I prefer a more flared buttcap and always build it up to my preferences using athletic tape. I guess it's something I picked up from when I was playing hockey. Unlike tennis racquets, sticks come retail with more length than most players want, and are then cut to the player's preference, so there is no end cap. The knob is built up with athletic tape to whatever size the player prefers.
I've found that using a hairdryer or heat gun, I can get the grip off and keep most of the adhesive tape on the grip, so that I can reinstall the old grip securely. I've even stopped bothering to staple the grip when I put it back on. The rough surface of the athletic tape gives the underside of the grip a lot to grab onto, and I've never had a problem with them moving.
It's obviously a cheap fix and is easy to un-do or re-do if you don't care for the initial results.
