Is RG 2013 SF the most overrated match?

No, I am not. If you tell me you see more to tennis than the level of play, and yet you find the 2008 final overrated, I struggle to rationalize your insistence that you're qualified to comment.

And I find it astounding that you can't understand that some people can find it overrated to label that match as 'the greatest match ever played'.

On topic:

I don't think the match is overrated. Depends what parameters you are using. In terms of sheer quality throughout -- then yes. In terms of excitement and drama? It was epic. Would it finally be Djokovic' time to dethrone Rafa at RG? He had beaten him a couple of months before playing godlike tennis in the MC final. Nadal had a lot of momentum going in having won Madrid and Rome, but he was playing poorly the first rounds and it wasn't up until he played Wawrinka in quarters he started looking in GS-winning form.

Then the match itself happened. It's a sunny and warm day. You can see Nadal's topspin aids him from the getgo and he takes the first set. Second set is close with both having chances but Djokovic ekes it out. Third set is a total blowout. Djokovic seems to be struggling physically and some claim he threw up (spat out a bit of water, poor guy) Then the fourth set happens. Nadal is in control, gets the break and serves for the match. Becomes nervous and overhits a couple of forehands. Djokovic breaks and forces a tiebreak. Djokovic takes it and all momentum is on his side. Then he starts off by breaking Nadal immediately in the fifth. From then on Nadal just said "**** it. If I'm going down, I'm going down on my terms" and that's when he started beasting winners from everywhere on the court. Then the infamous netcident by Djokovic at 4-3. Nadal does the Harry Potter fingerpoint at him. They battle on. Nadal breaks. Djokovic complain about wanting the courts to be watered. He's on his last legs. Just a matter of time before he wants out. Then he implodes at 7-8 in the fifth and Nadal takes it and fingerwags the **** out of him. Mirror match of AO12 with roles reversed this time. Epic stuff and one for the books.

Not an overrated match at all. If it was a final it might have gone down as one of the best finals eva.

Safin is most overrated player all time

Really? To me that is a match I will never forget. That match is what got me into tennis for good though, so I am biased.

Yeah I only watched the first two sets, which I found pretty ordinary and I cracked the sh*ts cos I saw Nadal getting into Fed's head so figured it's going to be a straight sets win, and it was like 2:30am over here. From what I gathered it did pick up in the latter stages of the match.

For me it's 2012 AO F: the definition of anti-tennis grinding. Kudos to both players for their stamina and endurability but it was just too long and boring.

This was the alarming moment when they should have realised it's high time to speed-up surfaces again.

On here Safin v Federer 05 AO SF. People use this match to explain how amazing Safin was. Yes he was good, but it was just one match!

It is not rated as highly on here but the Djokovic Nadal 2012 AO final I find extremely overrated. I was impressed by the metal strength and commitment of both players but it was a pretty ugly match to watch. It seemed to me that was the peak of grinding tennis.

The RG 13 SF isn't overrated IMO, I agree it wasn't the highest quality for 4 sets, but I think it's more known for the drama in the 5th set anyway, similar to Wimbledon 09 final---a good match for sure, with a great/captivating 5th set...but not the best quality overall. I wouldn't call either overrated.

If I had to vote for it, I'd say US Open 2013 F is overrated. Great play from Nadal, don't get me wrong, but a pretty lousy and somewhat confusing match almost. I think it's been conflated somewhat as great play from Nadal/capping off his wondrous HC season into a great match in and of itself, which it was not imo.

I have to be really honest, the 2017 AO final was a bit overrated. I was there and the only thing which made it great for me was the atmosphere, brought on by the fans, which was through the roof, but that's because the fans were more Fedal fans and less tennis fans. I remember a similar atmosphere between Becker and some Italian guy whose name I can't remember on a Wednesday or Thursday night in the 90s. Tht match had atmosphere and great tennis, went 5 sets from memory. The AO 17 final though, was, a bit meh. It may have come across as a great spectacle, but that's only because it featured 2 players who were like for like, ie two elder statesmen. if you were to put two 17 year olds in the match, you'd get the same sort of tension because it was like for like. Same goes for two 60 year olds, like for like.

Come on now, 2013 USO was sweet af. We love it in the same way Fed fans would love AO17.

I highly doubt that. Nadal's season was already a big success... Federer was coming back from a significant injury layoff right into his first Slam back and he hadn't won one in 4-5 years.

But regardless we never expect a HC slam out of him, least of all over Imhotep.

Because at the time Federer was lbeing hailed as virtually unbeatable anywhere except at the French. So to see a talented player who didn't always give 100% give 110%, to the point where he was using the breaks in between points to get his breath back, and give Federer as good as he was getting, was great to see. That was probably the first match I saw between 04-07 where Federer was made to look human and not some indestructible machine. The tennis from both players wasn't bad either.

The AO final of 2012 is the winner here imo. The largely exaggerated use of time by both players probably made the match 30 % longer than it would normally have been. Not saying it wasn't an epic, but it sure is overrated imo.

Good answer. You have made me think twice about it.

2008 Wimbledon final is the most overrated match. Roger didn't show up to play until the 3rd set, and the 5th set was decided not by the tennis, but by who had the better eyesight in the darkness.

2012 AO Final.

In the end it was just painfully boring. 6 hours that could've been 3 and a half had the players involved in it didn't wasted time bouncing balls and picking their own butt.
