Most minor big 4 matches

Many of the big 4’s matches have been significant both for their careers and tennis history. Some haven’t. In search of the most minor/insignificant big 4 match, I submit this:

Murray Djokovic 08 Monte Carlo (djokovic bt Murray 60 64).

Any others that just didn’t matter?

Djokovic Murray Miami 2007 SF - 6:0 6:1 for Novak

Playing tennis was one of the last things on Murray's mind that day. UE after UE.

Probably any of the following:

- A "dead-rubber" Davis Cup match or "dead-rubber" Round Robin match at the WTF (which wouldn't have affected the SF qualification results - or would have had minimal impact either way)
- Any match at Masters 100, ATP 500 or ATP 250 level that wasn't a SF or Final

Fed-Djok Davis Cup 06 - No one expected Federer to lose to any Serbian at the time, so the 3 set romp was expected.

Fedal 2013 IW or 2015 Basel. Those literally didn't matter. In 2013 Federer wasn't playing great, likewise with Nadal in 2015. I don't think that was much of a mental burden on the other.

Djokodal 2015 Beijing? Not really in doubt, especially with Djokovic playing brilliantly and Nadal playing... not-so-great. I really doubt Nadal beat himself up over this one.

I wouldn't discount 2015 Basel or 2013 IW for that matter. If you discount 2013 IW, you have to take away all the other ones in 2013 as well, which doesn't make sense.

First one was significant bc that’s the day srdjan became a Fed hater. Probably also contributed to the “frosty” relationship between fed and djoker and gave djoker a chip on his shoulder.

IW 2013 reestablished nadals total dominance of Fed after 2011 wtf - 2012 Indian wells. Fed broke that at Basel 2015. The second set lost at Basel 2015 by Fed was a mental block affair (also nadal was resurgent that fall, even beating 2015 no. 2 Murray 6-4 6-1 at the WTF for some reason), which Fed was able to overcome in the third set, possibly setting up his 2017 revenge tour against nadal.

Agree with the Beijing match. Total formality.

Not exactly. It was a quarterfinal, so low stakes, but I guess fine. 2013 Rome was probably worse - on clay so Nadal winning was already highly likely, plus Fed didn't play Miami or MC (still made the final though). Tough to argue for many other Fedal matches being less impactful though.

That's true enough, I was just trying to find the least of each pairing. I doubt Srdjan's personal opinion of Fed did too much for the rivalry, so I'm still going with that as the least impactful Djokerer match. Fedovic was pretty influential once it heated up.

As for Fedal, that's fair. I suppose you could make the case for 2011 Madrid, since either one would lose to Djokovic but it's possible that if Djokovic had beaten Federer instead he might have made the RG final. Plus Nadal was a thorn in Federer's side from day 1, so the early matches were really influential.

Sorry, forgot it was a QF. Basel was a final, and it seemed to turn the rivalry around, but it is difficult to say because of the 1.5 year gap before the played again.

I remember the pace of that match looked pretty slow and Murray really turned it into a pusher’s affair. Didn’t look like he was trying to win.

Even more random was their Indian wells 2007 match (Murray lost 6-2 6-3).

Federer beat Murray 6-0, 6-1 only to get back issues towards the end against Wawrinka and withdrawing from the final at WTF.
Not that it matters, anyway. Mickey Mouse tournament. Everybody knows this.

Tokyo 2011 muryGOAT utterly destroyed the Ned, but it's an insignificant tournament all things considered.

Any match that Federer lost, of course. Only Baghdatis, Philippossis, Roddick and Paradorn Srichaphan witnessed peak or prime Federer.

Not at all guaranteed that djoker beats fed at Madrid 2011 of both made finals..
Matchups work differently
