G.O.A.T.
ATP announced nominations for 2014.

Cilic, Nishikori, Agut, and Kyrgios. Who you thinking?

When you look at the last few winners, it's kind puzzling that Cilic and Kei have been nominated. Cilic at least won a slam, but he'd been in the second week of a slam a few times and has been ranked in the top 10. By comparison, JMDP won the 2009 USO and the award went to Isner that year. Kei had a great year but it's just a natural progression of his recent successes.

Side note, did Novak really win the award in 2006 and 2007? That's interesting.

Bautista Agut for me.

Cilic won a Slam but he would have been high up in the rankings had he played the whole of last year anyway. Nishikori, again, is really maturing as a player but his improvement was expected and has been more gradual ranking-wise.
Kyrgios might win the award next year or in 2016, but he's got to bring more to the table. Maybe if he beats Nadal or another Top 4 player consistently or starts winning titles, then we can agree on him.

Didn't Agut already win it in 2013? Or was it Busta? Agree with the poster above, Goffin should have won it.

Busta last year. Goffin is a great nom. If he is a comeback player, how is Cilic not? Cilic was as high as #7 a few years ago and made slam semis. Much more of a rebound season compared to Goffin's successes.

Do you ever stop repeating that? You don't know that, you are just selectively quoting random news articles as always.

And according to you in every thread, doping is a Swiss thing because of Lance Armstrong.

Have you ever read your own posts?

Has to be Agut. Cilic had a magic two weeks at the USO, I don't think that necessarily means he's that much improved. We all knew someone from the top twenty would break the barrier eventually. Kei has been getting decent results for some time now, he hasn't really made that much of a step up compared to Kyrgios of Agut.

Agut on the other hand has made leaps and bounds into the top twenty from what, 95? Consistent performances the whole year through. Kyrgios was playing like a top-thirty player for a brief period between Wimbledon and the moment he just dropped off the tour but does that merit a prize over someone who's had a great, consistent season pretty much from the get-go?

Nope, he only got to be ranked 9 for a few short weeks, most of his career has been spent as a top 30-20 player..

Woops you are right but for someone who spent 2 straight years and the majority of 4 years in the top 20, plus made the R16 or better at eight slams prior to this year..I just don't think "Most Improved" applies. He certainly took a big step, but for an already established player to win this award, in my eyes, he'd have to reach Top 3 or make another major final or something.

Cilic. He went from a ranking of close to 50 to winning a slam and reaching the WTF in the span of a year. No other player on that list won a slam. It is not even close imo.

He had a great year no doubt, but doesn't a Comeback nom seem more fitting, especially with the suspension he served?

By comparison, John Isner won the 2009 Most Improved award after going from 144 to 34 in the rankings. Isner didn't win a title and his fourth round showing at the US Open represents his only 3 wins at majors since 2007. Juan Martin del Potro, on the other hand, improved his major record from 7-4 in 2008 to 17-3 in 2009, winning the US Open over Federer.

Not sure if JMDP was even nominated for the award, but he didn't win it, and I don't think Cilic should either.

I forgot these awards are voted on the players. Makes the results a bit interesting.
