Most Overrated Player ON THIS FORUM

We all have our opinions, some good, most downright awful (I make inflammatory statements all the time). Each of us tend to pull a little more and give a smidge more credit to the players we enjoy watching than we rightly should.

Many people consider Grigor Dimitrov to be the second coming of Federer, but at the age of 24, his greatest achievements are a SF Finish at Wimbledon, 3 250 tourneys, and 500 tourney under his belt. He still has plenty of time to be a great player, but I think he has been given a little too much credit by commentators, critics, and my fellow forumsters.

Who is the most overrated player on this forum?

on this forum?

on this forum, every single player - past or present - who has won or will ever win anything has at one time been or will someday be "the most overrated player".

Safin.Too much credit for this guy.Anyway I think he certainly prevent Federer of a fourth 3 slam season.

Roddick is disastrously underrated, his game may have been limited to an extent but in saying that he used his two weapons to their best potential.

He did the best with what he had, but he's not Top 5 when it comes to Americans in tennis of all time.

Pete, Andre, Mac, Connors, Courier..then Andy.

Many people on here talk about him like he was a clone of Laver or something. That doesn't correspond with the player I saw for the best part of a decade.

Yes, but whenever discussion of the 'weak era' begins Roddick becomes one of the first targets.

Point is, Roddick was made for Fast Courts and when they were taken away he was still capable of transitioning and was able to finish in the Top Ten for 8/9 straight years, in that time he was #1, won a slam and made 4 other finals.

He maximised what he had and achieved the best results bar Hewitt and Fed and Hewitt is arguable

I think Hewitt achieved a lot more than Roddick, but I also believe he was more talented.

Roddick did maximize his potential though. He was like current Ferrer from 2006-2010.

Federer.

It's SO easy to win 17 slams in a weak era. Federer would be lucky to even make a Masters 1000 final if he played in the 90s.

Federer easily. Then Nadal followed by Djokovic.
I don't care how good they are/were, they would need to have won something like 40,30 and 20 slams to justify all the crap that is said daily about them here.

On a second level: Safin, Nalbandian and recently, Wawrinka. They would need to be all time greats to justify all the nonsense said about them, and some things not even in this case are excusable.

Especial mention to two players that never won anything meaningful: Dimitrov and Gulbis.

I don't get a sense many players get overrated here outside of the usual Nadal elevation but it's by no means insane.

If we're talking relative losers that are made to be top contenders I guess Wawrinka but I like him and it's all in good fun me thinks.

For past players, it has to be Kuerten.

Personally, I think Nishikori has also been a bit over-hyped. Even former tennis greats like Courier jumped on the bandwagon this year when he made him second favourite for the French Open because of his supposed prowess on clay. I like Nishikori as a player but....I ask you? What exactly has he achieved to justify the hype other than make the final of last year's US Open (where he got straight-setted rather easily)?

Stopped reading there.

Grigor was the second coming of Federer after his Wimbledon Junior's title. He was the second coming of Federer after his 2009 Rotterdam showing. Grigor has been his own man for a while now and only lazy detractors use Federer's name to sling mud in Grigor's direction. My advice to you is, when you start a thread like this, at least invest some effort in its credibility.

I don't think Dimitrov has been rated very lowly by this forum for months now.

Currently, I think the board as a whole is down on pretty much every player, and no one is overrated by the people on it.
(Seriously...it seems that no one can win this wimbledon, if you went by the polls on this board, with Murray losing to Novak, Fed to Murray, Novak to Anderson, Wawrinka to Novak/Fed/Murray in different threads).

Maybe Nadal fans are overrating Nadal slightly (Nadal will win FO + Wimbledon, followed by Wimby + USO, followed by NA Hard court swing), but I think that's just a delusional fringe, and besides, they've been really quiet lately.

Believe me, you're not alone. I'd need to sift through dead threads to find all the glowing tributes to his Nalbandian's) brilliance, but they're there. I'm sure he could hit a nice tennis ball (people on here wax lyrical about his backhand), but to me his fragility under pressure destroyed his career.

Like Rafter I think he pulled out near as many matches as he blew no?

Not of the ones I saw but it's going back into the mists of time. He barely showed up in his Wimbledon final. Choked horribly in his AO semi final against Bagdatis, losing after leading two sets to love and a break...and I don't know that he ever made any other slam finals? To me he was an underachiever on the big stage....even taking into account the End Of Season championship he won.

I don't get this at all. How is Nalbandian overrated? Overrating means being heralded when you really haven't accomplished much.

Nalbandian beat Federer 3 times in his prime on hardcourt and/or carpet. We're talking about beating prime Federer in the finals of the WTF and Paris Masters. Nalbandian has 11 titles. Coming straight out of the juniors, he was whipping Federer's ass all over the place. I don't remotely see how anyone could say Nalbandian is overrated.

Imagine the difficulty of taking down Federer in 2005 and 2007 on his preferred surfaces. He's the only guy who could do it.

Did Nalbandian have the greatest career? Of course he didn't. He was a definite head case and had fitness and diet problems. But it doesn't take away his brilliance with a racquet.

Many people on here talk about him like he was a clone of Laver or something. That doesn't correspond with the player I saw for the best part of a decade.

You are the first one I see comparing Roddick to Laver. Roddick was top 10 from 2002 to 2010 and most people here still rate him as some "lucky" Mardy Fish type of player. I agree that sometimes certain people go to far with the "what he could have been without Federer" but in the end Roddick had the potential to be Australian Open champion + multiple one at Wimbledon and Us Open and yet he didnt. Certanly he cemented his name in the history books and he is far more underrated here that the opposite.

What crap you chatting man?

Roddick is shat on around here. All anyone says is that his level of play was better than a one slammer.

He's a USO champion, former YE #1 and gave Roger fits in 2 Wimbledon finals. Some of us just respect his level of play.

When you talk about some player, its all about the QF,SF,F and titles. You are like one dimensional machine. The level of tennis that Nishikori can produce is close to the likes of Nadal, Djokovic and Federer pretty much the same tier as you favorite player - Murray. The thing with Nishikori is that he is not fit enough to reach his potential. For example after 2008(when he won a title as qualifier being a teenager-check how often that happens) he lost three seasons because of an injury and grinding at the Challengers for getting his ranking back. So just at the end of 2011 and the beggining of 2012 Kei reached the positions that he lost in 2009, that is a lot of time. Imagine if Murray skipped 2008 - losing all the momentum and ranking, do you think that he would have the same impact over the game as he did for real?

This sport is mostly based on confidence. You gain it with wins but as it happens, Kei often losess his momentum because of injuries.

Most of what's been said about Safin is true so he's not overrated, he has beaten the best players ever, on the biggest stages and sometimes made it look easy. He's the only player who wouldn't be listed in the top 10 players of the past 20 years, but would be the only guy to have a combined winning slam h2h record over them.

Out of current active players? Nishikori.

Former? Roddick, Nalbandian and Safin for starters. Especially the last two. Apparently they are GOATs in terms of level of play, but couldn't achieve anything near that statement.

This doesn't make any sense.

Dimitrov?? Just lol.

About 90% of this forum consider him a complete mug who has already maxed out his game by reaching a semi-final.

Probably Ferrer imo. The nonsense talked about him is hilarious. He would have won slams in any other era etc, he would have been #1 is most hilarious. The guy doesn't have any weapons.

In any other era he would had a few good clay grinds and flopped on the other surfaces. He could possibly have stumbled over the line to a French Open if everything came together.

You will have to provide some evidence of this.

Roddick wasn't the most talented but he had a very effective game, especially on faster surfaces. Which we had in his prime.

Dimitrov, Nishikori, Tomic, Kyrgios.

Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Stan & King Del Potro will all need to play until 40 in order to save tennis from the era we have coming...

Great example of the general mindset here. Talk about anyone other than the traditional established elite and they are overrated overhyped no-Slam-winning trash. Thank you for underlining it.

The first time I read this I thought you said that Peter Andre was one of the top 5 American tennis players of all time! :)

Agree
but reaper got a point by saying Nalbandian

I understand Nalbandian to a point of people loving his talent, but Nalbandian gets a bad rep (perhaps well deserved) around here and other places for being a "doughnut" boy. I wouldn't be calling him overrated. Safin is worse, IMO. The whole "Peak Safin beats everybody" rhetoric and all.

Safin comes to mind.
Don't dislike him, though.

Also Gasquet (don't dislike him either).
Will he finally live up to the hype this week though?
Maybe.

I'm looking forward to Dimitrov finally becoming the champion he was always meant to be.
He made a good move just now, getting rid of Rasheed.

But that's my whole point, he doesn't need to be a champion to be appreciated. I don't know if that isn't too abstract a thought for this place, though.
