OK folks, this is your personal list. One match from each of the big events, that is all four slams, all nine masters, YEC, Olympics and Davis Cup, that is the stand out. Stand out doesn't necessarily mean the highest level, but just overall for level of play, drama, historical impact.

See if you can do one for each of them.

Here is my list.

Federer

Australian Open - Nadal 2017 Final
Roland Garros - Djokovic 2011 Semi Final

Hard to disagree with those picks.

Probably Djok's Wimbledon 2018 win v Nadal was better than his 2019 performance. The historical impact is probably bigger than v Fed the year after too... had Djok not won that match, they'd be on 23 each right now...

btw 2013 Cinci Nadal d Fed in the qf

You missed Djoko's 2011 Madrid F?

IMO for Djoko more or less the same, but I'd rather go with Wimbledon - Nadal 2018 Semi, Shanghai - either Murray 2012/Delpo 2013 and Paris either Federer 2018/Medvedev 2021/Rune 2023 not much between them. Maybe even for YEC 2023 SF +F combo as an exclamation mark.

Nadal Djokovic 2013 RG was semi final, not final.
For Federer I'd pick RG2009 Soderling definitely above Hewitt 2004
As well as the Haas R4 and DelPotro semi both at RG 2009

I think the 2014 Wimbledon final was the most iconic Djokovic match at Wimbledon and arguably one the most defining and important moments of his career in general. Absolutely massive match.

I think for me with Rafa 2012 RG final takes the cake in terms of his most epic moment there. Just the history and emotion of it and the iconic image of the embrace with Toni in the crowds.

Would be good to do this for some other big names who played most of their career after the union of the masters series events. Hewitt, Safin, Stan, MurrayGOAT etc etc. I know they won’t have the same qty of title runs, but highlighting their biggest matches at each event.

Roger 2017 AUS OPEN FINAL. Helped him to collect 2 more slams.
Rafa 2008 won against fedrer in WIMBELDON. Roger never defeated nadal in FO so some points there for nadal to beat best player in his home.
Novak. I go with recency bias. Olympic gold. Man completed set of all major titles. 37 year old ...last real chance .....knee surgery....legend stuff

Good list.
My brain isn't fully engaged yet, but for Novak, I also think the 2018 Wimbledon semi (de facto final) wins for almost everything: level of play, drama and historical impact.

I'm vacillating on RG for Novak, but actually favor the 2016 finals. Not for level of play, but for getting that huge gorilla off his back and the historical impact of the NCYGS. (No, not as significant, for me, as a true Grand Slam would be, but still very big.)

I'll have to think about the full list later, but well done.

I agree with basically all of Hitman’s list. There are some close ones

- YEC 2006 vs Blake for Federer, I think people think of this when they think of “peak Fed”

- AO 09 F or AO 22 F for Nadal mayyybe; 2008 RG F for Nadal as well

- IW 15 F for Djoker (something about the kits and the fact some people rate it incredibly highly on here)

Good list.

Looking forward to seeing these lists. I haven’t read many posts where you’ve spoken about Fed so I’m interested where you will land on his biggest matches.

Agree over there. 2018 W win was equally dramatic. It has its own 15-40 as well. Had Nadal won any of them, the match and W 18 was his. Should be there in the list.
And impact wise, it catapulted Djokovic back to top. Else he wont have the confidence to win the next 2 slams and back to top

Thanks, but please don't commit me to it -- busy day ahead once I fully awaken.

Believe me, I have great admiration for Fed, but just don't "catalogue" matches as well as some other posters do. Hitman did a good job with this list.

Federer US Open - Agassi 2005 final win was a bigger match both in drama, impact and competition.
Indian Wells - Nadal win at 4R doesn't seem so impactful like an SF/Final.
For me 2012 IW Semifinal is a better impact match as that was a rebound after AO win

I'm going to do one for a few others, think Murray has to be next.

Nadal RG 22 QF vs Djokovic
In a way 2013 RG win was more important, just think Rafa looses that semi, do you think he will going to win Us open series.
Rafa in his career whenever looses RG was done for the year in remaining slam and competition, even 2009 one which was young Rafa

Federer US Open - Agassi 2005 final win was a bigger match both in drama, impact and competition.
Competition, yeah. But the 04 final is such a standout moment in time. What he did in those first and third sets was a profound destruction, the kind rarely seen in a slam final, especially against such a competitor. As a transcendent moment for one of the all-time great sportsmen, I think it pips the Agassi final, even though the latter was a much better match.

Good list for Murray.

For AO, I like your choices, but I would probably go with Nadal 2010 Quarter Final. And Djokovic for YEC in 2016 considering the weight of that match.

Davis Cup, it has to be Goffin 2015 Final.

Federer - this is before my time so can't comment.

For Djokovic , just 5 out of 15 of the best moments came in last 10 years.
For Nadal, not a single out of 15 of the best moments came in last 10 years.

If Djokovic is retired, this thread belongs in former pro section, they are that old.

Roddick is 4 years older than Nadal and he retired more than 12 years ago.

Good list overall.

As its been mentioned already, I'd go with Wimbledon 2018 for Djokovic instead of 2019, it wouldn't surprise me if he had never been back in the slam race had he lost that match. Nadal would have been 18 > 12 being only one year older. Not to mention the psychological momentum being completely the other way around.

For Federer I might go with the Benneteau match in 2012 for Wimbledon, he was on the brink of the defeat and came back to win the title beating Djokovic and Murray back to back with no 5-setters.

Sorry, but I think definition of "iconic" is being stretched to its absolute limit on some of these. I probably wouldn't be adding many Masters victories to the iconic list. If it's truly iconic, it should be a pretty small list. This should just be "best win" at each tournament.

I've also never understood how the 2011 RG SF could possibly be considered iconic. At that point, Djoker had yet to even make a RG Final, and Fed lost the final. You should probably have to at least win the tournament for it to qualify as an iconic win.

Partly agreed but there must be exceptions but yes not every tournament you can have epic especially when you end up never winning it.

Right. So Nadal beating Djokovic at Madrid 2009. A match that was lauded as something truly special should not count because he lost the final? OK, in your opinion I guess.

This is best example of exception. I think the member is wrong that this is binding requirement but is right that most times than not it is.

Nadal has zero shanghai or paris wins that are iconic.

To me it is a criteria or it isn't. For me a match win can be iconic without you winning the title. I am not making exceptions one way or the other otherwise it gets messy.

Absolutely not. Not in my book.

In fact, I wouldn't add any Masters victories to an "Iconic' list. This should just be "Best Wins" or "Most Memorable" wins at each tournament.

A truly "Iconic" list from the Big 3 might be 7-8 matches. Maybe.

That's where you are wrong.
You want to make absolute claims while knowing fully well what you are advocating is wrong.

I would side with @Antonio Puente more than you on this. If you want absolute criteria then yes the non winning events can not be part of this as I have seen you choosing a small R2 match as iconic and it can never be. No historical significance, no best level, nothing to say that is iconic.

It does not matter to me if someone agrees with this criteria. That was MY list. If you have one and you want to share go ahead. If not there are other threads to indulge in.
