but wins in 4

1988 W SF, Edberg holds for 4-3 in the 3rd vs Mecir(down 2 sets to love), goes on to win in 5

1987 AO SF, Cash holds for 6-5 in 1st vs Lendl. wins set & match

1987 W 2R, Cane holds for 5-4 in the 3rd, goes on to win set but lose match in 5 to Lendl

1986 RG QF, Pernfors holds for 3-2 in the 2nd set(lost 1st set to Becker), doesn't face another break point the rest of the match, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-0

2013 W 4R, Lisicki holds for 4-4 in the 3rd, breaks Serena in the next game and serves out the match

2012 W 3R, Serena holds for 2-2 in the 3rd, goes on to win 9-7 vs Zheng

1997 USO QF, Spirlea holds for 1-1 in the 3rd vs Seles. Wins match.

I know Pete did it at least once against Fed in their lone match, but it's been a while since I've revisited it so I can't quite pinpoint exactly when. (BTW the commentary by Mac was pretty funny. After Pete fired IIRC 3 straight aces Mac chuckled, "3 down, 2 more to go.") Pete went on to win the game but not of course the match.

Yep, that was at 1-2 in the first set, won by Federer in a tb.

2014 AO Final, Wawrinka serves out the first set 6-3, goes on to win the match.
This was followed by a break too, part of a 12-point run.

1980 W Final, Mac holds twice down love 40 in the 5th, eventually loses match
He did it at 0-1 and 3-4 in the fifth but never broke Borg.

There was a virtual replay the next year when Borg beat Connors in five. Connors fell back love-40 in three consecutive service games in the final set, starting at 1-all. He got out of the first two jams and got as far as 30-40 in the last one.

Borg never held from love-40 in that match, but he did in the 80W final. It was at 4-2 in the third set; he had to save 5 break points in all in that game, and held after 7 deuces. He did not break McEnroe in the next game; Mac was still cruising on serve at this stage of the match.

I think that long 4-2 game is often overlooked. If McEnroe had broken, he would have been back on serve; and breaks were so rare at that point, there's a good chance the set would have gone to a tiebreak. McEnroe tended to have the edge over Borg in tiebreaks, so the match could have gone quite differently.

1986 RG Final, Evert holds to even the match at one set all(6-3) goes on to win title
This also was not followed by a service break. After getting out of love-40 to end the set, Chris fell back love-40 in her next service game and was broken, falling back love-2 to start the third.

1977 USO final (Connors at 3-2 in opening set, broke in next game; Vilas at 1-all in second set)

1978 Wimbledon final (Borg at 2-1 in the second)

1979 USO final (Austin to open second set)

1984 Wimbledon final (Navratilova at 2-1 in the second)

It also happened at 3-3 in the 2nd set(the game NonP was referring to, with Mac's comment)

I will add it to the OP. Also happened in another major final - Lendl held for 4-1 in the 3rd set vs Cash in '87.

So Sampras twice in that match without ultimately winning, just like Connors in the '81 semi (Mac in the '80 final too, though Borg as the winner had his own love-40 hold).

In general, though, it seems the players who had these love-40 holds went on to win the match.

Often the love-40 hold is followed by a break -- or a big service streak like Federer's against Lopez.

A few of the love-40 holds seem to have had little or no effect, like the ones by McEnroe and Connors against Borg at Wimbledon. Those holds were just Mac and Connors struggling to stay even with Borg.

I posted that Connors had a love-40 hold in the last game against PMac, but he had another in the third set, down love-3:
https://news.google.com/newspapers?...AIBAJ&sjid=ylUDAAAAIBAJ&pg=5082,4830475&hl=en

I knew there was some famous comeback by Connors or someone else, down two sets, a break, and love-40. Not sure if it happened that way in the Pernfors match.

Here's a textbook, even stereotypical, love-40 hold.

1996 YEC round-robin, Becker d. Sampras 7-6 (10), 7-6 (4)

At 4-5 in the opening set Becker falls back love-40 by missing all of his first serves and double-faulting twice. Triple set point.

He then wins the next 5 points, making his first serve on every one. 3 of these are aces, 2 of them on set points.

Becker also got out of triple set point back in '87 Davis Cup against McEnroe. He won the match 4-6, 15-13, 8-10, 6-2, 6-2, and held from love-40 at 10-11 in the second, avoiding a two-set deficit. Big first serves on all three set points.

Legend
1996 Fed Cup, Kimiko Date at 3-5 in first set (triple set point, broke in next game and won set in tb), Graf at 7-all in third (did not follow with break; Date won match 12-10 in third)

2005 USO final, Agassi at 2-5 in first set (triple set point), lost set and match

I don't know if he did it more than twice, didn't rewatch the match, just read articles that mentioned game 7 of the 2nd set and rewatched that particular game. Maybe he didn't win the match, but he may have lost in straights if he didn't win that game in set 2. Seems like most of the examples so far have the player who holds from love 40 ending up winning the set, which I think is statistically significant.

Surprised we haven't found any examples with Wilander yet.

Adding some more to the OP.

Pancho got out of triple match point twice in the fifth set, at 4-5 and 5-6, eventually winning 22-24, 1-6, 16-14, 6-3, 11-9.

So Gonzalez, and the Vines match from '35, are the only two examples so far of players surviving triple match point and going on to win the match.

I think that's a much better way of putting it -- winning the set, rather than the match. Of course winning the set helps to win the match, but that would be an indirect link at best.

No love-40 holds by Wilander on my stat sheets.

Becker -- he may not have been so consistent in making his first serves on break points, overall, as we found in the First Serves Pressure thread. But 5 examples so far of love-40 holds, and three of those examples were triple set points.

Seems that being break point down wasn't enough trouble for him; but if he faced 3 straight break points; or he was about to lose a set; or Davis Cup was on the line....

Didn't he serve 5 straight aces once from love-40?

In the 1992 US Open final, Sampras held from love 40 down in the 2nd set for 3:3 but loses set. Edberg holds from love 40 down early in 3rd set and wins set on tiebreak and the title in the 4th. In fact, Sampras served for the 3rd set and got broken so very attritional match.

can't believe I forgot this:

Murray held for 1-1 in the 4th vs Djokovic, '15 RG. ended up winning set.

Pancho got out of triple match point twice in the fifth set, at 4-5 and 5-6,

Sanchez held from triple match point down vs Mac at '92 AO(4-5) and broke in the next game, but ended up losing the match.

Didn't he serve 5 straight aces once from love-40?

That was in the Hopman Cup vs Medvedev.

No love-40 holds by Wilander on my stat sheets.

I haven't really been consistently taking note of when that happened in my match stats, most of my examples were just from internet searches(thought you may have come across some for him that way)

I haven't either, but I've been able to go back and check. I have all my points lined up in a row like this: 1221,

with 1 and 2 representing whether the point began with 1st or 2nd serve. I circle the number if it's a break point, so I've just been checking for 3 circles in a row.

I have one more list of these, for now, will post a little later. Becker is on there again (89 YEC vs Mac).

Nice to see a number of posters participating.

New list, mostly my own but with a couple of results given to me by someone else offsite. A lot of lost sets/matches in this list:

I actually often mention this as the turning point (followed by top-notch return games by Lendl) whenever people trot out the myth that Mac choked away the match, so shame on moi for blanking out.

Ditto. (BTW I agree with Moose that the RR match was even better than the classic 5-set final in terms of pure tennis.)

Very interesting (and often surprising) submissions so far. I confess I've never really kept track of this stat and will pay closer attention from now on.

Only one I can think of off the top of my head is the 2008 US Open final

2-2 in the 2nd set, Federer had been broken on his previous service game.

Federer failed to hit a 1st serve and ended up at 0-40

Holds serve despite one of his shots being hit long, Murray fails to stop the point to challenge it.

Rosewall at 5-6 in second set (triple set point), defeated Sedgman 6-3, 10-8 in a 1958 pro tour match in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia (on artificial grass turf).

Rosewall was particularly impressive in his match with the powerful stroking Sedgman. After winning the first set, Rosewall, behind 5-6 and 0-40 in the second set, was faced with three set points. Calling on every shot he has, Rosewall pulled the game out to even the set at six all.

He broke Sedgman’s service in the 13th game. Then, with victory riding on his serve, he suffered a service break in the next game. Breaking Sedgman’s service again in the 17th game, Rosewall, after losing several set points, smashed Sedgman’s short lob for the final point.

Fed just held at 3-4 in the 2nd set of the YEC final, with 5 straight 1st serves against Novak.

P.S. But still lost the match, with a DF on the last point. :p Djoko was clearly the better player today, Fed could barely make any headway on Nole's service games. Congrats to Nole on a most excellent year.

Speaking of which what you guys/gals make of Novak's 2015 now? Think this has very strong claims to being the 2nd best year of the Open era, even over Mac's '84 or Fed's '06. I'd still put Mac's season a notch above due to his double duty in doubles and IMO better records against top opposition, but it's close.
